Chapter 1 | “Don’t Let Your Guard Down”
♣♣♣
January. The new semester.
A season when the biting winter wind still blows.
Even though I was raised with sayings like “Kids are children of the wind, full of energy,” now that I’ve got some common sense, I understand how absurd it is to play energetically outside in the middle of winter.
On such a morning.
The moment I stepped out of the house, an extremely energetic voice rang out.
“Yuu-senpai! Let’s go to school!”
“…Sure.”
It was Shiroyama Mei-san, in her school uniform.
For some reason, my middle school disciple was there to pick me up.
As the first event of the new year, this was a pretty heavy blow, and I was already feeling like giving up.
“You didn’t have to help at the convenience store this morning, right?”
“That aside, I came to pick you up!”
That “aside” makes no sense to me.
If I had Himari’s social skills, I could probably nod along like the girls hanging out at Starbucks, saying, “Totally get it~,” but sadly, I’m not one of those Starbucks girls, so I didn’t get it. Sorry for being such a lame mentor…
Or maybe it’s actually a thing in society? I live in Japan, but I can’t claim to have mastered grammar perfectly. They say Japanese is one of the world’s most complex languages, and I, having lived only a dozen or so years, can’t possibly cover it all. The path of learning is like a dense jungle of life.
Well, whatever. No, it’s not okay, but let’s just say it is. Trying to understand a genius’s thought process is impossible to begin with. At least she’s not in cosplay, so that’s a plus.
More than that, I was curious about the high school freshman sulking next to Shiroyama-san.
Our convenience store’s newcomer, Mera Kamako-san.
She’s my junior, and we had a history after she once destroyed my accessories, but thanks to the winter break job, we’ve somewhat reconciled. It’s definitely not something I’d wrap in such kind words, but let’s just go with that.
“Why’s Mera-san here too?”
“Mei came to my house.”
“Got it.”
Her obedient puppy vibe completely outshines her gal persona.
As expected of Shiroyama-san’s vitality. She’s super cautious around strangers, but once she warms up, it’s like, “Personal space? What’s that, is it tasty?” Honestly, it’s kind of wild. I genuinely hope she doesn’t fall for some weird guy in the future.
Anyway, let’s head to school with these two. We’ll be late otherwise. I’m relieved they’re both biking to school.
I grabbed my bike from the back of the house. While Shiroyama-san cheerfully put on her helmet, I whispered to Mera-san so she couldn’t hear.
“Mera-san. Tomorrow, you have to say no.”
“Huh? What’s that supposed to mean?”
With a smile full of compassion, I replied gently.
“You don’t want to walk to school with me every day until I graduate, right?”
Mera-san shivered with a “Zzz…!”
Heh heh heh, that’s right. The kid you declared as your friend is that kind of person. Honestly, she’s too much for me to handle, so please do your best. I’d really rather not have to parade to school every day with younger girls in tow.
(Well, it’s kinda nice, though…)
After all, today’s the first day of the new semester.
Which means—it’s the day I’ll face Himari again.
Honestly, I’d been dreading it since I woke up. My stomach’s even hurting a bit. I might’ve skipped school if I’d messed up. Thanks to Shiroyama-san and the others showing up, I had no choice but to go.
I glanced at Mera-san beside me.
…Come to think of it, she’s walked this path too, hasn’t she?
“Mera-san, you’re pretty amazing.”
“Huh? What’s that about?”
“Oh, nothing…”
Having learned during winter break not to dredge up other people’s love lives, I got nothing but a puzzled head-tilt from Mera-san.
♣♣♣
We arrived at school.
For some reason, the school feels cleaner than usual after the new year. Thinking about that, I pushed my bike through the school gate.
Mera-san and I let out a big sigh in unison.
“Phew. Finally here…”
“Yeah…”
I thought we’d split up the moment Shiroyama-san left, but that girl followed us all the way to the school gate…
Thanks to that, the trip was tough with Mera-san in a foul mood the whole time.
“Why do I have to walk through the gate with Senpai on the first day of the year?”
“I totally agree, but that’s your own fault for not turning down Shiroyama-san’s invitation.”
“You’re her mentor, aren’t you? Do something to stop her!”
“With those pure eyes staring at me, there’s no way I could…”
Mera-san went “Grr…!”
“I get it, but… ugh. What if this keeps up until graduation…?”
“Why don’t you just go with Shiroyama-san alone?”
“Huh? Senpai, are you an idiot?”
And with an attitude like it was obvious, Mera-san declared.
“You think I can say no to those big, round eyes staring at me?”
“…Yeah.”
I agreed so completely that I had nothing more to say.
As we both sighed heavily in gloom…
A gang of gals charged in from behind!
“Yo!”
“Kako, mornin’!”
“Starting the new year walking to school with a guy? Livin’ the high life, huh?”
I turned around, startled, to see three girls chatting with Mera-san. They seemed pretty chummy, probably first-years.
Wait, they look familiar. Who were they again?
As I was about to recall, one of the gals widened her eyes and pointed at me.
“Ah! The accessory guy from the cultural festival!”
“Accessory guy…”
Like a justice hero fighting with accessories?
The leader’s probably Tenma-kun. The lone girl would be Sanae-san, maybe. I’m a flower user, so I’d be Green or something. Normally, that color suits mature types, so it’s a total miscast for me…
(Right. These are the girls who caused trouble at the cultural festival.)
At our accessory sale during the cultural festival.
Apparently, they snuck off with a few pieces. Their crime was ultimately exposed thanks to Mera-san’s mom’s efforts. Well, that’s what led to Mera-san working at our convenience store.
Technically, they were the ones who took the accessories, but it seems they did it at Mera-san’s request. Given that, I wasn’t sure how to interact with them.
The three gals were teasing Mera-san, playing with her cheeks and hair, looking like they were having a blast.
“What’s that? Kako, you’re really working at this senpai’s place?”
“And walking to school together? Is it that kind of thing?”
“Yesterday’s enemy is today’s love, huh? You were whining about your mom forcing you to work there, but maybe you’re not that upset about it?”
Mera-san’s cheeks were being squished and kneaded.
Then, she snapped.
“Shut up! You guys, be quiet!”
“Eek! Kako, your voice is loud.”
“Don’t be shy~ You’ve already made up, right~?”
…What is this chaotic, squealing atmosphere? So awkward.
Right, I should just go ahead. Why am I waiting for them to finish talking? Realizing this universal truth, I tried to quietly push my bike forward.
But I couldn’t escape!
The three gals circled around me!
I braced myself, thinking I might get shaken down, but it seemed different. The three gals clapped their hands together and bowed.
“Senpai, sorry about back then~”
“But, like, we couldn’t just stay quiet when our friend was made to cry, you know?”
“We were gonna apologize right away, but Kako stopped us~”
Oh, so that’s it…
Looks like they meant to apologize. I feel embarrassed for getting so defensive.
“No, it’s fine. I understood Mera-san’s feelings back then, and you compensated for the accessories, so it’s all good. I was wrong for letting it slide vaguely too.”
…They’re probably good kids at heart.
At least, they care about their friend more purely than I do. While they laughed and teased Mera-san again, they were having fun.
“Senpai’s actually a cool guy~”
“So maybe Kako was just overreacting?”
“Kako, this is embarrassing~ Have you apologized properly~?”
…I’m being played with.
Mera-san’s face turned bright red, and for some reason, she glared at me resentfully.
“Why’re you acting more mature with them than with me…?”
“That’s because of your usual behavior…”
Times like this, I really wish Shiroyama-san were here. Seriously.
Somehow, I ended up heading to the shoe lockers with them. They bombarded me with questions about accessories and flowers. Gals’ curiosity is intense…
We parted ways at the stairs.
“Our classroom’s on the first floor, so~”
“Senpai, bye-bye~”
Mera-san gave me an “Eee!” but I pretended not to see.
(Alright…)
The stairs felt unusually heavy, even though they were the same as always. The closer I got to the classroom, the more it felt like walking through the deep sea.
I was dreading going to class.
Shiroyama-san and Mera-san had distracted me until now, but alone in this situation, I couldn’t avoid it.
The first classroom since breaking up with Himari.
What kind of tragic fate awaited me…?
Well, it’s my own fault, but still, I value my life.
First, the premises: “Himari is adored by our classmates,” “This breakup was my unilateral decision,” and “Himari can be pretty ruthless toward enemies.”
From this, I envisioned three scenarios.
One.
The moment I arrive in class, I get mobbed. Thanks to Himari’s secret technique, “Crying Manipulation,” my classmates, now her minions, would physically punish me. Is she some kind of otherworldly necromancer? In that case, I’d have to prepare for a broken bone or two. This is the most likely.
Two.
I’d take psychological damage all day from classmates’ conversations. “What? Natsume-kun, you broke up with Himari-san?” “No way, you’ve totally used up your love luck.” “Guess he’ll die alone and lonely…” Leave me alone! Why are imaginary classmates worrying about my future…?
Three.
Somehow, I’m banned from school.
In that case, labeled a high school dropout, I’d be killed by Mom and Saku-neesan. They care a ton about appearances. Running a family business in the countryside is tough.
One of these three… No, actually, there was a fourth option.
In that case, the previous three could overlap, or I’d enter a bonus round where all are chosen. The field effect would unconditionally end my school life. What a greedy god☆
…While distracting myself with stupid thoughts, I arrived at the classroom. My heart pounded as I stepped inside.
Instantly, the guys in my class swarmed me.
Crap, it’s option one! I’m gonna get beaten…!
I hurriedly guarded my head. Thanks to Enomoto-san’s iron claw, my defensive reflexes for this kind of thing have gotten faster.
…But the mobbing never came.
Instead, for some reason, everyone greeted me with smiles.
“Yo, I heard you broke up with Himari-san?”
“Man, not being satisfied with a cute girlfriend like that? Are you a hero or what?”
“Guy’s always got beauties around him, huh? No wonder he’s teamed up with Makishima.”
I’m being welcomed like crazy???
What’s going on? How do they all know? One of them answered my confusion.
“It was a hot topic in the class group chat.”
Seriously?
Who leaked it? No need to think—it’s probably that brown-haired, flirty guy. If Enomoto-san knew, it’s not surprising he did too… Wait. Our class has a group chat? First I’ve heard of it.
(I wasn’t invited…)
As I took a mental hit for a different reason, one of the guys patted my shoulder.
With a friendly “Heh…” grin, he rubbed under his nose and handed me something. Pretty old-school gesture.
What’s this? An envelope? The kind gift cards come in. Opening it, I found a 500-yen book voucher.
“This is from last year’s Lonely Christmas Alliance, so.”
“…Thanks.”
Getting it after the fact? The Lonely Christmas Alliance’s benefits are too generous. I’m kinda tempted to join for real.
(At least it wasn’t a mobbing…)
It’s oddly welcoming. Have I ever been this welcomed by classmates in my high school life? This really fuels the suspicion that my value was just “Himari’s accessory”…
(I haven’t talked much with the guys in class. Maybe this is a chance…)
As I considered a fresh start, I overheard the Lonely Christmas Alliance members whispering behind me.
“Yo, Natsume-kun’s out of the game.”
“Sweet. Now I can hit on Himari-san.”
“I’m going first.”
“Huh? I’m first, dude.”
“You wanna start a war?”
“Bring it on.”
The Lonely Christmas Alliance’s friendship is too fragile…
This book voucher wasn’t a token of friendship—it was a warning and severance pay, like, “Don’t ever go near Himari-san again.” Is this one of those urban legends that’s scarier once you understand it?
As expected of a femme fatale. If she’d been born in a different era, she might’ve gone down in history as a nation-toppling beauty. Thank goodness for peaceful times.
And then, I finally spotted Himari.
Himari was at her seat, chatting with another girl.
From her demeanor, nothing seemed different from usual. It’s like our breakup was already ancient history. According to Shiroyama-san, she was back to normal the next day…
Then, Himari looked at me.
Our eyes met, and my heart skipped a beat. Come on, don’t get flustered, me.
As if reading my mind perfectly, Himari flashed her signature “Nima~” grin.
It felt like, (“Ohh? Realizing now how big the fish you let go was? You broke up with such a bold declaration, but now you’re regretting losing the right to keep the world’s cutest me all to yourself? Yuu, you’re so pathetic, it’s hilarious!”) I’ll admit she’s the cutest in the world, but her personality is definitely in the same lineage as that witch, Kureha-san, no doubt.
Feeling exasperated by this familiar vibe, a girl from class suddenly shoved her phone at me.
“Hey, Natsume-kun. Let’s exchange LINE!”
“Huh…?”
What’s this all of a sudden?
Oh, right, I don’t think I’ve ever exchanged LINE with girls in class. No wonder I was left out of the group chat…
“Sure…”
I pulled out my phone and exchanged LINE IDs.
Exchanging LINE with a girl makes me feel like I’m finally part of the class. It’s already the third semester, though… As I was getting sentimental, my eyes met Himari’s again.
“…!?”
She hurriedly looked away.
“?”
What was that?
Was she watching me? No, that’s just my ego talking. There’s no way she’d care about me talking to girls now. Puzzled, I tilted my head, noticing the girls I’d exchanged LINE with blushing and giggling excitedly.
“We couldn’t exchange before now.”
“Himari-san was super protective, right?”
“Oh, I wanna do it too!”
“Shh, don’t make a fuss, or Enomoto-san will notice.”
They seem to be having so much fun…
Is this like a dare where exchanging LINE with me brings good luck or something? Come to think of it, after the accessory return fiasco in June, the girls in class were oddly distant.
Oh, I locked eyes with Himari again.
She looked away in a flustered manner, blatantly whistling. What’s up with that…?
The homeroom bell rang, and our teacher arrived.
“Alright, winter break’s over, so get it together. Hurry back to your seats… Oh, Natsume. Single again, huh? Welcome back.”
“…Hey.”
Even the teacher was invited to the group chat, but not me…
Everyone lazily returned to their seats.
I sat down too. A glance to my side revealed Himari’s composed profile. As always, the cutest in the world.
At a glance, nothing’s changed since before winter break.
(Feels like a normal school life…)
Even after breaking up with my first girlfriend, the days keep coming as usual.
I felt a bit melancholic thinking about it, but at least not getting mobbed was a silver lining…
♣♣♣
After the school assembly, during break time.
Something unusual happened at the seat next to mine. Specifically, a group of girls gathered around Himari’s desk, chattering away.
“Hey, Himari-san, you okay~?”
“You’re still hung up on it, right~? You were so in love~”
“Cheer up~”
They’re drawn in by Himari’s seductive aura, trying to comfort her.
Terrifying. Himari’s magic is terrifying. It’s like she’s controlling them with her pheromones. That’s a skill only allowed for evil executives in Sunday morning hero shows.
No, it’s fine, I guess? It’s my own fault.
The problem is Himari herself…
“I know… I gave him everything… but Yuu said he wasn’t satisfied…”
She’s sobbing dramatically, spreading the story.
Every time, she glares at me, and I hear whispers like, “That’s awful,” “The worst,” “Enemy of women.” Girls’ teamwork is scary.
“…”
Feeling uncomfortable, I stood up and wandered into the hallway until the bell rang.
…The class doesn’t know. That’s her advanced fake crying.
Even though I initiated the breakup, this might continue until we move up a grade. That’s just over two months, but it’s already exhausting. I feel like I’m getting an ulcer.
(Well, it’s more peaceful than I expected…)
I’d predicted a future where I’d be completely ostracized.
Surprisingly, everyone treats it like someone else’s drama, even enjoying it. The girls who jabbed at me earlier are a minority. Like before we dated, maybe my relationship with Himari was a form of entertainment for them.
As I was thinking, a voice called from down the hallway.
“Natsume-kuuun!”
“Happy New Year~”
The top gals of the second year, Inoue Mao-san and Yokoyama Azumi-san.
According to Makishima, they’re pretty popular. Thanks to the previous accessory sale, they’ve been friendly with me.
“Happy New Year to you both. What’s up?”
“We came to check on you, Natsume-kun.”
“Me?”
Then, Inoue-san asked with a very serious face.
“Natsume-kun, is it true you broke up with Himari-san?”
“Yup, true…”
My breakup with Himari is crossing class boundaries…
How do they know when they’re in a different class? Oh, right, they’re in Makishima’s class, aren’t they?
“Did you hear it from Makishima?”
“Nah, it was buzzing in your class’s group chat~”
Girls from other classes are invited, but not me…
I’m so mentally down, questioning what a class group chat even is, when Inoue-san tilted her head.
“Huh? But you seem pretty normal, Natsume-kun.”
“Do I?”
“You were way more down during that accessory fiasco before~”
“Oh, that was…”
That was a surprise direct attack by Mera-san.
But I get why Inoue-san’s curious. Honestly, well, you know. Himari and I were ridiculously clingy even before we dated…
“I’m the one who brought up the breakup. It’d be weird if I kept dragging it out.”
“Ehh! Why? Was Himari-san that bad a match?”
“Not really. If anything, it’s more about my accessory work…”
“Hmm…”
Inoue-san gave a “Whoa…” like she was taken aback.
“It’s less like breaking up with a girlfriend and more like a comedy duo that stuck together through years of obscurity, only to split up right after hitting it big on TV, right?”
Mind your own business.
Especially the “years of obscurity” part stings as a creator, so please spare me.
“W-Well, something like that, so I’d appreciate it if you didn’t pry too much into Himari’s side…”
“Got it~ Understood.”
Inoue-san showed understanding. That quick grasp is definitely from her high relationship experience.
Then, she asked curiously.
“So, Natsume-kun, you’re free now?”
“If you put it that way, yeah…”
“What about Enomoto-san?”
“Why Enomoto-san… Well, yeah, I guess that’s how it looks…”
Her usual behavior makes it seem that way…!
Playing dumb here would feel off. Feeling awkward, I answered honestly.
“It’s not like that with Enomoto-san either…”
“Seriously?”
Inoue-san and the others whispered. “I thought he dumped her for Enomoto-san…” “If that were true, Natsume-kun’s life would be over…” Dangerous words, but I’m pretending I didn’t hear. Absolutely nothing heard!
Inoue-san stared at me.
What’s that? Her eyes are sparkling. It feels familiar… Oh, it’s like Himari’s eyes when she’s plotting mischief. I’ve got a really bad feeling.
Before I could dwell, she pushed Yokoyama-san forward in front of me.
“So, how about giving Azu a shot?”
“Huh?”

Yokoyama-san, startled, turned to her friend.
“Mao!? What’re you saying!?”
“It’s fine~ You’ve been saying since first year you like Natsume-kun’s face~”
My face, huh.
It’s not bad… I mean, as a guy, it’s flattering. But being told it’s just my face is a bit complicated for a teenager. Isn’t that credit due to Himari, who’s been policing my grooming since middle school?
“Inoue-san, why so sudden…?”
“This girl’s always whining about wanting a boyfriend but is too shy to act, so she’s never dated. You seem like you wouldn’t do anything bad, so it’s safe, right?”
“I dunno about that…”
Recommending her best friend to a guy who dumped his girlfriend for accessories? Bold. But that light-footedness is probably why she’s the queen of the popular kids.
Yokoyama-san blushed and waved her hands frantically when our eyes met.
“D-Don’t misunderstand! It’s not like I’d take just anyone!”
“That tsundere act is too unique…”
Would any guy fall for that pickup line?
“Come on, Azu, give it a try. It’s totally a chance.”
“Mao, are you an idiot!? Stop pushing me!”
Inoue-san kept shoving Yokoyama-san toward me. I backed up in a panic, hitting the wall and smacking my back. It hurt like hell. Is this a packed city train? It’s just a school hallway!
Why’s everyone so pushy today? Inoue-san usually backs off when someone’s uncomfortable… And it’s getting embarrassing with our bodies this close!
Yokoyama-san, sandwiched between me and Inoue-san, was dizzy. I steadied her shoulder and tried to reason with Inoue-san.
“Sorry. I’m not really up for that right now…”
“What! Azu isn’t good enough!?”
“It’s not that Yokoyama-san’s bad. I just want to focus on accessories…”
Then, Inoue-san suddenly let Yokoyama-san go.
“Oh, right~ Sorry for springing that on you~”
“No, I get you were trying to cheer me up. Thanks.”
But that apology should go to your exhausted, panting friend over there…
Inoue-san pulled Yokoyama-san aside and whispered.
“See? I told you to act more serious. Chickening out at the last second is your bad habit, Azu~”
“B-But…”
Stop holding a debrief right in front of me… Being approached seriously in this situation would make it even more awkward.
As I wallowed in the weird mood, Inoue-san patted my shoulder.
“Well, Natsume-kun’s got lady-killer talent, so if you ever feel like it, give us a shout~”
“My reputation’s been tanking lately. You two aren’t spreading anything, are you?”
Inoue-san laughed (without denying it) and took Yokoyama-san back to their class.
“Homeroom’s starting, so see ya~”
“Yeah…”
I need to fix this thing where Makishima and I are treated like a duo, or it’s gonna be trouble…
(Oh, I gotta get back to class…)
The moment I turned around…
My foot tripped over something.
“Guh…!”
I fell spectacularly.
That hurt! I banged my knee! What was… Oh!
From the shadow of the stairwell, Himari was staring down at me.
Those cold eyes could convince you she’s taken out a person or two… That’s the bloodline of the Inuzuka dynasty. So she’s a conqueror too, huh…
No time to be convinced!
“H-Himari!? What’s that!? Why’d you trip me!?”
“…”
Himari’s gaze briefly flicked down the hallway… toward Inoue-san and the others heading back to class. Then, she turned her murderous stare back to me and said in a cold voice.
“Break.”
Eek!
Leaving that terrifying curse, she walked toward the classroom.
…Then she stopped and turned back. What, you wanna fight? I-I’m not scared! As I braced myself, trembling, Himari muttered.
“Rot and break.”
“Stop making it even worse!?”
This time, she disappeared toward the classroom.
The bell rang. The teacher, arriving for homeroom, asked me as I sat there.
“Natsume, what’re you doing?”
“…I don’t really know.”
I couldn’t say my ex-girlfriend cursed me to break after chatting with a classmate…
♢♢♢
I sat at my desk, fuming.
(Yuu, that jerk, ugh!)
Flirting with other girls right away! Who do you think put all that effort into refining your face!?
(Damn it. Tuning him to my taste backfired…)
Now that Yuu’s free, girls who couldn’t approach him before are making their moves. Enocchi’s still keeping them at bay with her glares, so it’s not too blatant yet.
But I can’t let my guard down. Yuu’s got a good face, you know. I mean, I molded him to my taste, so of course other girls would find him attractive too.
I know, I know.
After breaking up, I have no right to meddle in his life.
But that’s just logic. Humans have emotions too, right? As a narcissist, I can honestly think about dragging him down in times like this☆
Homeroom started, and the teacher mentioned next month’s school trip.
“Alright. We’ve been working on this school trip bit by bit… but it’s time to decide the destination. Tokyo or Okinawa. You’ve thought about it, right?”
A scattered “Yes” rose from the class.
“First, raise your hand for Tokyo. That’s sightseeing famous spots and a report on the capital.”
I raised my hand.
I’d planned on Okinawa, but I promised to meet Kureha-san, so… A glance to my side showed Yuu raising his hand for Tokyo too, of course.
“Alright, about half. Then the rest are Okinawa. That’s diving and activities, plus a cultural heritage report.”
It was decided quickly.
Our class never argues over stuff like this. Even during the cultural festival, decisions were made fast.
“Then, let’s settle the hotel room assignments too. Basically, two per room. No one’s left out, so figure it out.”
We were handed booklets made by the planning committee. I join these events and helped make it too.
The classroom got lively as everyone paired up with their usual friend groups. Yuu, who doesn’t usually hang with guys, was invited by the boy in front of him.
A girl I often talk with in class called out to me.
“Himari-san, wanna share a room?”
“Sure, sounds good~”
As we chatted about hoping for a room with a nice view, she suddenly said.
“But it’s a shame, huh? Breaking up before the school trip.”
Here it comes.
I smirked inwardly at the perfect opportunity.
“Hmm. But looking back, maybe it was the right call…”
“Huh? Why?”
My earnest words made her lean in. Girls, in any era, are always curious about others’ love stories.
I put a hand to my mouth, shyly looking down. At my level, blushing on command is a piece of cake. I’ve used this trick to fluster Yuu plenty of times!
Building suspense until her curiosity peaked, I delivered.
“His fetishes… were kinda extreme…”
“Huh…”
Her face turned bright red at my words.
At the next desk, Yuu, who’d been calmly chatting with his roommate, choked and sputtered.
(Ha! He was eavesdropping, wasn’t he?)
Smirking inwardly, Yuu turned red and raised his voice.
“Himari!? Don’t spread weird stuff to classmates!”
“Ehh? What’s weird about it? Stop accusing me falsely~”
“You said my fetishes are extreme!”
“Wow, Yuu, you’re the one who wanted to break up, but you’re still obsessed with my every move? Showing possessiveness to your ex is so clingy~”
“It’s natural to keep an eye on someone spreading rumors about me!”
This progressed went so perfectly, I was in high spirits.
Oh, this is it.
The moment I shine brightest is when I’m teasing Yuu! I really feel like I live for these moments!
…As I was reveling in my triumph.
“Ah…!”
For some reason, Yuu’s face went pale.
Huh? What’s wrong?
The classmates, who’d been eagerly watching, suddenly fell silent. Their gazes were all fixed behind me.
(Hmm? I’ve got a bad feeling…)
I slowly turned around.
—Sasaki-sensei stood there like a Nio statue, a deep “💢” etched on his forehead.
…Oh no. I got so caught up in teasing Yuu that I forgot to activate Himari Magic!
My mouth twitched as I barely managed to squeak out.
“S-Sasaki-sensei. Why’re you here?”
“I happened to pass by and noticed this class was awfully noisy. When I peeked in, you two were having a lovers’ spat.”
Sasaki-sensei gave a big cough.
“Inuzuka, what time is this?”
“I-It’s time to discuss the school trip, sir…”
And a huge thunderbolt struck the classroom.
“Inuzuka, I thought you were a serious student.”
“I’m sorry…”
“Swear you’ll never disrupt homeroom again, and I’ll spare calling Hibari.”
“Thank you so much…”
Faced with such merciful treatment, I surrendered completely.
Lesson learned.
Don’t spread bad rumors about your ex-boyfriend☆
♣♣♣
What a mess…
I got a knuckle to the head as an accomplice. Isn’t that totally unfair?
After Sasaki-sensei left, homeroom proceeded smoothly. Once the school trip details were settled, we cleaned up and headed home.
(At least it’s set for Tokyo, thank goodness.)
I’d promised to meet Tenma-kun and the others on this trip. I’d shared the schedule, but I wasn’t sure if Tokyo would be confirmed, so I’m relieved.
The teacher bundled the documents, tapping them neatly.
“That’s it for today. Those not in clubs, go straight home, no detours.”
Everyone grabbed their bags and stood up.
I let out a breath.
It felt pretty normal, somehow.
Apart from barely talking to Himari, nothing really changed. Classmates teased me about the breakup, but in a way, that’s normal too.
Well, whatever. Peace is best.
I’ll finish today’s errands, plan the next accessory sale… No, wait, I’ve got my convenience store shift first. For the sake of my future wages, I need to suck up to my beloved big sister.
Winter break’s over, but what’s Mera-san doing about her job? We got the compensation for the accessories, but I haven’t heard her say she’s quitting.
Thinking about that, I let my guard down. I grabbed my bag, stood up, and reflexively turned to the side.
“Alright, Himari. Let’s head home.”
—The entire class froze.
I stood rigid, cold sweat pouring as I realized my mistake.
(Crap, I messed up…)
…This is, you know.
Like in elementary school, accidentally calling a female teacher “Mom” and feeling that same embarrassment. These guys were pretending to leave but definitely eavesdropping…
My classmates showed all sorts of reactions.
Some looked shocked, like, “Why!?” Others eyed the fun development with curiosity. The ones instantly readying their phone cameras were way too trained…
Himari gave the most delighted “Nima~~~~” ever.
That grin said it all. (“Ohh~ You want to go home with the world’s cutest Himari-chan that badly? Got it, got it~ Inviting me unconsciously even after breaking up? It’s practically carved into your DNA~”) She’s insanely cute, but I want to grill her—did you ever look that happy when we were dating?
(This girl’s so annoying at times like this…!)
Whispers around me: “Why’d they break up?” “Dunno.” “Is it fake?” “Why fake it?” “Maybe they broke up to spice things up with some kinky play?” Shut up. My fetishes aren’t that weird. Himari and I really, truly broke up!
Wait, why did we break up…? I was starting to lose myself when.
“Yuu-kun. What’re you doing…?”
Turning around, Enomoto-san was at the classroom door.
Her entrance made the class buzz. …Why the buzz? Stop it. It’s making this feel all serious…
But for me, this was definitely a lifeline.
Pretending to forget my blunder, I called out to Enomoto-san.
“Oh, right, Enomoto-san, we promised to go home together, didn’t we? You said you’d pick me up after class in LINE yesterday.”
“Why’re you explaining so loudly…?”
“Huh? I’m always like this, right?”
“…Yeah, I guess.”
A single thread dangled in hell. Was it Dazai Osamu? No, Akutagawa Ryunosuke. Like a wretched ghost, I clung to that thread.
Then, a mischievous impulse sprouted. Can’t blame me. When you get some mental breathing room, you think of dumb stuff. Plus, Himari’s been jabbing at me all day, and I was a bit worn out.
I turned and smirked at Himari.
Yup, the classic “I’m not bothered by breaking up with you” flex. Kinda… okay, really petty, but she’s doing it too, right? So we’re even.
Himari reacted blatantly.
“…!”
Her annoyed face made me smirk inwardly.
Felt a bit satisfying. It’s frustrating to be the only one taking hits. Sure, she could say I started the breakup, but I don’t like being on the receiving end.
As I walked down the hallway, chuckling evilly to myself, Enomoto-san turned around.
“Yuu-kun, you seem cheerful.”
“Huh? Do I?”
“Yeah. Like you’re having fun.”
“Oh, uh, that’s…”
What now? I can’t say I was grinning because getting back at my ex was too fun. That’d make me a total jerk. I am a jerk, but still…
As I fumbled, Enomoto-san gave a soft, gentle smile. Her cuteness made me forget to breathe.
—For a moment, it was like time stopped between us.
Then, a sharp iron claw gripped my head.
“Using me to compete with Hii-chan is annoying.”
“Gaaah! Sorry! I’m really sorry! I won’t do it again!”
She’d seen right through me.
After crushing my evil, Enomoto-san said with a refreshed face.
“Alright, let’s go.”
“Right…”
We’re heading to Himari’s house now.
Sounds weird, but it’s not like that. I’m picking up accessory-making tools left at her place. I’ve already cleared it with Hibari-san.
We grabbed our bikes from the rack and rode down the familiar road.
(Going to Himari’s house after breaking up with her feels so nerve-wracking…)
From our LINE chats, Hibari-san didn’t seem any different.
Is he being lenient with my selfishness as an adult, or just exasperated? Either way, it’s awkward to face him, so I chose a weekday when he’s at work. Call me a coward, I don’t care…
It’s a weekday afternoon, so only Himari’s mom, Ikuyo-san, should be home. That’s awkward in its own way… but it’s fine, right? She won’t suddenly point a hunting rifle at me, will she? Or maybe tomorrow morning, I’ll be lined up at the market with the game?
“So nervous…”
“Yuu-kun…”
Sorry, Enomoto-san.
You’re looking at me all worried, but this isn’t about heartbreak. It’s just the feeling of a rabbit jumping into a predator’s den.
Himari’s house… its distinctive outer gate came into view.
A large, single-story wooden house, like an old samurai residence. The vast grounds are impressive, but the inner Japanese garden is so elegant. The seasonal flowers, regularly maintained by professionals, are beautiful.
Passing through the garden, I rang the doorbell with a racing heart. Soon, Ikuyo-san appeared. Her cool, beautiful charm was as strong as ever.
I swallowed hard, and Ikuyo-san said matter-of-factly.
“The accessory tools are inside. Take what you need.”
“Oh, yes. …Thank you.”
With that, she went back inside.
Normal… No, it felt a bit colder than usual. My breakup with Himari seems to have put distance between me and the Inuzuka family.
Anyway, she said to take what I need, so let’s hurry.
With Enomoto-san, I headed to the guest room we always used for work.
“Yuu-kun, what’s that…?”
“Huh?”
On the way, I found one of my accessory tools on the floor. Specifically, a magnifying glass used for crafting. Right in the middle of the hallway…
Why’s it here?
It doesn’t seem like it was dropped while moving. You’d notice if you dropped it. Plus, it’s too big to leave lying around. It’s a tripping hazard.
“Dunno, but let’s take it… Hmm?”
For some reason, another tool was lying further down the hallway. No, this feels deliberately placed in the middle. Why?
(Can’t just leave them…)
I picked it up, and there was another one further ahead.
Picking them up one by one, I moved down the hallway. This path leads to…
“Himari’s room?”
“Maybe Hii-chan brought the tools to her room?”
No, something feels off.
Enomoto-san seems to sense it too. I mean, Himari shouldn’t be back yet. If she were frantically hiding the tools, we’d definitely hear something.
Which means…
“It’s a trap.”
“Who set it? For what purpose?”
“I don’t know, but…”
Enomoto-san put a hand to her chin, murmuring, “Hmm…”
“Aren’t you overthinking it? For now, we need to finish collecting the accessory tools before we can figure anything out.”
Yeah, she’s right.
No matter how genius the Inuzuka family is, they wouldn’t go out of their way to mess with their daughter’s ex-boyfriend, right? This is just a coincidence—my accessory tools somehow wandered into the hallway on their own. That’s absolutely impossible, but since this is the Inuzuka house, it’s not entirely out of the question. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a zashiki-warashi sitting in the corner of a room.
Guided along, we collected the accessory tools and finally reached the last one.
“As expected, it’s Himari’s room…”
“Yup, Hii-chan’s room…”
Led here step by step, I’m now standing in front of my ex-girlfriend’s room.
To an outsider, this would look insanely suspicious, but this is the Inuzuka house, a lawless zone, so it’s not that weird. Anywhere else, and I’d be done for…
Hesitating to just barge in, Enomoto-san asked.
“What’s left to grab?”
“The half-made parts. The ones for the next seasonal accessories.”
“Those are important, huh…”
“Yeah…”
Even if I prepare the flowers, without these, it’s pointless.
I could use store-bought accessory parts in a pinch, but… it just feels off. There’s this indescribable, nagging sensation that lingers.
Enomoto-san clenched her fist tightly.
“I’ll go.”
“Enomoto-san…?”
Then, her eyes sparkled with a twinkle.
“If the people in this house are up to something, their target’s probably you, Yuu-kun. Even if iron bars come crashing down, I’ll be fine.”
“I mean, that’s not… I can’t say it won’t happen…!”
The people in this house are seriously beyond normal human logic.
With that, Enomoto-san boldly entered Himari’s room. I instinctively closed my eyes, praying for her safety… Then, she let out a confused cry.
“N-No way… This is…?”
“Enomoto-san? What’s wrong!?”
I rushed into Himari’s room in a panic.
And there, I froze, eyes wide at an unimaginable sight.
“This is…!?”
There—my room was there.
I know that sounds crazy, but there’s no other way to describe it. Where Himari’s room should’ve been, my room was somehow there. Specifically, the stylish desk, bed, and trinkets that should’ve been in Himari’s room had vanished, replaced by furniture identical to my own bedroom. On top of that, there was a table set up like an accessory workshop.
The cherry on top was the ceiling.
A huge banner declared, “Welcome to Yuu-kun’s Room!” The sheer insanity of the setup left Enomoto-san and me standing there, dumbfounded.
“Heh heh. Looks like you like it.”
““…!?””
A voice from behind made us whirl around.
Standing there was—
“H-Hibari-san!?”
A breathtakingly suave man leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. As always, he wore an elegant, expensive suit without a single wrinkle. When he took off his sunglasses, his dazzling white teeth sparkled with a twinkle. Where’s the light source…?
“Hibari-san, it’s a weekday afternoon. What about work…?”
“How could I work when Yuu-kun’s coming over? Obviously.”
That “obviously” makes no sense to me…
Or maybe it’s a thing in society? If I were a socially savvy businessman, I might’ve said, “That’s awesome!” but I’m just a regular high schooler, so I couldn’t. No way that’s right.
“Heh heh. Don’t worry. I had a critical meeting this afternoon with important clients that could determine the fate of the town’s commerce guild, but I delegated it all to my subordinates♪”
“Please go back right now! I’m begging you!”
Hibari-san laughed heartily… Wait, that’s a joke, right? My family won’t end up jobless and have our house seized starting tomorrow, will they?
As I grew increasingly uneasy for a different reason, the window suddenly opened. There, standing outside, was Ikuyo-san, who was supposed to have left, striking a cool and beautiful smug pose.
“Yuu-kun, welcome to the Inuzuka house.”
“What’s going on!?”
“Exactly what it sounds like. Because you broke up with Himari, we had to change our plans.”
“C-Change plans!?”
“Want to hear about it?”
“No, I don’t!”
Because I can already guess!
Given the state of this room, it’s gotta be something ridiculous, right!? Like kicking Himari out and adopting me as their son or some absurd nonsense!?
Ikuyo-san, perhaps displeased that I refused the explanation, puffed out her cheeks slightly. Hey, this beautiful enchantress is kinda cute…
As I tried to figure out how to escape with Enomoto-san… No, escape is impossible. For an ordinary guy like me to flee from the otherworldly realm of the Inuzuka house is beyond reckless. You’d need to be descended from Edo-era ninjas at the very least.
Then, Hibari-san patted my shoulder with a sparkling smile.
“If you already get it, this’ll be quick. Come on, let’s head to city hall. We’ll transfer your family registry. That’s what you wanted, right?”
That meant going back to work like a proper adult… Ugh, why does it feel like I’m the one in the wrong when I’m supposed to be the voice of reason?
“Um, Hibari-san? I’m really grateful for the sentiment, but this house is supposed to be Himari’s place. It’s wrong for someone like me to cause her to be kicked out…”
“Oh? We’re not kicking Himari out.”
“Huh. Really…?”
I was a bit deflated… No, this isn’t the time to be deflated. They’re not about to say I should live with Himari, are they? That’d be way too much.
But Hibari-san, reading my thoughts, shook his head with a gentle smile.
“Yuu-kun, you’re such a worrier. Do you think we’d do something so cruel to you?”
“Th-Then…”
“Of course, we’re not saying to live together. Himari’s room, starting today, is over there.”
“Huh?”
I followed his gaze to the window Ikuyo-san had opened.
In a corner of the beautiful Japanese garden stood—
A doghouse.
In a corner of the garden, accessible from the veranda, was a simple wooden doghouse.
…Huh? That’s weird~
The Inuzuka family doesn’t have a dog, do they~?
Maybe they decided to get one since I’m here~? Sure, we have Daifuku at home, but it’s not like I’m some huge animal lover~?
As I stood in the midst of utter confusion, Ikuyo-san gave a nihilistic smile.
“Yuu-kun, don’t misunderstand. We’re not so heartless as to make our daughter live in an ordinary doghouse.”
“Huh?”
What does that mean?
They pointed to that doghouse as their daughter’s room.
In this situation, what kind of hope could there be?
(Wait. This is a place where common sense doesn’t apply… The Inuzuka house!)
That doghouse is just a facade, a mere entrance.
Or maybe there’s a vast underground space designed for comfort… It’s possible. It’s the Inuzuka house, after all. More fantastical than your average fantasy novel.
Thinking about it, I got super excited. Maybe it’s actually kinda cool? If anything, I’d want to live there myself.
As my teenage boy heart raced with anticipation, I swallowed hard…
“It was handmade by Grandpa.”
“I don’t think being DIY makes it any more appealing…!”
Like those overseas TV shows, right? The kitchen’s too small, so the husband renovates it himself— that kind of thing. But a grandpa making a doghouse for his granddaughter is way too much, Gorouzaemon-san…
“Oh? Speaking of, where’s Gorouzaemon-san?”
“He overdid it making this and threw out his back.”
“I-I see…”
How do I react to that?
Is it okay to say “Get well soon”? Or is that bad? Someone tell me, internet etiquette expert!
But this vibe feels nostalgic. Honestly, I’m already full.
“Enomoto-san, I’m at my limit, so please help… Oh!”
I thought she’d been quiet, but she was happily rearranging the room.
Specifically, she was placing cushions she’d found somewhere to make the workspace cozier. Is she setting up a spot to chill???
(What do I do? Enomoto-san’s joined the doghouse-okay faction…)
She seems to have given up on persuading Hibari-san. I completely agree, and I’m half-tempted to just go with the flow…
No, no, that’s not okay. I can’t live a civilized life while Himari’s stuck in a doghouse. That’s too inhumane… Wait. What if Himari moves to my house, and we swap? Saku-neesan would agree in a heartbeat. Why am I looking for positive loopholes…?
As I hesitated on how to decline, I sensed someone at the gate.
Turning around, Himari was eyeing me suspiciously.
“Huh? Yuu, what’re you doing?”
I flinched.
Why am I flinching? It’s not like I’m hung up on her. No way. I’m cool. Just answer normally.
“Just here to pick up my accessory tools. What about you?”
“Uh, this is my house?”
Oh, right…
Crap. My nerves are showing. I need to grab the tools and get out before I slip up and get teased…
“Hibari-san gave me permission…”
“I know that. I’m heading to my room.”
That Himari, acting all nonchalant…
Well, yeah. For Himari, breaking up with me is no big deal. Our relationship experience levels are just too different.
…Wait, is Himari casually heading for the doghouse???
“Himari? That’s not your room…”
“…Huh!?”
Himari hurriedly turned around.
“I-It’s not like I’m flustered because you’re here! Don’t get the wrong idea! I didn’t come home for you!”
“Himari!? Calm down! That tsundere act is stealing my shtick!”
And cover your butt! It’s super awkward to look at!
As we bickered loudly, Hibari-san and Ikuyo-san watched, murmuring.
“Why did you two break up?”
“Why did you two break up?”
That’s some creepy harmonizing!
Unable to stand it anymore, I took advantage of the chaos to flee the Inuzuka house. By the way, I successfully retrieved the accessory tools.
…Breaking up with a girlfriend is way tougher afterward. Normally, it wouldn’t turn out like this, though.
