Chapter 3 | Asanagi Umi and Amami Yuu
The following week, Monday. For most peopleâstudents, workersâitâs the gloomy start of the week. Naturally, that applies to me too, but today, for some reason, I was feeling even more down than everyone else.
ââŠI wonder if itâll be okay.â
While gazing at the silhouette of our school, built on a leveled hill, from midway along the commute, I let out a sigh all by myself.
The reason, of course, was what happened last weekend.
I ended up saying something unnecessary to Amami-san and her group. The more time passes, the more embarrassed I feel every time I recall that scene.
ââŠSorry, but thereâs absolutely no way.â
âUghâŠâ
I know itâs my own fault.
Itâs too late to regret it now, but for a mere loner like me, why did I have to act so high and mighty with that know-it-all tone?
âThereâs no way I can step into the classroom⊠The vibeâs gonna turn sour the moment I do.â
Amami-san probably has Asanagi covering for her, but the rest of our classmates wonât let it slide that easily.
I imagine it. The group that was cheerfully chatting in their little circle suddenly glaring at me like Iâm trash the second I walk in, treating me with outright hostility.
From being the classâs irrelevant âbackground airâ to the unmistakable âoutcast.â
Maybe Iâm overthinking it a bit, or maybe itâll just end up as pointless worrying.
At times like this, if I had someone to talk to, itâd probably lighten my mood a lot.
âSomeone to talk toâŠâ
Well, thereâs Asanagi, at least. Outside of my parents, sheâs the only real friend registered in my phoneâs contacts.
If I asked Asanagi, sheâd definitely listen. She might tease me a bit, but sheâs so earnest and serious that I trust her on that front.
Still, leaning on Asanagi so easily with this didnât feel quite right to me.
At school, Asanagiâs someone everyone relies onâAmami-san, our classmates, even our homeroom teacher. Sheâs a top student, well-mannered, the classâs model honor student.
But I know the truth. Even Asanagi sometimes wants to break free from her usual role and act a little carefree.
I remember what Asanagi told me last week.
Sheâd found someone who coincidentally shared her hobby, mustered the courage to talk to me and become friends, and finally found a refuge thereâyet I canât just lean on her like that. If I did, Asanagi wouldnât have anywhere to escape to anymore.
Well, thatâs just an excuse. In the end, I just donât have the guts to contact Asanagi over something this trivial.
ââHey, morning!â
âMorn⊠ing.â
I quietly replied to the PE teacher greeting students at the gate and headed to the classroom. It was almost time for morning homeroom. Except for a few kids still at morning practice, pretty much everyone was already there.
Keeping my presence as close to ânothingâ as possible, I slipped into my seat.
So far, it didnât seem like the disaster Iâd imagined was happening.
âMaehara-kun, youâre a bit late today, huh?â
âMorning⊠I kinda overslept.â
My little chat with Ooyama-kun was as usual, and I didnât hear any weird gossip either.
If the day could just end peacefully like this, thatâd be great.
Thatâs what I thoughtâright until that moment.
ââŠUm, Maehara-kun, can I talk to you for a sec?â
As I sat down and put my textbooks away, Amami-san approached me, her soft blonde hair swaying gently.
In an instant, the lively classroom went dead silent.
âHuh? M-MeâŠ?â
Sheâd called my name, so it had to be me, but I couldnât help asking back anyway.
Curious stares from the whole class zeroed in on me.
The most beautiful girl in the classâheck, probably the whole gradeâwanting to talk to the undisputed loner? Thatâs gotta sum up how everyone felt right then.
As the one involved, Iâd rather they spare me, but to everyone else watching, it was pure intrigue.
âSorry for springing this on you. I was hoping we could chat about what happened last Friday⊠Is that okay?â
âNo, itâs not like itâs a problem, butâŠâ
âHuh? What? Whatâs going on?
âNo idea, man.
As my classmates whispered in their little groups, I glanced at Asanagi for a split second.
I donât know what Asanagi talked about with Amami-san over the weekend, but she probably advised her to apologize ASAP.
Asanagi made an apologetic gesture toward me with a wry faceâmeaning even she didnât expect Amami-san to do this.
âI really upset you back then, and Iâm so sorry. I donât know anything about you, Maehara-kun, yet I just assumed youâd have more fun hanging out with everyone and said something so thoughtless.â
âN-No, Iâm the one who should apologize. I knew you didnât mean any harm, Amami-san, but I couldnât help saying it like that. You donât need to go out of your way to say sorry.â
She mustâve been really bothered by it, because Amami-sanâs expression visibly drooped, clear as day.
Iâd rather she not care about meâor better yet, just leave me aloneâbut to her, thatâs probably unacceptable.
Sheâs not a bad person by any means, and thatâs one of her good points, but shaking off Asanagiâs restraint and stirring up unnecessary rumors isnât exactly ideal.
âSo, will you forgive me? Youâre not mad anymore, right?â
âY-Yeah. Iâm not mad, and Iâve been thinking I mightâve gone too far back then too. So, uh, Iâm the one who should say sorry.â
âNo, no way! Iâm the one whoâs sorry.â
As both Amami-san and I bowed our heads at the same time, the chime signaling the end of the break rang, and our homeroom teacher stepped into the room.
If this kept up, itâd turn into an âNo, Iâm sorryâ âNo, I amâ apology battle, so the timing was perfect to cut it off.
âAlright, everyone, take your seats⊠Huh, itâs awfully quiet in here. Something up?â
The teacher looked puzzled, but most of the class probably felt the same.
Thatâs how shocking the scene just now mustâve been.
Naturally, that includes me, one of the people involved.
âAnyway, Iâm not bothered by it, so letâs just call it done, okay?â
âYeah! Thanks, Maehara-kun! Oh, but I kinda wanna talk a bit more⊠Are you free today?â
âHuh? Well, yeah, I guessâŠâ
Weekends aside, I donât have any plans today. Or probably ever, for that matter.
âThen itâs settled! Iâll let you know when later⊠Uh, the number you gave me last timeâs still good, right?â
âEh?â
âFue?â
The moment Amami-san let that slip, it was like another bomb dropped in the classroom.
âWait, seriously? Did you hear that?
âThat guy knows Amami-sanâs number?
âToday wasnât their first talk!?
âMan, Iâm so jealousâŠ
The not-so-subtle whispers reached my ears. She probably let it slip without thinking, but that was one detail too many.
âHuh? Huh? Did I just say something bad?â
âAmami-san, that was supposed to be a secretâŠâ
ââŠOh!â
She seemed to realize, but the first time we talked wasnât Friday at the arcadeâit was a bit earlier, behind the storage shed.
Iâd apologized to Asanagi and gotten her forgiveness for secretly watching, but the fact I was with Amami-san was a secret, and Asanagi didnât know weâd swapped numbers either.
So what I was really afraid of wasnât the class, butâ
âHaha⊠Anyway, see you later!â
âY-Yeah.â
After Amami-san trotted back to her seat with cute little steps, my phone buzzed in my pocket almost instantly.
No need to guess who it was from. The sender was already pulling out her textbook, staring at the blackboard.
(Asanagi: OK)
Seeing Asanagiâs message, a small âHicâ escaped my throat.
Iâd definitely have to apologize sincerely later⊠but would Asanagi forgive me even with a full-on dogeza?
The morning incident quickly became the classâs hot topic for the day.
Homeroom ended, lunch passed, and even now after school, the curious stares and whispersâsome borderline gossipâhadnât stopped⊠In fact, theyâd only gotten worse as time went on.
Truth is, my only connection with Amami-san was being there by chance when Asanagi was confessed to. I gave her my number, but we hadnât talked beyond that until recently.
âHey, whatâs the deal with Amami-san and that guy?
âSo unexpected. Are they secretly dating or something?
âNo way, thatâs impossible.
âThen whatâs with last week?
âBeats me. Some love triangle mess? Nah, thatâs too far-fetched.
They didnât care about the truth, just spinning wild fantasies about me and Amami-san all day long. Man, some people have too much free time.
âSorry to keep you waiting, Maehara-kun! Letâs go!â
âOh, uh, sureâŠâ
Amami-sanâs voice mustâve reached her ears too, but she ignored the noise completely and came over to me with her usual dazzling smile.
âŠAnd right beside her, naturally, was Asanagi.
ââŠSorry. I figured itâd be weird with just the two of us, so I hope you donât mind me tagging along as Yuuâs escort.â
ââŠYeah, I donât mind at all.â
Actually, Iâd be in trouble if Asanagi werenât here.
I can talk casually with Asanagi since weâre friends, but thatâs because itâs her. With Amami-san, itâs a different story.
âSorry, Maehara-kun. I get nervous alone with a boy⊠Oh, but Umiâs super tight-lipped, so donât worry!â
âI see.â
Thatâs something I trust without question.
After all, sheâs kept our secret friendship hidden even from her best friend.
âSo, thatâs the deal. Looking forward to it, Maehara-kun?â
âY-Yeah, looking forward to it, Asanagi⊠san.â
We shook hands, playing up the âfirst time talkingâ vibe.
âŠHer grip feels kinda strong. No, it hurts. It really hurts, so please let go soon.
With my hand taking serious damage, I ended up heading home with âthe classâs cutest girlâ and âthe second cutest girlââthe three of us together.
From the left, itâs âAmami-san,â âme,â âAsanagi,â sandwiched between two beauties.
Part of me kinda wants to bolt, but being stuck between them limits my movement.
âHey, Yuu.â
âYeah⊠Man, Nina-chiâs the same as ever.â
âHuh? Nitta-san?â
(Sheâs tailing us from behind. Sheâs doing a good job, though.)
Asanagi muttered quietly in my ear.
Sure enough, I could just barely spot a ponytail with a scrunchie peeking out from a shadow a little ways back.
I hadnât noticed until Asanagi pointed it out, but to these two who know her, it was obvious. Well, thatâs normal for friends, I guess.
(Hmm⊠Guess weâll have to pull that one, sorry Nina-chi. âŠUmi.)
(Yeah.)
Amami-san and Asanagi, with me in the middle, were whispering about something.
Seems like they had a plan brewing.
(You two planning something against Nitta-san?)
(Huh? Just escaping, thatâs all.)
(If weâre being tailed, we shake her off. Obviously, right?)
(Is it obvious)
Still, being followed isnât exactly pleasant, so I decided to go along with them.
(At that T-junction up there, we split up and dash. Me and Maehara-kun go left, Yuu goes right.)
(Got it. Oh, where do we meet up? If itâs a shop around here, options are limited.)
Location, huh. For students, itâd probably be some family restaurant, but Nitta-san would obviously know those too.
A place our classmates donât know, where the three of us can talk without worrying about prying eyesâŠ
(âŠHow about my place?)
(Huh? Maehara-kunâs house?)
(Yeah. Itâs close, and no one else knows it. My parents wonât be home at this hour either.)
Momâs at work and wonât be back till late. Itâs not a bad setup, all things considered. Iâve even tidied up a bit since Asanagi started coming over.
(âŠUmi, what do you think?)
(Well, Maehara-kun doesnât seem to mean any harm, so Iâm fine with it.)
Itâs free and practical, I thought, but their reactions werenât exactly enthusiastic.
(Huh? Did I say something weird?)
(Oh, no, itâs not that! Itâs justâŠ)
(Yuuâs just saying itâs kinda weird to suddenly invite girls to your house.)
(S-Stop it, UmiâŠ!)
(Oh.)
Asanagiâs comment made it click. Officially, this is supposed to be my first real talk with Asanagi, and itâs about the same with Amami-san.
Inviting them to a private space out of nowhere when weâre barely friends isnât exactly normal. Come to think of it, Asanagiâs jabbed me about this before.
(Sorry, I didnât mean it like that⊠I just thought itâd be convenient, and it slipped out.)
(No, itâs fine! We donât doubt you, Maehara-kun. I was just surprised, thatâs all. Iâve never been to a boyâs house before.)
Even so, Amami-sanâs ears were bright red. I figured sheâd have some tolerance since she chats with guys in class, but she seems to draw a firm line here.
(Then itâs settled. Weâll meet at Maehara-kunâs place at 5 PM. Iâll go with him first, so Iâll text you the location later.)
(Got it!)
(âŠAlright, here we go. One, two, three!)
At Asanagiâs signal, me and Asanagi, plus Amami-san, split into two groups and bolted.
âAh! Theyâre running! Wait up!â
Nitta-sanâs voice echoed behind us, but this residential areaâs got twisty streets. Once we turn a corner and lose her, catching upâs near impossible.
âWhoâd listen to some paparazzi? Come on, Maehara, this way!â
âH-Heyââ
Asanagi grabbed my hand so naturally it felt seamless, and we ran side by side down the sunset-orange path home.
âAsanagi.â
âWhat?â
âYou look like youâre having fun.â
âDo I? Must be your imagination.â
Not sure if it was from running or nerves, but Asanagiâs hand, half a step ahead pulling mine, felt slightly damp.
After successfully ditching Nitta-san and getting home, I was prepping some snacks with Asanagi when the intercom at the entrance buzzed.
âYoohoo, Maehara-kun! Amami Yuu has arrived!â
On the intercom screen, Amami-sanâs bright, cute smile filled the frame.
She mustâve run hardâsome of her bangs were stuck to her forehead with sweat.
âSorry, Iâll unlock it now. The doorâs open, so just come in.â
âOkay!â
I unlocked it and waited for Amami-san. The roomâs a bit messy with sudden guests, but it canât be helped. I tossed what looked like Momâs strewn pajamas into the washer and cleared the living room table.
âMaehara, whereâs the dishware? Shouldnât we put the snacks on plates?â
âTop shelf of the cabinet next to the fridge has the guest stuff. There should be cups and saucers nearby too, so grab enough for everyone.â
âGot it.â
Asanagi and I split the work to set up the bare minimum for hosting.
Asanagiâs a guest too, so she couldâve just relaxed on the sofa,
âIâll help too,â
she said, so I let her pitch in.
âExcuse me~! Oh, so this is Maehara-kunâs place.â
âSorry itâs so cramped. Itâs just me and my mom here.â
âOh, sorry! I didnât mean to be rude again⊠This is my first time doing this, so I just blurted it out.â
Amami-san said, her cheeks tinting slightly as she looked down.
Her reaction felt so fresh and innocent.
ââŠWhatâs that look, Maehara-kun? Got something to say to me?â
âHuh? N-No, whatâre you talking about?â
Asanagi, lounging on the sofa, shot me a half-lidded stare. Sheâd poked around the place curiously the first few times she came over, but now sheâs totally at home.
Still, since this is her âfirst visitâ (officially), I gave her a quick glance to play it safe and guided Amami-san to the living room table.
âWow, a cookie tin! I love these. They feel kinda fancy.â
âReally? Itâs just something we got for guests, so help yourself.â
âFor real? Awesome! Hey, Umi, eat with me!â
âSure, sure. But wipe your sweat firstâhereâs a handkerchief.â
âThanks⊠Hey, I can do this much myself. Stop treating me like a kid.â
âHigh schoolers are still kids. And wash your hands before eating.â
âJeez⊠Hmph.â
Asanagi casually looked after a pouting Amami-san.
Itâs a scene Iâve seen at school plenty of times, but this must be their usual dynamic. Theyâre like sisters.
Asanagi fussing over Amami-san, and Amami-san sulking but letting her do it.
With their looks, it made for a pretty picturesque moment.
âAmami-san, what about drinks? Coffee, tea⊠or weâve got green tea too.â
âHmm, coffee then. Oh, and Iâd love lots of sugar and milk. Iâm not great with bitter stuff.â
âGot it. Oh yeah, youâre big on sweets, right?â
âYeah! Wait, did you actually remember my self-introduction?â
âUh⊠yeah, I guess. You really stood out back then, Amami-san.â
I put the kettle on and started prepping the coffee.
Amami-san likes it with tons of sugar and milk, Iâll take just sugar, and Asanagi prefers it bitter, so just milk for herâ
âHey, Umi. You didnât ask for yours? Maehara-kunâs already making yours too.â
ââŠâ
The second Amami-san said that, I froze with my back to them.
Crap. I got so used to it that I forgot Iâm supposed to ask Asanagiâs preference too.
I suggested coming here myself, yet Iâm not fully playing the âbarely know Asanagiâ part right.
âHm? Oh, I asked before you got here. Coffee, no sugar, with milk. Right, Maehara-kun?â
â! Y-Yeah, thatâs right.â
Asanagi swooped in to cover for me while I was panicking. Since we got here first, it doesnât sound off. Nice save.
âSo, weâre here to talk about last week, but first⊠Yuu, and Maehara-kun.â
âYeah, what?â
ââŠWhat is it?â
âWhy do you two have each otherâs numbers?â
ââUrk.ââ
Asanagiâs eyes narrowed as she looked at us. Her mouth smiled, but her eyes didnât.
âW-Well, you seeâŠâ
Me and Amami-san fessed up and apologized right away.
Very sincerely, I might add.
ââI see. Well, I figured it was something like that.â
âSorry, Umi. I knew I shouldnât peek, but I couldnât help worrying about youâŠâ
âIâm sorry too, for keeping it from you till now.â
â? Whyâs Maehara-kun apologizing? You just got dragged into me and Nina-chiâs mess. You didnât do anything wrong.â
âThatâs true, but⊠even so, I couldnât stop you two, so I feel kinda responsible.â
Iâd already gotten Asanagiâs forgiveness for the peeking thing, but keeping Amami-sanâs number a secret had been eating at me.
âJeez⊠Yuu, come here a sec. You too, Maehara-kun.â
â? Like this?â
ââŠOkay.â
As told, me and Amami-san leaned our faces toward Asanagi.
Then, in an instant, a sharp pain shot through my forehead.
âOwâŠ!â
âGuhâŠ!?â
ââThere, punishment done.â
Asanagi had flicked our foreheads⊠but that was way too strong for a flick.
My foreheadâs still tingling⊠Thereâs no blood, right?
âIâm not mad or anything, just drawing a line. Feels better this way, right, Yuu?â
âYeah⊠Sorry, Maehara-kun. You got caught up in this because I said weird stuff about secretsâŠâ
âI-Itâs fine⊠No, seriously, that hurt.â
It ended with this for now, but Iâd better not keep secrets from Asanagi again.
At this rate, Iâd run out of foreheads to flick.
âAlright, thatâs that. Bring it up again, and Iâll get serious next time.â
âHuh?â
Serious next time?
That last one was bad enoughâwhatâs beyond thatâŠ?
âAmami-sanâŠâ
When I looked at her, she met my eyes and nodded silently, her face pale.
âNo wayâŠâ
ââWanna try one for real?â
âIâll pass. Seriously.â
Asanagiâs forehead flicks are terrifying.
Anyway, with that settled, we finally got to the main topic.
But first, we decided to snack on the treats before the drinks got cold.
âOh, these cookies are good! Umi, try this chocolate-covered one.â
âYeah, tasty. If you alternate with these salty chips, itâs a âsweetâ âsaltyâ loop.â
âRight? This is criminal. For my weight too.â
The two of them were feeding each other snacks like usual, all buddy-buddy. Even for best friends, being this close is pretty rare, huh?
â? Oh, sorry! Weâre hogging it allâhere, Maehara-kun, you too.â
âOh, uh, sureââ
I took the cookie Amami-san offered and bit into it.
âHow is it? Good?â
âYeah. Well, I picked it out myself, so.â
The butter and bitter chocolate cacao smell nice, and the sweetness is just right.
âHere, Maehara-kun. This oneâs good too.â
âOh, yeah⊠Youâre right.â
I nibbled on another cookie Amami-san recommended. I like cookies, but the crumbs falling everywhere are a slight downside.
ââŠHehe~â
As I ate carefully to avoid spilling, I noticed Amami-san watching me with a big grin.
âUh⊠Amami-san?â
âOh, sorry! I just thought you look cute when youâre eating, Maehara-kun.â
âC-CuteâŠ?â
That unexpected comment made my heart skip a beat.
My mouthâs kinda small, so I sometimes eat stuff like this cookie in a little animal-like way, but no oneâs ever called it cute before.
Suddenly embarrassed, my cheeks started heating up.
âOh, youâre blushing! You really are cute, Maehara-kun.â
âN-No, uhâŠâ
Not sure how to react, I instinctively looked to Asanagi for help.
ââŠHey, Yuu. Enough with the munchingâletâs get to the point. Iâm here for that too, yâknow.â
âOh, yeah, right. Sorry, Maehara-kun. I got carried away again.â
âNo, uh, itâs fine.â
Thanks to Asanagi bailing me out, we got back on track, though for some reason sheâs pouting now.
âIdiot.
I thought I saw Asanagiâs lips move like that, but did I do something wrong?
âSorry again, but letâs start over⊠Maehara-kun, Iâm really sorry about last time. You were having fun with your friend, and I was so insensitive.â
âNo, Iâm the one whoâs sorry about that.â
I bowed too, explaining to Amami-san why I acted that way last week, recalling my feelings.
How I shrink back and overthink when Iâm with a big group, how I got annoyed when my fun time with my friend got interruptedâI laid out what I felt honestly.
Amami-san listened silently the whole time, taking me seriously. It was embarrassing, but I figured I should say it.
ââŠI think, for me, that time with my friend was really fun and important. Itâd been ages since I went somewhere like that, messing around and having fun like a student. Probably the same for that friend too.â
Asanagiâs a regular there, but since that âfriendâ is her and thatâs a secret for now, I fudged that part a bit.
ââŠI get it. So, Maehara-kun, you really love that friend, huh?â
â!? Uh, no⊠I meanâŠâ
â? Maehara-kun, whatâs wrong?â
âN-No, nothing⊠I guess you could see it that way⊠As a friend, theyâre definitely important, but âloveâ is⊠uh, I dunno.â
Asanagiâs a precious friend for sure, but with her sitting right here, I stumbled over my words.
Too embarrassed to even glance at Asanagi.
What kind of face is she making while listening to this?
âAnyway, Iâve reflected on last week and wanna let it go. So Iâd be happy if you did too, Amami-san.â
âYeah, thanks! Then, as a sign weâre cool, letâs shake hands.â
âOh, sure.â
I took her offered hand, and we shook.
I was worried my palms were sweaty from nerves, but Amami-san didnât careâshe gripped tight and swung my hand up and down.
âGlad it worked out, Yuu.â
âYeah, thanks, Umi! I made up with Maehara-kun because of you.â
âYouâre welcome.â
For a sec, I wasnât sure how itâd turn out, but this should settle last weekâs mess.
Thereâll probably be weird rumors about me and Amami-san for a while, but if I ignore them, theyâll die down eventually.
The classâs popular girl and the classâs loner. We can just go back to our separate worlds, no need to cross paths again.
âAlright then. Yuu, since weâre done talking, letâs head home. Staying too longâll bother Maehara-kun.â
âYeah. Oh, but since we made up, Iâve got one more little request for Maehara-kun. Is that okay?â
âWell, sure, I donât mind⊠What is it?â
âUm, well, uhâŠâ
As we finished cleaning up to leave, Amami-san turned to face me.
âMaehara-kun, if you donât like it, you can totally say no.â
âGot it, but⊠what?â
âUh⊠wellâŠâ
Fidgeting a bit, Amami-san continued.
âMaehara-kun, if itâs okay with you, would you be my friend?â
âââŠââ
Her sudden offer left meâand Asanagi beside herâspeechless.
I thought weâd found a clean resolution, but looks like my connection with Amami-sanâs gonna stick around a bit longer.
And then, the next day. Amami-san, now apparently my friend, wasted no time jumping in.
âOh, Maki-kun! Morning! Nice weather again today, huh?â
âMorning⊠Yeah, it is.â
âHmph~ You donât have to be so formal, Maki-kun.â
Amami-san pouted adorably, but sadly, I wasnât in a state to enjoy it.
The classâs stares were stinging.
âH-Hey, Yuu-chin⊠Just checking, but Maki-kun isnâtâŠâ
âHuh? Oh, come on, Nina-chi. Of course itâs Maehara-kun! Maehara Maki-kun. Wait, did you not know his name?â
âHuh? N-No, I knew it⊠I think.â
Itâs fine that Nitta-san didnât know my name, but she mustâve been shocked about me and Amami-san.
Yesterday it was âMaehara-kun,â and now itâs âMaki-kun.â
Some people are bound to wonder what happened.
âYouâve gotten pretty close to him, huh, Yuu-chin? âŠDid something happen?â
âYup! I made up with Maki-kun, and weâre friends now. Right, Maki-kun?â
Whoosh.
Amami-sanâs sunny smile sent the whole classroom into a frenzy. Yesterday was bad, but todayâs reaction topped it.
âNo way, seriously?
âThat guy and Amami-sanâŠ?
âWhat if heâs got some weird dirt on her?
âDirt? Like what?
âNo clue, butâŠ
Theyâre saying whatever they want, but Iâve given up on that.
Bottom line: yesterday, I became friends with Amami-san. Hence the first-name basis.
âI donât know what everyone else thinks, but I think Maki-kunâs a really good guy. Heâs usually quiet, but heâs got his own opinions and can speak up. Plus, heâs smart⊠To me, heâs kinda like Umi, but a boy.â
Our ways of thinking might be similar, so in that sense maybe Iâm like Asanagi, but thatâs overstating it.
âRight, Umi? You get it, donât you? You were with us yesterday.â
âEven as your best friend, I donât always get everything⊠maybe.â
âHuh? Really? I think if Umi and Maki-kun became friends, youâd totally hit it off. You shouldâve swapped numbers.â
âWell, Iâm a girl too⊠Gotta be careful about that stuff.â
Weâre way past swappingâwe text all the timeâbut since Amami-san doesnât know, weâve gotta dodge it smoothly.
Still, Amami-san saw me and Asanagi that way? We barely talked in front of her. She might be sharper than I thought.
â! Oh, Maki-kun, are you alone for lunch today?â
âWell, yeah. Always am, and I planned to be.â
âI see. Then how about we eat lunch together today?â
âT-Together!?
Amami-sanâs words sent the classroom into an even bigger uproar.
âW-Wait, Yuuâthatâs a bit much, donât you thinkâŠâ
âIs it? Maki-kun said heâs not great with big groups, so I thought just the two of us would be better. Is that no good?â
âWell, itâs not absolutely no good, but⊠You think so too, right, Maehara-kun?â
âY-Yeah. Thatâd be kinda nerve-wracking.â
I could handle Asanagi, but Amami-sanâs basically the classâno, the gradeâsâidol at this point.
Eating lunch alone with her? Just thinking about it makes me nervous.
âSee, Maehara-kun says so too.â
âHmm, oh! Then how about with Umi too? Itâd be three of us, but you were with Maki-kun yesterday, Umi. Right, Maki-kun? Thatâs fine, yeah?â
âUh, umâŠâ
Going from two to three with Asanagi added doesnât exactly solve the issue.
But if I flat-out refuse here, it might look like Iâm getting cocky and tank my rep with the class. Itâs unfair, but no helping it.
ââŠAlright. Then today itâs me, Asanagi-san, and Amami-san, the three of us.â
âReally? Yay!â
Amami-san threw her arms up in innocent excitement at my okay.
Eating with me isnât exactly thrilling, so is she just nice, or maybe a little odd?
âThanks, Maki-kun! Hey, Umi, Maki-kun said yes!â
âYeah, yeah, good for you⊠Sorry, Maehara-kun. Thanks for putting up with our princessâs whims.â
âNo, itâs not a problem for me or anything.â
It happened by chance, but in the end, I leaned on Asanagi again.
âWe help each other out when weâre stuckââthatâs me and Asanagiâs deal, but I still wanted to handle this one solo if I could.
After making the plan and heading back to our seats, I quickly sent Asanagi a sneaky message.
(Maehara: Sorry, Asanagi. I couldnât handle it alone.)
(Asanagi: Canât be helped this time. Our friendship didnât get exposed, so just move on.)
(Maehara: Yeah. Thanks, Asanagi. Iâm glad you said that.)
(Asanagi: Youâre welcome. Friends are for helping out in times like this.)
(Asanagi: So)
(Maehara: So?)
(Asanagi: Oops, typo. Nothing.)
(Maehara: Oh? Okay then.)
I cut the chat there and looked up at Asanagi in the seat ahead.
Staring at her phone, oblivious to my gaze, her profile seemed just a tiny bit redder than usual.
And just like that, lunchtime rolled around.
First to fourth period, including breaksâabout four hours or so. Timeâs supposed to be fair, but days like this fly by way too fast.
âPhew, morning classes are finally over. Usually it feels quicker⊠Hey, Umi, donât you think so too?â
âNah, if anything, I feel the oppositeâŠâ
Our eyes met briefly. Looks like Asanagi was thinking about whatâs coming up too.
And naturally, the other classmates too.
I wish theyâd just leave already, but even the ones who usually vanish from the classroom right away seem unusually curious about us today.
âJeez⊠Itâs just eating lunch with a classmate, thatâs all⊠Oh, and Nina, put your phone away right now.â
ââŠY-Yes, maâam.â
The moment Asanagi spoke up, Nitta-sanâs phone slipped out from the sleeve of her uniform at the back seat. Sheâs someone who never lets her guard downâimpressive, really.
âHaha⊠Looks like we wonât be able to eat in peace in the classroom like this. Itâs a bit chilly, but how about we eat outside today?â
âYeah. If we find a sunny spot, it might actually be perfect. Maehara-kun, you okay with that?â
âSure. I donât mind either way.â
And so, the three of us left the classroom to scout for a decent spot.
âUmi, where should we go? I usually eat in the classroom or the cafeteria, so Iâm kinda clueless about this stuff.â
âNormally, the courtyardâs the obvious pick, but itâs pretty crowded there. We donât mind, but⊠Maehara-kun, you good with that?â
Sure, itâs busy, but not so packed that itâs unbearable. The benches might be taken, but thereâs still plenty of space to sit if theyâre fine with it.
So if the two of them say itâs okay, Iâd go along with it too.
âHey, arenât those two girls over there first-years?
âLooks like it. Man, theyâre both insanely cute. Especially that blonde one.
âAnd whatâs with that dull guy trailing behind? Whatâs the deal?
Iâd love to know that myself, but either way, just walking down the hall means overhearing this kind of chatter nonstop.
Eating my lunch in the middle of that? No way itâd taste good.
âHey, if you two donât mind, I was thinkingâŠâ
âHm?â
âWhatâs up?â
I called out to the two of them as they discussed what to do near the courtyard.
This was my moment to step up.
ââWow, youâre right. A place like this, and not a single person around?â
âGreat sunlight, no tables, but thereâs a bench⊠Pretty nice spot, huh?â
âGlad you think so.â
The place Iâd brought them to was a smoking area for staff, tucked beside the faculty buildingâhome to the staff room and principalâs officeâon the south side of the school grounds.
Apparently, a few years back, this spot used to be a hangout for teachers enjoying a smoke during lunch, but with recent trends, the entire campus went no-smoking. As a result, the space was left abandoned, unused.
I cleaned off the dusty bench to make it usable. Compared to the courtyard with its neat flowers and trees, itâs cramped and overgrown with weeds, but itâs free of noiseâperfect for a student like me to just zone out.
âItâs the only place I could think of⊠Is it no good?â
âNo way, itâs great! Thanks, Maki-kun. Come on, Umi, say thank you too.â
âYuu, donât boss me around⊠But yeah, thanks.â
We lined up on the bench and spread out our lunches.
âOh, Maki-kun, your tamagoyaki looks delicious. Wanna trade for my sausage?â
âUh, sure, I donât mind⊠It might not suit your taste, though.â
âItâs fine, totally fine. âŠWait, Maki-kun, did you make that bento yourself?â
âSometimes. My parents are busy with work, so I do it when Iâve got time.â
Amami-san seemed surprised, but itâs not that big a deal. With leftovers from last nightâs dinner or prepped side dishes from the weekend, waking up a bit early makes it simple enough.
I slack off sometimes, but living with just Mom means Iâve gotta put in some effort.
âUmi, what do we do? Weâre girls, and Maki-kunâs got more girly skills than us!â
âDonât lump me in with you on that⊠Though yeah, heâs definitely beating us.â
They probably leave chores to their parents, so itâs understandable. I wasnât good at it either at firstâcooking, laundry, I Googled everything like crazy.
âWow, this tamagoyakiâs amazing. Sweet and saltyâitâd go great with rice!â
âUh⊠Maehara-kun, can I have some too?â
âSure, go ahead.â
The moment Asanagi popped the other piece in her mouth, her eyes blinked in surprise.
ââŠSo? How is it?â
ââŠUnfair.â
Itâs pretty basicâjust a splash of store-bought white dashi and a pinch of sugar when fryingâbut Iâm glad they both liked it.
Why Asanagiâs verdict was âunfair,â Iâm not sure, but Iâll take it as a compliment for now.
Trading side dishes sparked a full-on cooking chat.
Iâd been stressing over what to talk about while eating with Amami-san, so landing on a safe topic like cooking was a relief.
âWhoa, Maki-kun, you can make sweets too? I already got ânot-your-average-guyâ vibes from the tamagoyaki, but⊠ugh, youâre this overwhelming?â
âNo, itâs not like I can do anything amazingâŠâ
Cost-wise, buyingâs better, but I donât like leaving the house on weekends, and going to a sweets shop alone as a guy feels awkward. When Iâm craving something sweet, making itâs a solid option. Plus, Iâve got time to burn.
âSo, whatâs the tastiest dessert youâve made lately?â
âUh⊠maybe the soufflĂ© pancakes with just eggs and bananasâŠâ
âT-The soufflĂ© pancakes with just eggs and bananasâŠ!?â
Amami-san parroted it back, trembling with shock.
âH-Hey, Umi, I blacked out for a secâwhat did Maki-kun just say?â
âYuu, pull yourself together. The damage isnât that deep yet.â
They stared at me in disbelief. Personally, I donât think itâs that impressive.
âItâs not that hard. I just follow online videos or recipe sitesâsimple steps, thatâs all.â
âBoo, Maki-kun, donât say it like itâs nothing! Some peopleâlike meâmess up even when they follow recipes perfectly, yâknow? Right, Umi?â
âYuuâs got a special âturn-sugar-into-dark-matterâ alchemy talent, after all.â
âHey, thatâs mean, Umi! Like youâre any betterâdonât think Iâve forgotten that charcoal-choco you made for Valentineâs last year!â
âAt least tack âcookieâ onto the end of âcharcoal,â you dimwit.â
Seems neither of them shines in the cooking department. So Asanagiâs just an eater, huh?
âOh, about Valentineâsâit was just friend-choco we made for ourselves, not for anyone else, okay?â
âRight, you two went to an all-girls school, didnât you?â
Their old school was the top elite girlsâ academy in the regionâwealthy families, top students, and an integrated system from elementary to high school. Most students would naturally move up to the high school part, soâŠ
âŠNo, letâs not overthink it. Iâm in a similar boat, anyway.
âMan, Iâm jealous~ I love sweets so much, and hearing this makes me wanna try Maki-kunâs stuff~⊠Hauu, pancakesâŠâ
âIf you want them that bad, I could make someâŠâ
âHuh? Really? Youâll make them? Yay~!â
Amami-sanâs face lit up like a blooming flower, throwing her arms up in joy.
Itâs cheapâ500 yen covers toppings and all, plenty tasty and fillingâbut itâs nowhere near store-bought quality. Still, seeing her this happy makes me feel kinda itchy.
âThen weâve gotta visit Maki-kunâs place again. Todayâs outâIâve got other plansâbut another day⊠Oh, how about this Friday? Iâm free then!â
Amami-san jumped to lock in a date, but thatâs a bit of a problem for me.
âFridayâŠâ
I donât have firm plans yet, but Fridays are basically reserved for hanging out with Asanagi.
Well, thatâs just my personal ruleâif our schedules (mostly Asanagiâs) donât align, skipping it isnât a big deal.
âŠOr so it should be.
ââŠUh, sorry. That dayâwell, Fridays in generalâare kinda tough for me.â
âHuh? Really?â
âYeah. Other days are fine, but Iâd like to keep that one openâŠâ
Saying it like this makes it sound like both me and Asanagi are busy, which could tip Amami-san off if Iâm not careful.
To keep our secret safe, I should slot Amami-san in this week and skip Asanagi instead. Thatâs the smarter move.
Asanagiâd probably turn down an invite in the same situation, right?
âOh, itâs not like Iâve got specific plans or anything. Itâs just, with my noisy mom out at work, I usually like to laze around aloneâŠâ
But when it comes to that specific day, Iâd rather prioritize Asanagi.
When sheâs worn out from her usual social stuff, I want to be there, ready to hang out.
As a âfriendâ different from Amami-san, thatâs how I want it to beâor at least, how I feel.
âSo, Iâd appreciate it if we could do another day⊠Is that okay?â
âOh, totally fine with me! I mean, Iâm the one begging here, so I should fit your schedule. Right, Umi? How about we plan something with Maki-kun for next week? Letâs all go together!â
âHuh? Uh, I meanâŠâ
Her reluctance is probably an act. Honestly, Iâd be in trouble if Asanagi didnât come.
ââŠFine, whatever. Guess a chaperoneâs needed. Iâm in.â
âHehe, thanks, Umi! Then itâs settled!â
We nailed down a meetup for mid-next week. This kind of momentum must be how Amami-san connects with so many people.
âOh, itâs already this late⊠Umi, whatâs fifth period again?â
âUh, oh, PE. Weâve got changing, so weâd better head out soon.â
âNo way! Maki-kun, sorry, weâve gotta go!â
âOh, uh, sure. See you both off then.â
âYep, see ya~!â
âLater.â
After waving them off, I sat back down on the bench alone.
Right then, my phone buzzed in my pocket. A message from Asanagi.
(Asanagi: Idiot. You couldâve hung out with Yuu anyway.)
(Maehara: Sorry for being an idiot. But who I hang out with is my choice, right?)
(Asanagi: True. But you really wanna hang out with me that* bad?)*
(Maehara: Nah, not really.)
(Asanagi: Liar. Just admit it. You canât live without me, right? You need me, donât you?)
(Maehara: Huh? Donât need you. Idiot.)
(Asanagi: The one calling someone an idiot is the real idiot. Dumbass.)
(Maehara: Shut up, idiot. Go change already.)
This was heading toward a pointless argument, so I shoved my phone back in my pocket.
That Asanagi, calling me an idiot left and right. Sheâd better watch out next time we hang out.
Lately, Asanagiâs been coming over every week, but I wonder if sheâs managing okay with her other friends. It hit me out of nowhere.
Fridaysâsince Saturdayâs off, itâs gotta be a popular day for plans compared to, say, Tuesday or Wednesday. Plenty of classmates probably make arrangements then too.
Itâs weird for a guy like me to act all know-it-all, but hanging out and building connections with lots of people has more perks than not, I think.
High school class reshuffles, college, the working worldâweâll keep getting forced into new groups. Having lots of ties makes those transitions smoother. Itâs obvious from elementary to middle school, or middle to high schoolânewbies stick with their old crowd at first, then gradually mix with others, and bonds shift over time.
Anyway, it might be meddling, but Iâm kinda worried about Asanagi.
I keep weekends open in case she drops by, so even if she came every week, itâd be fine by me.
She seems to enjoy herself, and coming weekly means she probably finds it comfy here. As the host⊠well, Iâm happy about that, I guess.
ââŠWhat? Whatâs up? Youâre staring at me.â
Asanagi noticed my gaze and tilted her head. Sheâs got fries in her right hand, a controller in her leftâtotal slob modeâbut since sheâs naturally pretty, it somehow still looks good. Annoying.
âOh, I get it. Youâre smitten âcause Iâm so cute, right? In that case, how about going easy on meââ
âNope, not happening.â
âGah! You jerk, you pulled that trick again! Stop hiding in the shadowsâcome out and fight me fair and square!â
âYou should learn how to fight better⊠Wait, no, thatâs not it. I was actually a little worried.â
âWorried about what? Unlike you, Iâm not packing on pounds.â
ââŠMy weight gainâs beside the point.â
Thinking alone wasnât getting me anywhere, so I decided to tell Asanagi my concerns.
Basically, I wanted to say, âShouldnât you hang out with other people more?â Her face soured the moment she heard it.
âWhat? You hate hanging out with me that much? Tired of me, so Iâm disposable now?â
âDisposable? No way. Having you around, IâŠâ
ââŠYou, what?â
âUhâŠâ
I almost let my real feelings slip and clammed up, but Asanagiâsharp as everâgrinned smugly.
âOhh~? Hmm~?â
âWhat?â
âNothing~ Just wondering what Maehara was about to say. âHaving you around, IâŠââgo on, Maehara-kun, finish that thought.â
ââŠIâŠâ
âYes? IâŠ?â
ââŠGotcha.â
While Asanagi was distracted by me, I turned her cute game avatar into Swiss cheese with a submachine gun.
âHey! You hit me while I wasnât looking, you coward!â
âNo such thing as cowardice on the battlefield.â
I forcibly dodged the topic, and we dove back into the game.
Asanagiâs skills have leveled up a ton since before. Turns out sheâs been sneaking her brotherâs console for practice.
That explains why lately our chats and texts are full of gaming jargon. Barely a year in, and sheâs already a legit gamer geek.
âAnyway, thanks for worrying about me, I guess.â
ââŠSorry for fretting over dumb stuff.â
âNah. I get where youâre coming from. I have been crashing here a lot lately. If Iâm too obvious, Yuuâll catch on, so Iâll tone it down a bit. So, what should we eat next week? Iâve been eyeing that mixed modanyaki~â
âHuh? Did you even hear me?â
I feel like she sidestepped it, but knowing Asanagi, sheâs probably got it figured out.
âOh! Right. That romcom manga you lent meâitâs actually pretty good. The protag and heroines are all adorable.â
âRight? I found the final volume on early sale yesterday. Wanna read it?â
âSeriously? Lead with that! Where is it? Your room? Let me see!â
âFine, but I havenât read it yetâŠâ
âThen weâll read it together! Come on, quit munching on those soggy fries and letâs go to your room!â
âYouâre the one who ordered themâŠâ
So we paused the game and headed to my room to read manga.
With my mom in editing, my shelves are packed with manga, light novels, and more. When weâre tired of gaming or not quite in the mood, we sometimes flop around in here reading together.
âMaehara, can I sit next to you?â
âSure, go ahead.â
âCool.â
We sat side by side on the bed and started on the manga weâd been after.
ââŠMaehara, next page.â
âGot it.â
I flipped pages slowly, matching Asanagiâs pace.
ââŠI wasnât sure how itâd end, but a proper happy endingâs nice, huh?â
âYeah. Guess the classics are the best.â
Both me and Asanagi are the type to dive deep into fave works or trending stuffâanalyzing lines, foreshadowing, the nitty-gritty.
She says she talks manga and movies with Amami-san and other classmates too, but itâs usually broad stuff like âthe visuals were coolâ or âthe music was greatâânever hitting the details Asanagi really wants to unpack.
Thatâs part of why she sees me as more of a âcomrade,â apparently.
âPhew~ So good. I kinda wanna reread from the start⊠Maehara, whereâs volume one?â
âMiddle of the shelf. Guess Iâll read something else then.â
After that, we each sprawled on the bed or carpet, leaning against the wall, quietly reading our own picks.

During that time, weâre silentâno chit-chat. But itâs never awkward.
Thatâs just how me and Asanagi roll.
âWhew, got lost in that for a whileâŠâ
Taking a break at a good spot, I realized over two hours had passed.
Reading or gaming always eats up time like thisâtrouble is, it happens too often.
âGuess Iâll make some coffee to wake up⊠Asanagi, Iâm brewing someâwant anyââ
I turned to Asanagi, sprawled on my bed engrossed in her manga, and noticed.
âKaa~âŠâ
âOh, sheâs out coldâŠâ
Peeking at her face, sheâd clearly dozed off mid-read, mouth slack with a bonus snore.
Sleepingâs fine, but sheâs way too relaxed. This is still a teenage guyâs room, yâknow.
ââŠNgaaâŠâ
âJeez, snoring like thatâso unladylikeâŠâ
Still, being around her makes even that kinda endearing. Weird how that works.
âYawn⊠Guess Iâll lie down too.â
Watching Asanagiâs sleeping face mustâve made me drowsyâmy eyelids got heavy.
Checking my phone, itâs just before 9 PM. Usually, she heads home in about an hour, so letting her sleep a bit longerâs fine.
With Asanagi snug under my blanket looking comfy, I set an alarm and grabbed a cushion to nap on the floor nearby.
I wanted to stretch out this cozy, lazy night just a little more.
That turned out to be my downfall this time.
âWake up, Maki. Get up already.
âNnhâŠ?â
I was drifting in a pleasant haze when a voice echoed in my foggy head.
The alarm hasnât gone off yet, so not much time shouldâve passed. Maybe Asanagi woke up first? If so, I should at least see her to the doorâ
ââMaki, Maki. Hey, I said wake up already.â
âNnh⊠Sorry, Asanagi⊠I got sleepy tooâŠâ
ââOhh, so that girlâs Asanagi-san, huh?â
ââŠHuh?â
That instant, a chill shot through me. Oh no. This canât beâŠ
Rolling over, I saw Asanagi still lying there, peacefully snoring away.
Yet someone had called meâwhich meantâ
Slowly turning my gaze forwardâŠ
âGot off work early for once and came home⊠and youâve got a girl in your room? Care to explain?â
âMom⊠Y-YesâŠâ
Standing there, arms crossed and looming over me, was my momâwho wasnât supposed to be back from work.
Itâs my fault for letting my guard down, but getting caught by Mom before Amami-san was not part of the plan.
âSorry, Asanagi. I meant to wake you when it was timeâŠâ
âNah~⊠We totally crashed, huh? If your mom hadnât woken us, we mightâve slept âtil morning.â
She mustâve been super comfyâwhen Mom woke us, it was already past ă at night.
Asanagiâs house doesnât have a strict curfew, and she usually lets them know if sheâll be late, but this hour was pushing it way too far.
âŠI messed up big time.
ââYes, yes. They were reading manga together and fell asleep as is⊠Yes, yes. Really, my kid⊠Oh, no, no, itâs not your daughterâs faultâitâs entirely my idiot sonâsââ
While me and Asanagi sat seiza-style in the living room, Mom was on the phone with Asanagiâs parents, clearly groveling.
So yeah, both Mom and Asanagiâs folks now know the âfriendâ I hang out with on weekends is a girl from my class.
Iâd planned to introduce her to Mom someday, but not like thisâclose to the worst way possible.
âSorry for the wait, Umi-chan. I got permission from your mom, so since itâs late, stay over tonight, okay?â
âHuh? B-But thatâs too much trouble⊠And, uh, Maehâer, Maki-kunâs here tooâŠâ
For now, itâs settled that sheâll sleep over, but even as friends, Iâm a guy and sheâs a girl. Thatâs obviously something to consider.
âItâs fine. Itâs a twenty- or thirty-minute walk, and I canât let a girl walk alone at night. My sonâs too unreliable to escort you⊠Of course, Iâll make sure Maki doesnât lay a finger on you, so you can rest easy on that.â
âI wouldnât do that⊠And when we were napping, we were on the bed and floor, totally separate.â
âOh? You say that, but didnât you sneakily peek at Umi-chanâs sleeping face and poke her cheeks or something?â
ââŠNo way! Asanagi and I arenât like that⊠Come on, trust your own kid a little!â
âI did, and look where that got us?â
ââŠSorry about that.â
I bowed my head to Mom honestly.
As for Asanagi, I did think her sleeping face was cute for a split second, but I didnât touch her or feel anything shady. âŠAt least, I shouldnât have.
âStill, I never imagined youâd get close to such a cute girl. Every day itâs just games, games, gamesâno hint of this at all. Maki, how long have you been bringing Umi-chan over?â
âYour wording⊠Uh, weâve been hanging out here for about a month and a half, I guess.â
Itâs not exactly âbringing her over,â but for now, Iâll take all the blame.
âI see. Sometimes Iâd come home exhausted from an all-nighter and think the room smelled weirdly like air freshener⊠Never guessed it was for this.â
Iâd made up excuses about takeout odors, but really, it was to cover Asanagiâs traces.
Perfume or makeup or somethingâshe leaves a faint sweet scent in the living room after sheâs gone, nothing like our usual. Momâs sensitive to smells, so Iâd been masking it.
In the end, one slip-up from me, and it all went down the drain.
âAnyway, Iâve got proper permission, so Umi-chan, stay here tonight. Head home tomorrow morning and apologize to your mom properly then. Got it?â
âAsanagi, trust Mom on this, okay? Iâll follow her rules while youâre here too.â
And if theyâll let me, Iâll go to Asanagiâs place myself to apologize in person.
âUh⊠You really wonât do anything, right?â
âOf course not! What do you take me for?â
âYeah, true. If you had that kinda guts, Iâd question if weâd even be friends⊠Okay.â
She hesitated a bit but finally nodded, seemingly convinced.
âGot it. Then Iâll be in your care tonight.â
âGreat, glad to have you, Umi-chan. Your uniformâll wrinkle, so change into my pajamas. Oh, but first, a bath. After, us girls can chat a bit⊠Maki, youâback to your room.â
âI know, I know.â
Sheâs mad, but sheâs awfully soft on Asanagi. And despite just getting off work, Momâs weirdly hyped up.
Well, Iâve never brought friends home or been invited anywhere, so sheâs probably thrilled in her own mom-way.
Obviously, Asanagi being gorgeous helps too.
âIâll head to my room like you said, but whereâs Asanagi sleeping? Weâve got the sofa, but we canât treat a guest like thatâŠâ
We donât have spare bedding or a guest roomâliving roomâs about it for sleeping spots.
âHuh? Iâm fine with the sofaâŠâ
âNo way, Umi-chan. The sofaâs hard on your body and bad for sleep.â
âBut thenâŠâ
Asanagi glanced at me.
Weâve got two bedsâmine and Momâs. Momâll take hers, so that leavesâ
âGot it. Iâll sleep on the sofa tonight, Asanagi. Use my bed. After your bath, weâll swap spots.â
âHuh? But then youâŠâ
âI can sleep like a rock on the floor, so the sofaâs a breeze. Itâs my house, but youâd wanna sleep well too, right?â
âWell, yeah, but⊠You sure?â
âYeah. The beddingâs freshly aired out, so itâs not too grimy.â
Honestly, after seeing her sleep so cozily under my blanket, I couldnât not offer.
âMakiâs saying itâs fine, so donât hold back, okay, Umi-chan?â
ââŠAlright. Then Iâll take you up on it.â
So just for tonight, me and Asanagiâs weekend stretched a bit longer.
With Asanagi off to bathe, Mom shooed me to my room, where I sat on my bed, hugging my knees, zoning out.
âAsanagi, sleeping over at my placeâŠâ
Itâs not weird for friends to crash at someoneâs house, chatting or gaming all nightâbut thatâs same-sex stuff. Guy and girl? Even couples might avoid it. Especially as first-year high schoolers.
Right now, Iâve got my door shut and headphones blasting musicâtotal soundproof modeâso Iâve got no clue whatâs happening outside.
I wanted a bath too, but Mom banned me. She was going on about âusing Umi-chanâs leftover bathwaterââ like Iâd ever do that.
âAsanagiâsâŠâ
A hazy image of her beyond the steam flickered in my mindâ
ââŠNo, no, what am I, an idiot?â
I shook off the dumb thought and cranked the headphone volume higher.
Itâs some love drama song trending on TV lately. I like this rock band, but their recent stuffâs all about love and friendshipânot as loop-worthy as their old tracks.
âŠA loner like me doesnât get all this talk of love and bonds.
âAsanagiâs just a friend⊠right?â
Even vibing to music or reading my favorite comic, my mind kept drifting to my first-ever friend.
Gaming together, scarfing down junk food thatâs gotta be awful for us, trading stupid jokesâthe girl who befriended a socially awkward mess like me.
I definitely see Asanagi as a âfriendâ and wanna keep things good with her. I hope she feels the same.
But usually I donât think twice about itâtimes like this force me to notice.
Asanagi Umi is a girl.
Top grades, impeccable manners, as striking as Amami-sanâthe âsecond-cutest girl in class.â
And that girlâs in my house right now, bathing, about to change into pajamas and sleep in my room, in my bedâ
ââŠHuh?â
Thinking that, my heart started racing.
When I peeked at her sleeping earlier, I didnât flinch at allâwhy now?
(Itâs Asanagi, yâknow? Sure, sheâs pretty, but sheâs all prim on the outsideâinside, sheâs the type to snore like an old man with her mouth open and drool everywhere, right?)
Yet here I am, recalling every âgirlyâ moment of hers, getting all flustered by myselfâ
ââHey.â
âWahh!?â
A whisper in my ear jolted me so hard I nearly leapt off the bed.
Turning, there was Asanagi, barely holding back laughter at my pathetic reaction.
âPfft, haha! Geez, I just spooked you a littleâwhyâd you freak out so bad? You just bounced like one of those dollar-store toy frogs!â
âA-Asanagi⊠Knock first, jeez!â
âI didâmultiple times. Youâre blasting music through those headphones, so of course you didnât hear.â
Normally, Iâd catch it even with headphones, but my head was spinning with too many thoughts to notice.
âOh, right. About pajamasâyour momâs didnât fit, so I borrowed your sweats. Sorry.â
âOh, uh, thatâs fine⊠Iâve got a bunch of similar ones in different colors.â
âGood, good. These are all fuzzy and warmâmight grab some for myself next time.â
Sheâd changed into my navy sweatshirt and pants. Theyâre oversized and comfyâmy go-to for lazy days at home.
She said they didnât fit, but Mom and I are about the same height⊠Well, I wonât pry into that.
The baggy sweats hide it now, but⊠Asanagiâs got a decent chest.
âŠThere I go, thinking weird stuff again.
âA-Anyway, Iâll sleep in the living room, so use the bed however you wantââ
âWait a sec.â
âGuh!â
I tried to slip out considerately, but Asanagi grabbed my collar from behind, stopping me.
âW-What?â
âNah, I was napping earlier, and the bath woke me up completely⊠Letâs chat a bit.â
ââŠMom told me to stay out of the same space as you as much as possible.â
âA littleâs fine. Besides, if you try anything, Iâll scream loud enough.â
âIâm not gonna try anything!â
Momâs the type to follow through, so if Asanagi yelledâeven jokinglyâIâd be toast.
âCâmon, Maehara, over here. Sit next to me, itâs fine.â
âThis is my bed to begin withâŠâ
âItâs mine for now⊠Come on, get over here.â
She patted the spot beside her like calling a dog.
âShe doesnât even realize Iâm trying to be considerate⊠Ugh.â
Well, Iâd rather not risk her yelling, so I sat.
Iâm worried Mom might notice, but sheâs bathing now after Asanagi, so ten or fifteen minutes should be safe.

Sitting close enough for our shoulders to brush, I settled next to Asanagi.
âPhew⊠Never thought Iâd end up sleeping over at your place. What a bad guy you are, sneaking a cute girl like me in here.â
âYouâre the one who fell dead asleep. I messed up napping too, but still.â
âFair point. Guess I was way too defenseless for a girl. Iâll own that.â
She chuckled wryly, and a faint citrus scent wafted from her. We use the same shampooâwhy doesnât it smell like this on me?
âHey, Maehara.â
âYeah?â
âWeâre kinda bad kids, huh?â
ââŠYeah.â
Delinquents, really. If this got out to the class somehow, Asanagiâs image would take a hit for sure.
Of course, Amami-san would be majorly disappointed in her too.
âHey, Asanagi, Iâve been thinking for a whileâŠâ
ââŠAbout telling Yuu about us?â
âYeah. Were you thinking it too?â
âA little, in the bath. Itâs about time we hit our limit, right?â
This mess drove it homeâeven if weâre careful, Amami-sanâll figure it out eventually. Sheâs not that oblivious.
Better to apologize before she finds out and we have to grovel. Iâm the one who suggested keeping it secret, so even if it sours things, we could patch it up quick.
âIâll find a chance to tell Yuu soon, so just act normal, Maehara.â
âGot it. Iâll leave it to you then.â
Since weâre hanging out with Amami-san next Wednesday, Iâll prep to apologize then if it comes up.
If she hates me for it and spreads it around class, thatâs my own doing. Gotta live with it.
âAlright, thatâs settled⊠So, what else should we talk about? Itâs a rare chanceâmaybe the classic love tâoh!â
ââŠOhh?â
She totally threw that out on purpose. My drawerâs got no love stories to pull from.
All Iâve got in there are my still-fresh memories with Asanagi.
âJeez⊠Momâs probably done soon, so Iâm gonna sleep.â
âUgh, such a buzzkill. Fine, Iâll let it slide for today.â
âYeah, yeah, thanks.â
Asanagiâs still Asanagiâzero reservations with me, but a friend I can relax with.
That weird tension from earlier? Probably just my imagination.
âOh, wait. Hey, Maehara. One last thing?â
ââŠWhat?â
âGood night, Maehara⊠Hehe, saying it formally feels kinda ticklish, huh?â
ââG-Good night!â
I bolted from Asanagi, dove onto the living room sofaâmy bed for tonightâwrapped myself in a blanket like a caterpillar, and shut my eyes.
(Just for a sec, just a tiny bit, I thought she was super cuteâŠ)
Her shy little smile from moments ago flashed in my head.
ââŠShe can make a face like that too, huh?â
Thanks to Asanagi, sleep wasnât coming anytime soon tonight.
I ended up too wired to sleep that night, but the next thing on the schedule didnât wait for me.
Early Saturday morning, I was heading to Asanagiâs place with her.
âSorry, Maehara. My mom wouldnât budgeâshe insisted on meeting you.â
âNo, itâs fine. Soonerâs better, and I figured Iâd have to visit eventually.â
According to Asanagi, when she called this morning to say she was heading back,
âBring that boy along tooâI wanna talk to him,â her mom had said. So my visitâs by official request from the Asanagi household.
âŠHonestly, itâs a little scary.
ââHere we are. This is my place.â
ââŠWow.â
Down an unfamiliar street, just past a railway crossing, stood Asanagiâs home.
Like sheâd saidâa typical family house. A two-story wooden build in a residential area, with a big yard where a veggie patch grew juicy red cherry tomatoes. Probably her momâs work.
After ringing the intercom and waiting, slipper-clad footsteps approached, and Asanagiâs mom peeked out.
ââŠI-Iâm home.â
âWelcome back, Umi⊠And welcome, Maehara-kun.â
âH-Hi, Iâm Maehara Maki. Nice to meet you.â
âOh, so polite. Iâm Asanagi Soraâreluctant mother to that delinquent over there.â
She smiled gently with a little âufu,â but like Asanagi once showed me, her eyes werenât smiling at all. Sheâs stunningâhard to believe she has a high school daughterâand has a calm vibe.
âŠYeah, I absolutely canât cross this woman. My instincts are screaming it.
âI never dreamed my daughterâs first time staying out all night would be with a boy from class instead of Yuu-chan⊠When your mom called, Maehara-kun, I was floored.â
âUh⊠Iâm really sorry. I meant to wake her, but I was tired too and just conked outâŠâ
âOh, itâs not your fault, Maehara-kun. The blameâs all on my daughter, who fell asleep so carelessly in a boyâs room. Right, Umi?â
âI already said sorry about that yesterday⊠Donât lecture me out hereâsomeone might hear, itâs embarrassing!â
âSaying sorry yesterday doesnât fix it. This time, Maki-kun and Masaki-san were wonderful people, so it turned out fineâbut what if they werenât?â
âW-Well, thatâsâŠâ
Exactly. Thatâs why Sora-sanâs still scolding her now.
Itâs so dead-on that neither me nor Asanagi could argue back.
She never had a curfew because Asanagiâs always been diligent about her social life. Thatâs why Sora-san trusted her.
This time, though, it risked shattering that trust completely.
Mom coming home saved us from disaster yesterday, but if weâd slept through to morning? Itâd have been a mess for sure.
We canât just brush it off with ânothing happened, so itâs fine.â
âListen, Umi, Iâm not saying donât have fun. Just handle your responsibilities and donât make us worry. Got it?â
ââŠYeah. Sorry, Mom. Iâll be super careful from now on.â
ââŠMe too.â
Me and Asanagi bowed to Sora-san in sync.
This time, weâve gotta seriously reflect. Weâre still high school kidsâgotta keep some boundaries.
âGood. Iâve got plenty more to say, but weâll do that inside⊠Come on in, Maehara-kun.â
âY-Yes. Excuse me.â
I swapped into guest slippers and stepped into the Asanagi living room.
Sora-san mustâve been prepping breakfastâtoast, yogurt, and colorful fruits lined the table.
âUmi, what about breakfast? Iâve got some for Maehara-kun too.â
âWe ate at Maeharaâs⊠Guess Iâll just take some fruit. You, Maehara?â
âSame for me then.â
Guided by Sora-san, I sat at the table, facing her, with Asanagi beside me.
ââŠHuh? Whereâs Aniki?â
âRiku was up late doing somethingâheâs probably still asleep. I told him weâd have a guest, so heâll likely stay upstairs.â
âOh⊠Well, canât be helped.â
The Asanagi familyâs fourâparents, Asanagi, and her older brother Riku. Dadâs at work today, apparently.
Iâd hoped to greet her brother too, but that can wait for another time.
âOh, Mom. About Yuuâs place, todayâs stuffâŠâ
âI havenât told the Amami familyâitâs none of their business. Though if Masaki-sanâs call had been thirty minutes later, I mightâve.â
Guess we dodged a bullet there too. Gotta thank Mom again.
âSo, Maehara-kun. Howâd you get close with our Umi? Iâve asked her, but she just says, âItâs none of your business, Mom,â and clams up.â
âM-MomâŠ! M-Maehara, you donât have to say anything, okay?â
âSee? Like that. My daughterâs first boyfriend sheâs brought homeâIâm dying to hear the âhow we metâ story as her mom!â
âHuh? First⊠ever?â
Amami-san must come over a lot, but seems Iâm the first guy friend sheâs brought here.
Since Asanagi was at an all-girls school through middle, that tracks, but hearing âfirstâ outright feels weird.
âS-So what? Thatâs irrelevant too! Maehara, you donât have to entertain this chatty old lady. Here, eat a peachâitâs sweet and yummy.â
âOh, peeling it for him yourself despite being so clumsy? How sweet. I was worried since you rarely bring friends home lately, but youâre full of surprises, Umi. You little sneak~â
âW-Who made it that way?! Ugh, Mom, you idiot!â
âMaehara-kun, take care of Umi from now on, okay? Sheâs a handful, but deep down, sheâs honest and sweet. Oh, how about staying over here next time? I could keep an eye out, so itâd be safe⊠Yep, great idea!â
âAhâahâshut up already! Maehara, I give you permissionâsew her mouth shut!â
âUh, thatâs a bit muchâŠâ
Itâs lively for a morning. I usually eat alone, so this vibeâs kinda nice.
After that, I got stuck between Sora-sanâs prying and Asanagiâs secrecy, struggling but oddly enjoying the atmosphere.
The sleepover incident, including the visit to Asanagiâs, wrapped up peacefully with no major falloutâbut starting the next week, things shifted subtly for me and Asanagi.
âMorning, Umi!â
âSecond time today, as usual, but morning, Yuu. Whatâs up? You look extra happy today.â
âHuh? Whatâs up, she saysâyou know full well~ Itâs that, yâknow, that.â
Amami-san shot me a sneaky wink. Itâs Wednesdayâthe day weâd planned for her to visit my place.
It was right after the incident, so honestly, Iâd have preferred pushing it back a week, but no way I could say that to her. So, as scheduled.
And of course, I had to tell Mom. After the Asanagi fiasco, I promised to report any time Iâd have a girl over.
Naturally, that applies to future hangouts with Asanagi too.
I can still picture Momâs reaction when I told her vividly.
She literally fell off her chair.
âN-Not just Umi-chan, but her best friend too⊠Oh, my son, my shy little boy, turned into some harem protagonist overnightâŠ!â
What a way to talk about your own kid. I explained theyâre just classmates and friends, but she kept nagging me to introduce Amami-san too.
âHuh? Whatâs that? Yuu-chin, you and Asanagi going somewhere again? Let me tag along!â
âSorry, Nina-chi, not this time. Todayâs just me and Umi hanging out. Right?â
âYep, thatâs the deal. Nitta, you know what happens if you tail us, right?â
âY-YesâŠâ
After getting chewed out by Asanagi last time, Nitta-sanâs playing nice.
(Maehara: Think Nitta-sanâs okay?)
(Asanagi: No clue, but Iâll hammer it in at lunch just in case.)
(Maehara: Got it. See you after school then.)
(Asanagi: Yep, got it. Oh, and Iâm looking forward to your homemade sweets too.)
(Maehara: Itâs not a big deal or anythingâŠ)
(Asanagi: What? Picking a fight with me and Yuu, the housework flops?)
(Maehara: Oh, right, my bad.)
(Asanagi: Jerk.)
We traded sneaky texts as usual, and I glanced at Asanagi. Normally, sheâd subtly wave or something to keep it under wraps, butâ
ââŠâŠâ
Since this week started, sheâs been looking away when our eyes meet. Even in passing during class switches, same dealâno nod, nothing.
Texts are normal, so I donât think she hates me, but still.
After school, I got home first and was prepping ingredients when Asanagi showed up with Amami-san.
âHehe, looking forward to today, Maki-kun!â
âY-Yeah, same⊠And, uh, Asanagi-san too.â
âOh, yep. Iâm just this oneâs babysitter today, so donât mind me.â
Our public banterâs still trickyâhow do I play this right?
Especially with Amami-san as the guest today, itâs extra awkward.
Acting distant when weâre close feels gross.
âJeez, Umi, Maki-kunâtoo stiff! Especially you, Umi, youâre friends now, so talk like usual!â
âHuh? N-No, Iâm only friends with you, YuuâIâm more like a friend-of-a-friendââ
âThatâs exactly why you should get closer! Here, both of youâshake hands. Sign of friendship!â
âââŠââ
Weâve held hands before, and sheâs even patted my headâbut whyâs this so tense now?
Me and Asanagi stared at each otherâs hands.
âCome on, both of youâsay ânice to meet youâ!â
ââŠUh, our princess says so, so for nowâŠâ
âY-Yeah, sure.â
With that, I lightly gripped Asanagiâs right hand.
As always, itâs smoothâlike silk. Apparently, Sora-sanâs obsessed with skincare, and Asanagi picked it up, ending up like this naturally.
Meanwhile, my hands are rough from choresâyoung but weatheredâso the contrast is startling.
ââŠAnyway, Iâll cook, so you two sit and watch TV or something.â
âIâd love to help, but me and Umi are useless here⊠Muu, no choice.â
âSame here. Guess weâll behave like Maehara-kun says.â
Leaving Amami-san to Asanagi, I got to cooking.
Itâs nothing fancyâjust the âegg-and-banana soufflĂ© pancakesâ we talked about at lunch the other day.
Not hardâseparate the eggs, whip the whites into a fluffy meringue, mix in mashed banana and yolk, then cook it on a pan.
Sure, thereâs a knack to not overmixing the meringue and banana, but practice makes it second nature.
âAlright, just waiting for it to cook⊠Huh? Whatâre you two up to?â
While prepping coffee to go with the pancakes, I noticed them messing around.
âOh, sorry. Borrowed a game⊠Hey, Umi, thatâs cheating starting out of nowhere!â
âOhh~ No cheating in a deathmatch~ On the battlefield, the distracted get slaughtered~ Gotta understand that~â
Theyâd dug into my gamesâsame versus one me and Asanagi always play.
Asanagiâs ruthless, knowing full well Amami-sanâs a newbie.
I trash her in-game too, so I canât talk, but stillâpretty immature.
âW-Wait, Umi, youâre good! Howâre you landing shots like that?â
âBeen borrowing my brotherâs lately⊠Yes! My win. Come on, sweets are readyâletâs eat before they cool.â
âUmi~âŠ?â
âHaha⊠W-Well, we can play more after eating if you want. I could teach you?â
âReally? Then please, Master!â
âM-Master⊠Uh, l-looking forward to itâŠâ
I figured she wouldnât care for this stuff, but seeing her face while playing, Amami-san might actually get hooked.
If we keep gaming after sweets⊠Iâll be strict about time after last time, but I should probably tell Mom we might run a bit late.
We paused the game to eat the fresh pancakes.
Usually, Iâm sloppier, but for Amami-san and Asanagi, these are my best yet. Fluffy perfectionâextra effort whipping the whites paid off.
I split it three ways and let them dig in first.
âFwah⊠So fluffy⊠A little less sweet, but that makes the banana stand out. Umi, this is crazy, right?â
ââŠYeah, itâs good.â
âItâs about a third the calories of normal ones, so you can pile on butter or syrup guilt-free⊠Want more?â
âYes~!â
ââŠMe too.â
Seems they liked it.
Amami-san beamed happily. Asanagi grumbled a âmmphâ while eating.
Seeing different reactions from people eating my food? Not bad as the cook.
âMaki-kun, uh⊠Mineâs already gone⊠Ehe~â
Amami-san timidly pointed out her empty plateâclean as a whistle.
âI made extra today, so I can whip up more. Seconds?â
âCan I? Then please!â
âAsanagi-san?â
ââŠIâll take some.â
Asanagiâs plate was spotless too, of course.
âGot it. For both of you.â
âOh, Maki-kun. Can I watch up close this time? I wanna try making it at home.â
âYuu, why not just beg your mom to make it? Weâd turn it into a black disc.â
âMuu~ I can do it if Iâm taught right! Right, Maki-kun?â
âWell, if you time it and donât miss the flip cuesâŠâ
ââŠThen Iâll watch too.â
So I ended up cooking sandwiched between Amami-san and Asanagi.
âPour the batter onto a parchment-lined pan to prevent sticking, cover it, and heat for about five minutes⊠Then check how itâs puffing up. Once itâs not raw and fluffy, thatâs the signalâfold it in half.â
âOoh~ Looks easy!â
âRecipes online have tons of versions, so check those if youâre stuck. Generally, sweets work if you stick to amounts and timesâmight char a bit, but not, uhâŠâ
ââŠWhat? Wanna say âdark matterâ or âcharcoalâ? Go ahead.â
âNo, thatâs not⊠Ow!â
Out of Amami-sanâs sight, Asanagi pinched my side hard. Sheâs holding back so it wonât tip her off, but I wasnât mocking themâforgive me already.
We polished off the seconds too, then jumped back to gaming.
âHehe, watch this, Umi. With Maki-kunâs teachings, Iâll make you eat dust this time!â
âPfft, what can that cutesy avatar and gear do? Iâll blast that pretty face off with my heavy arsenal.â
Itâs a mode with free character and gear picksâAmami-sanâs all about looks, while Asanagiâs attack-first, defense-second.
Experience and stats give an edge, so Amami-sanâs gotta skill up to close the gap.
âRight⊠Basics firstâdonât panic when you spot an enemy, donât spray bullets wildly, aim carefully. Fight from high ground or cover where youâve got the advantage⊠Tons more, but start there.â
âGot it.â
I coached Amami-san beside her while she faced Asanagi.
Results came fast.
âStick to basics⊠Aim steady⊠There!â
âAh!â
âYes! First kill off Umi!â
Ten minutes of my tips, and sheâd grasped itâsnagging her first win off Asanagi, whoâd been dominating her.
Asanagiâs gotten good from home practice and our weekends, butâ
That slick move Amami-san pulled off? For a flash, it felt sharper than my usual plays.
She says she barely touches these games, but she might have a natural knack for them.
âHmph⊠T-That was just me slipping up! I wasnât serious!â
âHehe~ Oh? Then Iâll beat serious Umi next time!â
After that, I stopped advising and just watched their matches.
âYou little slipperyâŠ!â
âOver here, Umi-chan! Catch me if you can~!â
âTch, this chickâs for realâŠ!â
The bestie battle heated up more than expected, but after an hour, we called it quits.
They clearly wanted more, but dragging it out too late wasnât an optionâespecially after my recent screw-up.
âMuu, only won three more times after that⊠Kinda frustrating.â
âBeating me at all when I play this much is honestly shocking.â
Asanagiâs rightâgames like this, with high skill ceilings, are brutal for newbies.
Even with my tips, Amami-sanâwhose controller time you can count on one handâtaking wins off Asanagi is kinda wild.
âSee ya, Maki-kun. Letâs hang out again sometime!â
âYeah, sure. See you.â
Iâd rather this be a one-off, but it feels like thereâll be a next time.
âUmi, whatâs wrong? Letâs go!â
âOh⊠Sorry, forgot something. Iâll catch up quickâgo ahead, Yuu.â
âHuh? If itâs lost, Iâll helpââ
âNo, no, itâs fine. I know where it is. Go on, youâve got your shoes onâshoo!â
âOh? Okay then⊠See you!â
Asanagi half-pushed Amami-san out the door.
ââŠGood work, Asanagi.â
âYou too, Maehara.â
Finally, just me and Asanagi alone that day.
ââŠSheesh, that girl. She can do anything.â
âThe game? Yeah, sheâs deft, but that levelâs not a big deal if you justââ
âIt is a big deal. Today was tame, but give her two, three more rounds, and Yuuâll get scary good. Anything she likes, she sucks up fast, and before you know itâŠâ
ââŠAsanagi?â
ââŠOh, sorry, turned into a rant. Sheâs like a talent sponge, yâknow? Sometimes I canât help feeling this way.â
âOh⊠Yeah, I kinda get that.â
Some people, like Amami-san, just get stuff. Studies, sportsâskills or knowledge others grind hours for, they nail in no time.
Good at everything, loved by everyoneâsheâs that girl. Even as Asanagiâs beloved best friend, being next to her all the time might spark a tiny twinge of jealousy now and then.
âSo yeah, Iâd appreciate it if youâd get my struggles as Yuuâs bestie sometimes⊠See ya, Maehara. Today was fun.â
âYeah. Youâre welcome.â
âLater.â
âYeah, later.â
Asanagi had been chipper âtil then, but as she left, her profile looked oddly lonely for a split second. Was that just me?
