Chapter 3 | SkirmishÂ
Having witnessed the great vibe of Class 11âs team firsthand, Iâm even more curious about the showdown between the two teams, but before that, Iâve got my own immediate challenges to tackle.
Thanks to the recent discussion, Iâm set to participate in the class match with softball, but practice hasnât progressed one bit. Even if I wanted to practice on my own, the school fieldâs taken up by the baseball and soccer clubs, and borrowing equipment to practice elsewhere is banned due to concerns about bothering nearby residentsâno park sessions allowed.
So, outside of PE class, thereâs not much I can do.
Thatâs why, during the open time at lunch break, I ended up doing some catch with Nozomu for now.
ââMaki, Iâll start with slow throws, okay? Keep your eyes on the ball, and try not to move your glove too far from in front of you.â
âWhoa⊠like this?â
âYeah, yeah, thatâs itâlooking good. Huh, for someone practically new at this, youâre doing pretty decent, arenât you?â
âOh, much obliged.â
Maybe itâs Nozomuâs solid teaching, but even with the ball thrown from a fair distance, Iâm somehow managing to catch it in my glove.
He says âslow,â but Nozomuâs throws have some weight to themâmy hand buzzes with each catch. Still, the satisfying thwap as the ball lands in the glove doesnât feel half bad.
âBy the way, Nozomu, what position are you playing? Softballâs underhand pitching, but youâre still going for pitcher, right?â
âYup. Itâs been a while since I last played softball, so I need to practice to get the feel back. What about you, Makiâoutfield?â
âYeah. Iâm not cut out for pitcher or catcher, and infield seems tough with all the quick ball handling and teamwork stuff to memorize. So, by process of elimination.â
Itâs not set in stone yet, but Iâll probably end up in right field. Nozomuâs the ace of the baseball club, but the rest of our team should be total beginners at this, so the planâs to put the more athletic guys in left field, where right-handed batters tend to pull the ball.
âSo, what about batting practice? I could help with tee work since it doesnât take much space, but⊠itâs gotta be the batting cages at that arcade, right?â
âYeah. It costs a bit, but itâs perfect for getting used to fast pitches. Umiâs already planning to head there right after school today for practice.â
âMaki doing an after-school arcade date⊠Youâre living a pretty normal teenage life after all, huh.â
âItâs practice, practice. Well, we probably wonât be swinging bats the whole time, so yeah, we might sneak in a little fun.â
The goalâs practice, no doubt, but Umiâs been buzzing with excitement since morning, so Iâll likely end up tagging along for whatever sheâs got in mind.
Itâs been a while since we last played arcade games or tried our luck at prize machines, and⊠oh yeah, maybe snapping a two-shot photo in a purikura booth. Sheâs been obsessively researching the latest photo booth models on her phone, so resistance is probably futileâIâm getting dragged in.
Hit by the double whammy of lunch plus some light exercise, I fought off an fiercer-than-usual wave of drowsiness to survive afternoon classes. As planned, I headed with Umi to our usual game center.
The slightly dim interior and the noisy clamor echoing from all directions.
It feels kinda nostalgic.
âMaki, câmon, over here! Weâve got stuff to do later, so letâs knock out practice first.â
âNo, I mean, practice is the main point⊠Hey, donât run ahead!â
Itâs not a weekend or anythingâjust a regular weekdayâand this is honestly my first time hitting the town with Umi like this. Usually, weekday hangouts are at my place, so for this rare after-school date, even Umiâs voice next to me is bubbling with excitement.
âSpeaking of, are you sure itâs okay not inviting Amami-san? Iâm happy itâs just us two, but sheâs gotta be holding back from hanging out with you, right?â
âI did invite her, but Yuu said sheâs got plans with someone else. Probably basketball practice, Iâd guess? The girls sheâs with seem busy and can only make time on weekdays.â
âHuh. Amami-sanâs really putting in the effort, huh.â
Sheâs likely roped in a coach from her middle school days. Umi and Amami-san went to an all-girls school known for its strong sports programs, so it wouldnât be surprising if sheâs got basketball club friends from back then.
I donât hear much about Umiâs middle school days, but maybe itâs someone she knows too.
While mulling over this and that, I held Umiâs hand and headed to the floor with the pitching machines. The last time we were here was about six months agoâback when Umi was still just my âfriendââso itâs been a while.
Looking back, it feels like thatâs when things between me and Umi started deepening, bit by bit.
âItâs been a while, so letâs start with 100 kph to get the feel back. Try batting 300 yenâs worth, and once youâre used to it, weâll bump it to 120 kph.â
âY-Yes, maâam. Please take care of me, Coach.â
âGood. Iâll stick with you âtil you nail it, so be ready for that⊠Hehe, Maki, Iâm rooting for youâdo your best!â
âYeah. Well, Iâll give it a shot.â
Hoping to impress my girlfriend watching from outside the cage, I put on the safety helmet and stepped into the batterâs box.
Itâs been ages since I last gripped a metal bat, but maybe my body remembersâsurprisingly, the grip feels natural in my hands, and the batâs weight doesnât seem too heavy. Compared to my scrawny days, my bodyâs gotten a bit sturdier, so swinging with some force shouldnât be an issue.
âMaki, keep your eyes on the ball âtil it hits the bat. Donât worry about hitting it forwardâif your formâs solid, itâll naturally fly sharp and clean.â
ââŠGot it.â
Nodding to Umiâs now-familiar advice, I swing the bat. Nozomu taught me the form, so now itâs just about putting it into practice.
âClink.
âOh.â
âHey, it hit!â
Guess all that basic practice paid offâa weak grounder, sure, but it flies toward the machine-side net with decent momentum.
âNice! Keep it upâjust try hitting a little more under the ball!â
âMm.â
Nodding toward Umi, whoâs beaming and cheering me on, I keep swinging at the pitches.
Itâs a slow pace, but all the effort Iâve quietly put in wasnât for nothing. Sure, I whiff or barely nick it sometimes, but when I connect well, the ball stabs into the net above the machine with a solid feel.
âClang, Crack.
ââŠThis might actually be kinda fun.â
Watching the ball soar with a crisp sound, I can feel my spirits lifting higher and higher.
I used to see salarymen swinging bats after work and wonder, Whatâs so fun about that? But now I get itâevery once in a while, itâs a solid stress reliever.
Plus, I feel like Iâve shown Umi a decent side of myself.
Even if Iâm still only hitting slower pitches.
âMaki, good work! Here, fist bump.â
âThanks. Itâs all âcause of your advice, Umi.â
âYouâre welcome. Oh, youâre sweating. Iâll wipe it for youâcome closer.â
âNo, Iâve got a handkerchiefâI can do it myself.â
âI want to do it.â
ââŠOkay. Please, go ahead.â
âVery well.â
Maybe Umiâs thrilled to see my progress with her own eyesâsheâs doting on me even more than usual.
Itâs a weekday, so the place isnât too crowded, but getting too lovey-dovey in the middle of regular hours might draw some awkward stares or comments.
For now⊠looks like no oneâs around, so I breathe a sigh of relief.
âMaki, whatâs next? You look a little tiredâwanna take a break?â
âNah, Iâm moving well right now, so Iâd like to keep going. Plus, the next oneâs the real deal.â
âHmm. Well, even if itâs softball, the perceived speedâs still pretty fast. Alright, letâs ride this momentum and go for 120 kph!â
With that, we shift over to the faster-pitch corner. This one offers 120 kph to 140 kph fastballs and even curveballsâseems popular with folks who regularly play baseball.
Itâs full, so we line up to wait our turn.
âEven just watching from out here, these speeds are as wild as ever⊠Umi, how do you even hit a 120 kph pitch?â
âHmm⊠Like I said earlier, itâs about watching the ball closely, but it mostly comes down to timing, right? You kinda guess the pitcherâs form or the speed theyâll throw at. Since the ballâs fast, you canât just think, Oh, Iâll swing faster.â
âGot itâtiming, huh.â
âYup, timing. Not just for battingâfor everything, really.â
As she says that, Umi sidles right up to me. I just went with my gut back then, but getting this close with Umiâmaybe itâs because the timing worked out so well.
âŠWhether that perfect fit turned us into a cheesy couple, Iâm not sure.
Whoops, veered off-topic thereâback to the main point.
Wanting to study someone elseâs swing, I glance toward a cage where the sharpest cracks are ringing out. Itâs one over from where weâre lined upâwhile others miss here and there, this personâs consistently blasting balls near the âhome runâ board.
âHah! Yah! Take that!â
The shouts and form are a bit quirky, but the basics are rock-solid, and the swingâs got real power.
Impressed by someone with natural talent, I look closerâand realize itâs an incredibly familiar back.
The safety net and helmet threw me off at first, but with each swing, long golden hair spills out from under the helmet, swaying softlyâno mistaking it.
âPhew⊠Haah, tried it on a whim, but that was super fun⊠Oh!â
â! Yuu!â
âAmami-san?â
âHeya, Umiâand Maki-kun too! Hehe, due to some circumstances, I ended up here after all.â
Just as the person ahead of us finishes, we yield our spot to the next in line to sort things out and head over to Amami-san, whoâs giving an awkward smile.
âYuu, why are you here? What about basketball practice?â
âYeah, that was the plan, but the practice spot changed due to some stuff. You know how this arcade has a basketball court and futsal field upstairs? So we figured weâd practice there while having a little fun.â
âSo those two are here with you?â
âYup! Theyâre off somewhere right now, though⊠Oh, speak of the devilâHey, Sanae-chan, Manaka-chan!â
ââŠNitori-san and Houjou-san?â
Turning toward where Amami-sanâs waving, I spot two girls in the distinctive white blazers of Tachibana Girlsâ Academy.
They look surprised to see me and Umi, but unlike before, thereâs no hesitationâjust smiles.
âNo way, Yuu-chan, you didnât tell them we were here too? If Iâd known, Iâd have prepped my heart a bit more.â
âSanae, whatâs that supposed to mean?â
âOh, câmon, itâs a joke. Umi-chan, donât make that face.â
âMaehara-san, hey~ Long time no see~â
âOh, h-hey, Houjou-san. Been a while.â
Itâs been maybe two or three weeks since Umiâs birthday partyâthe last time we met. Both have shorter hair now, but their faces are unmistakable: Nitori-san with her striking round eyes, and Houjou-san with those gentle droopy eyes matching her soft way of talking.
I wondered why theyâre with Amami-san, but one glance at their big sports bags makes it obvious.
âWait, Amami-sanâs practice partnersâare they Nitori-san and Houjou-san?â
âYes, thatâs right. Manaka and I have been in the basketball club since middle school, so Yuu asked us to coach her when weâve got time. Of course, Umi-chan too.â
ââŠOh, I see.â
So the âconnectionsâ Umi mentioned were Nitori-san and the others.
Tachibana Girlsâ basketball team is pretty well-known locally as a powerhouse, so theyâre perfect for getting pointers from.
âHey, since weâre all here, why donât we practice together today? Itâs less hassle for us as coaches too. Oh, but that might ruin your date, huh? Right, Manaka?â
âYeah~ Iâm feeling some silent pressure from Umi-chan over there~â
âN-No, itâs not like that⊠Besides, todayâs about practice anyway.â
Sounding a bit like me from earlier, Umi secretly squeezes my hand tighter.
She canât turn down the offer from two busy powerhouse players sparing time to help, but naturally, she also wants to spend time alone with meâthatâs probably where sheâs at.
Iâm on Umiâs side no matter what, so I could refuse and keep practicing solo with her.
âOkay, got it. If you two say so, maybe Iâll join in too. Itâs not what we planned, but it means more time with you both watching me.â
âUmi, you sure?â
âWell, yeah. Plus, I donât want just Maki showing offâI wanna prove Iâm working hard too.â
âYay! Then itâs settled!â
With Umiâs approval, Amami-san claps her hands loudly, beaming.
Theyâve stuck to separate practice since theyâll be rivals in the class match, but for Amami-san, the urge to do it with everyone probably outweighs that.
âGeez, what a handful.â
Umi sighs like sheâs exasperated, but her gaze on Amami-san is soft, her expression calm.
She totally wanted this too⊠What a stubbornly dishonest girlfriend.
With the four old friends together, I cut my practice short for now, and we head up the escalator to the other floor.
This oneâs free of amusement stuff like prize games or purikuraâjust a space for physical activity. Thereâs billiards, ping-pong, and dart machines youâd see in tournaments, but the main draws are the basketball and futsal courts from earlier.
We pay for five, stepping into the net-enclosed court. Itâs a half-court, but more than spacious enough for five. Balls and shoes are free to use, and the price is reasonableâstudent-friendly.
âAfter stretching and warm-ups, letâs do shooting practice today. Once thatâs done, weâll split by coach and play a two-on-two mini-game.â
â? Coachesâyou mean Nitori-san and Houjou-san each take one?â
âBasically, yeah. I, Nitori, handle Yuu-chan, and Manaka takes Umi-chan. Itâs more efficient that way.â
âMe and Sanae are about the same skill-wise, so thereâs not much difference~â
With that, practice kicks off, splitting into pairs.
I pitch in as ball boy and passer, helping both groups.
âUmi-chan, Yuu-chan, take turns shooting first. Donât worry about form yetâjust go for it.â
At Nitori-sanâs whistleâpulled from who-knows-whereâUmi and Amami-sanâs practice begins.
Starting with shots, their forms are pretty different.
Umi holds the ball firmly with both handsâa classic womenâs basketball shot.
Amami-san, though, just rests her left hand lightlyâa one-handed type.
Neitherâs right or wrong. If it goes in, pick whateverâs comfy.
âUmi-chan, youâre putting too much arm into it~ Relax your shoulders and focus on your lower body~â
âUgh, yeah⊠Sorry, Manaka.â
âYuu-chan, I get the enthusiasm, but youâre mimicking pros too much. Itâs fine since youâre scoring now, but bad habitsâll bite you later.â
âRoger that, Coach Sanae!â
Watching from a bit away, this feels like legit practice. The coachesâNitori-san and Houjou-sanâwere hesitant with Umi and Amami-san until now, but theyâre laying into them hard.
About ten minutes into hands-on, one-on-one coaching, both Umi and Amami-sanâmaybe thanks to some prior experienceâstart cleaning up their shooting posture, and their success rate climbs steadily.
âAlright, good. Donât forget that feel. Now that weâve covered the basics, how about a shoot-off between you two?â
âââŠâŠ!ââ
The moment Nitori-san says âshoot-off,â a sharp tension flickers between Umi and Amami-san, if only for a split second.
âŠThe real dealâs still ahead, but arenât they too aware of each other already?
âAlternate shots from the free-throw line. Miss, and itâs ten push-ups on the spot. Do ten eachâloser with fewer goals does an extra fifty push-ups⊠But, uh, Sanae~, are we really doing this~? Isnât it a bit harsh for them?â
âReally? We always did double that, and theyâll be fine, right? Yuu-chan, Umi-chanâwhat do you say? Up for it?â
ââYes.ââ
Competitive besties like themâsay it like that, and of course this happens.
Nitori-san egging them on on purpose, and Houjou-san pretending to worry but actually fanning the flamesâfigures, since theyâve known them forever.
Me butting in would just ruin the vibe, so Iâll quietly watch how it plays out.
âEhehe.â
âHehe.â
Theyâre smiling outwardly, but⊠itâs kinda scary.
A coin toss puts Amami-san up first for the shoot-off.
âAlright, Iâll sink the first one and put some pressure on Umi~â
âTrying to psych me out already? Just shootâno need for that. We donât have tons of court time left.â
âOka~y⊠Here I go.â
With a small breath and a serious gaze locked on the rim, Amami-san releases her shot.
A clean, upright formâhard to believe sheâs an amateur.
The ball arcs gently, slipping through the netâs center with a satisfying swish, no rim contact.
âYuu-chan, nice shot!â
âNaisu~â
âEhehe, thanks~ Okay, Umiâs turn!â
âI know already.â
Taking the ball from Amami-san, Umi glances my way.
She doesnât seem nervous, but her face looks a tad stiffâmaybe I should say something.
âUh⊠Umi, you got this.â
âYeah, thanks⊠So why are you three staring at us and smirking like that?â
âââNo reason~âââ
âGeez, seriouslyâŠâ
Blushing under the trioâs warm gazes, Umi shoots with the form she was taught⊠It looks good, but it bounces off the rimâs inside and drops outâbad luck.
âAh!â
âUmi-chan missed. Alright, ten push-ups, as promised.â
âMuu⊠I thought it was close too.â
Umi starts her push-ups on the spot, looking frustrated.
Nine shots left, but after Amami-sanâs perfect opener, she canât afford more misses. Too many, and arm fatigue from push-ups could tank her accuracy.
Umiâs rough start smooths out as she regains her rhythm, sinking shots steadily.
The more she shoots, the steadier she getsânow itâs just waiting for Amami-san to slip. But over there? Still flawless.
ââYes! Seven in a row!â
âOoh, nice one, Yuu-chan. That talentâs shining as always.â
âMonster~â
âCâmon, you two, thatâs too much. Iâm just in good form today, thatâs all.â
Amami-san plays it modest, but her shooting alone could pass for a seasoned playerâs.
Her art at last yearâs culture fest blew me away tooâsheâs seriously good at everything. If she were ace at studies, sheâd be perfect, but thatâs a total wash, which might oddly be part of her charm.
Still, my eyes naturally drift to my girlfriend, giving her all in everything she does.
âUmi, looking good. Nail the rest and turn the pressure back on Amami-san.â
âYeah. That Yuuâs on a roll now, but one little slip could throw her off. Hey, Sanae, what if we tie?â
âYouâve both got that âI wanna settle thisâ look. Sorry, thoughâitâs a draw. Time limitâs up, and we canât extend.â
âGuess itâs postponed to the real thing~ Oh, ties mean thirty push-ups each~â
ââŠIsnât that kinda unfair?â
No win, no lossâso split the penalty? Why itâs ten extra push-ups is beyond me.
Eight and nine go down easy for both, leaving one shot each.
The gapâs still one goal, Amami-san ahead.
âAlright, Iâll sink âem all and shove fifty push-ups on Umi!â
âHuh? Weâre besties, so youâll do thirty with me, right? Or are you planning to ditch me solo?â
âT-That kind of mind game⊠Wait, youâve got Maki-kun, so youâre fine! Heâd stick with you for thirty, fifty, even a hundred, right? Right, Maki-kun? Youâre her boyfriend, so thatâs how it is, yeah?â
âPlease donât drag me into this, for realâŠâ
I was just here to tag along for practiceâwhen did I get roped into the showdown?
My arms are still sore from overdoing it at batting earlier⊠Well, I wonât leave Umi hanging, so Iâd join her.
Amami-san flinches a bit at Umiâs light jabâletâs see how this goes.
ââ!â
The ball leaves Amami-sanâs hands, drifting slowly toward the goal.
I think I saw her lips twitch into a âYesââsheâs probably feeling confident.
If this goes in, Amami-san wins without waiting for Umiâs last shotâbut thenâŠ
âThwack.
âââââHuh?ââââ
Something totally unexpected happens, and all four of us freeze in shock at once.
Amami-sanâs shotâlooking like a sure thingâgets knocked off course by another ball flying in from somewhere else.
Naturally, it misses, and both balls bounce hard across the court, rolling toward the net as they lose steam.
âHey, who was that? Weâre still practicing hereâdonât just butt inâŠâ
Nitori-san reacts first. I was so focused on the ball that it took me a second, but apparently someone outside our group chucked a ball at us out of nowhere.
Glancing at the entrance, thereâs a girl in our high school uniform.
ââŠOh, my bad. I was waiting my turn earlier, but you guys were doing such lame stuff, I couldnât help my bad habit.â
Saying that without a hint of remorse is a tanned girl who stands out among a small group of othersâArae Nagisa, someone me and Amami-san have had some recent beef with.
âArae-san? Uh, wait, are you here for self-practice too?â
âSelf-practice? No way. Some friends wanted to move around, so Iâm just tagging along. What, is there a rule saying I canât hit the arcade after school?â
As usual, her hostility toward Amami-san is off the charts.
Her friendsâor so they seemâtry to gently hold her back, but no one in the group seems able to really rein in their leader.
âNot exactly⊠But even if Iâm here, you canât just interrupt practice like that, okay? Itâd be one thing if it were just me, but weâve got girls from another school here today.â
âYuu-chanâs right. I donât know who you are, but this is a public spaceâplease follow basic manners, or itâs a problem.â
âHuh? Oh, that uniform and bag⊠Tachibana Girlsâ, huh. Still playing the goody-two-shoes, I see.â
Does she hate anyone tied to Amami-san? Arae-san glares at Nitori-san, who backed her up, just the same.
âYou twoâwomenâs basketball, right? Must be tough. A powerhouse school with hard practices, and now youâre stuck coaching these losers. If itâs a hassle, you should just say itâs a hassle.â
â!â
The instant Arae-san says that, one of Umiâs eyelids twitches.
I rarely see it, but thatâs a tic she gets when sheâs mad.
âLosers? Umi-chan and Yuu-chan are really goodâtheyâre not losers. Take it back.â
âYeah~ And this has nothing to do with you anyway~â
Nitori-san and Houjou-san counter calmly, but with their friends trashed like that, their tones naturally sharpen.
Same goes for me.
I donât wanna start something here, but⊠this Iâve gotta say.
ââŠArae-san, can I have a sec?â
âHuh? Who are youâAmamiâs boyfriend? If youâre just trying to look cool, back off.â
Her snappy tone grates, but getting mad at every little thing just plays into her game.
I cool my head and need to firmly point out where sheâs wrong.
âNo. Iâm Maehara, from your class. Anyway, Arae-san, no matter how you spin it, youâre in the wrong here. You were waiting, sure, but our timeâs not up yet, so youâve got no right to get annoyed. And whether we suck or not? Thatâs none of your business either.â
ââŠâŠâ
Arae-sanâs sharp glare stabs into me, but I canât back down over something like that.
This girlâs not just dissing Amami-sanâsheâs badmouthing her friends Nitori-san and Houjou-san, and even Umi indirectly.
As a friend and a boyfriend, I canât let that slide.
âAnyway, apologize for what you did. I donât know what youâve got against Amami-san, but youâre the one who interrupted us.â
ââŠItâs not like I only hate her or anything.â
âHuh?â
âUgh, fine, fine. Sorry for interrupting. My bad, wonât happen again⊠There, happy now?â
âT-That half-hearted toneâŠâ
Her flat, emotionless apologyâjust rattling off wordsâleaves even me dumbfounded.
Pointing that out wonât make her reflect, thoughânot the way she is now.
Keeping this up feels pointless, but us backing off here would feel like letting her off the hook, which I canât stomach.
ââMaki-kun, itâs fine now. Thanks for sticking up for us.â
âAmami-san, you sure?â
âYeah. Fighting here wonât get us anywhere⊠Plus, our court timeâs up. Weâd just bother the staff.â
If this were a school classroom, itâd be different, but this is a public space used by other schools and regular folks.
If we got heated and it turned into a real fight⊠itâd be bad for Nitori-san and Houjou-san, whoâre helping us out of kindness.
Amami-san probably wants to avoid that at all costs.
âŠSo, the compromise isâ
âUh, Arae-san. Our timeâs up, so weâll clear out, but weâre not letting this slide or anything.â
Meaning, weâre carrying this overâeven across days.
Whether Arae-san, with her stubborn attitude, will genuinely apologize is anyoneâs guess⊠but weâve gotta at least do this much to feel settled.
âSorry, I kinda decided that on my own⊠Everyone cool with that?â
âYeah. Totally fine with me.â
âIf Yuu-chanâs okay, I am too.â
âMe too~â
Amami-san, Nitori-san, and Houjou-san are on board.
ââŠâŠâ
âUh, Umi?â
ââŠMm.â
Umi seems a bit off, but with everyoneâs okay, letâs call it a day here.
I wanna step away and cool off too.
âThen, weâre outta here.â
âS-See ya, Arae-san. Tomorrow at school, okay?â
ââŠJust get lost already.â
Giving a sidelong glance at Arae-san, whoâs turned away completely, we start cleaning up the equipment.
Iâd been on the sidelines âtil now, but with this, Iâve officially become Arae-sanâs enemy too.
Did I stick my nose in again? Same old pushover meâbut right now, this was all I could think to do.
âŠIf I were smoother, could I have handled it better?
Well, no point dwelling on it now.
ââAlright, the pests are gone. Time to chill and mess around.â
With a softer tone than before, Arae-san chats with her friends as weâfive strongâhead out of the court. But thenâ
ââŠLame.â
Clear as day, Umi says it, aimed straight at Arae-san.
Her single wordâafter holding back âtil nowâfreezes me and the other three.
It was loud enough to hear, so of course, Arae-sanâs back twitches in response.
ââŠHuh? Whatâd you just say to me?â
âI said it. Got a problem?â
ââŠHeh. Thought you were all spineless, but looks like oneâs got some guts.â
Tossing the ball she was holding to a nearby friend, Arae-san turns toward us, eyes sharp.
âUmi⊠I get how you feel, but hold it together here.â
âItâs fine. Iâm not picking a fight or anythingânot like that childish jerk over there.â
âYou might not, but sheâs looking pretty ticked offâŠâ
Arae-sanâs group clearly doesnât want this to blow up either, trying to calm her down.
Itâs obvious these two donât meshâIâd been doing my best to keep them from clashing, but Umi finally hit her limit at the very end.
âArae Nagisa, right? My bestie might be soft, but Iâll never accept someone like you. A high schooler throwing tantrums like a kid, pissing off my precious friendsâand even your own crew over there. Donât you ever feel even a little ashamed of yourself?â
âStill preaching at this point? Who the hell are you, anyway? Youâre in our uniform, though.â
âSecond-year, Class 11, Asanagi Umi. Yuuâs been my best friend since elementary.â
ââŠAnother goody-goody, huh. Youâre all so damn annoying.â
No sign of fists flying with her friends holding her back, but the airâs still one spark from exploding.
A quick look around shows folks near the entrance starting to notice us.
If staff spot this, itâll get even messierâright then, someone in what looks like the facilityâs uniform walks over.
ââUh, excuse me, customers. Itâs getting a bit loudâwhatâs going on?â
âOh, sorry. Just a little mix-up over court time⊠Wait, huh?â
âHm? Oh, whoa.â
Why here, of all places? we both wanna sayâbut the staff who approached is, shockingly,
âMaki, huh.â
âEmi-senpai.â
The staff rushing over with a worried look? None other than Emi-senpai, my senior from my part-time job.
Whyâs she working hereâŠ? I wanna ask, but nowâs not the time.
âSo, whatâs up? Itâs kinda⊠intense over here.â
âWell, uhâŠâ
I fill her in quick, and sharp as ever, Emi-senpai steps right between Umi and Arae-san.
âCustomers, if thereâs trouble, Iâll hear you out, butââ
ââŠNah, nothing. I just misread the time. Itâs sorted now.â
âGot it. And you, uh⊠not Umi-chan, but the other customer?â
âOh, uh⊠Yeah, itâs fine. Sorry for the commotion.â
Maybe a grown-up third party cooled their headsâboth rein in their open hostility, looking sheepish.
I was sweating bullets for a sec, but thatâs Emi-senpai for you.
ââŠIâm outta here.â
â? Customer, you sure? You just paid not long agoâŠâ
âWe paid, so what we do with itâs up to us, right? âŠGuys, this place is pissing me offâletâs bounce.â
Her fire fizzling out, Arae-san reverts to her usual sulky scowl, dragging her friends out of the floor.
âŠLeaving the balls and gear scattered.
âHey, Arae-san, the cleanupââ
âItâs fine, donât worry. Iâll handle it. Iâm staff here, after all.â
âSorry for all this⊠By the way, Senpai, whyâre you here? What about our shop?â
âDouble-duty, my friendâdou-ble-du-ty. Planning a summer trip abroad with friends, so Iâm saving up. The shop alone wasnât cutting it.â
âOh, that makes senseâŠâ
Iâd worried sheâd quit after a fight with the manager, but thatâs a relief to hear.
Like she just proved, Emi-senpaiâs a rock when sheâs on the clock (only on the clock, mind you).
Iâm getting used to the job bit by bit, but Iâd still be sunk without her help.
âWell, the annoying customers are gone, so Iâll get back to work. Iâm at the medal loan counterâif anything comes up, holler right away.â
âSorry, Senpai. Youâre busy, and we dumped extra trouble on you.â
âDonât sweat it. Anyone else, maybe, but youâre all my precious, adorable kouhai. Oh, you two over thereâUmi-chanâs friends? Wanna swap contacts while weâre at it?â
âHuh? Oh, sureâif youâre okay with usââ
Just like that, Emi-senpai expands her circle. Sheâs already buddies with Umi and Amami-sanâdid they exchange contacts at some point?
Still just a third-year uni student⊠If I rack up experience, could I be like her someday?
âLinger too long, and Iâll get chewed out by my boss, so Iâm off for real this time. You all came all this wayâchill out and enjoy some more!â
âYes, thank you!â
After parting with Emi-senpai, we leave the sports floor and head back down to the amusement one.
After that mess, Iâm not super in the mood to play⊠but forcing a mood shift might be the move.
âUmi, since weâre here, letâs hang out a bit.â
ââŠYeah. What about you guys, Yuu?â
âThen Iâll join! Umiâs been glued to Maki-kun lately and hasnât hung out with me, so chances to hit places like this have dried up. Sanae-chan, Manaka-chan?â
âSure. Told my folks Iâd be late from club practice anyway.â
âWell, this counts as practice in a way~â
They nod happily, so we decide to stick around a little longer.
Medal games, prizes, racing, rhythm gamesâI wasnât into it at first, but games are fun. Bit by bit, my mood lifts.
âAhh! Umi, that itemâs cheating! No wayâ I just hit first place, so ban that! Itâs a banned card!â
âOh~? I canât hear you~ Here it goes!â
âGah!? Umi, youâre so mean~!â
âItâs a competition, after all~â
Seeing Umi and Amami-san having a blast is the best part. Half a year ago, when their bond hit a rough patch, this level of carefree laughter was unthinkable.
âŠBefore I became Umiâs âfriend,â this was probably a common sight.
âMaehara-san? Thinking about something?â
âNitori-san⊠Yeah, a bunch of stuff.â
Watching Umi and Amami-san race from behind, Nitori-san strikes up a chat.
A past mistake with Umi distanced her from them, but she (and Houjou-san) are still âbest friendsâ in their own right.
âLike, sometimes I wonder⊠Maybe Iâve done something bad to Umi and Amami-san.â
âHmm. Like youâve stolen their time together or something?â
âYeah⊠You nailed it.â
âHaha⊠Well, Iâve had similar thoughts myself, so I get it.â
ââŠOh, right, you have.â
Thinking about it, theyâd been âbest friendsâ with Umi foreverâuntil Amami-san swooped in and took her away.
Opposite positions, but similar situations.
âHonestly, I was jealous of Yuu-chan at first. Umi-chan was ours forever, and then she just zoomed past us⊠But we fell for Yuu-chanâs charm quick enough and ended up in that mess⊠Sorry, Maehara-san. Our fault.â
âLetâs drop that topic. Umiâs forgiven you already.â
Sheâs practically bowing like sheâs about to grovelâhurting Umi with a lie must still weigh on her heavy.
Theyâve paid their dues for it, though.
ââŠOkay, back to your point. I get why youâd feel that way, Maehara-san. Those two look so happy togetherâsometimes even we hesitate to jump in.â
âYou think so too, Nitori-san?â
âOf course. Weâre the ones who lost Umi-chan, so weâre the flip side of you⊠Maehara-san, no offense, but youâve got it good, huh?â
âT-ThanksâŠâ
Mapping this to their old dynamic: [Old Amami-san = Me], [Old Nitori-san & Co. = Amami-san]. Nitori-sanâs got a point.
Still, chatting like thisâNitori-sanâs got some quiet intensity.
âŠAll the girls around me get scary when madâno, theyâre all awesome for having strong convictions.
âHehe, kidding. Anyway, those two have always been like that, but Manaka and I enjoyed it too. Watching Umi-chan and Yuu-chan makes us happy, gives us energy⊠I bet Yuu-chan feels the same watching you and Umi-chan.â
âAmami-san, watching usâŠâ
âYeah. A friendâs happiness is your own, right? Sure, itâs lonely when someone youâve been tight with drifts away⊠but their happiness matters more now. At Umi-chanâs birthday party, I glanced at Yuu-chanâshe had this super kind smile.â
Back then, I was too caught up in Umiâs gift to notice anyone else.
I thought Amami-san teasing us was partly jealousy over me hogging Umiâbut maybe not.
ââŠSo? Helped at all?â
âYeah, for now, I guess.â
âGlad to hear it.â
Finishing our talk, Nitori-san and I turn back to the racing screen.
âAww, I lost~! Umi, one moreâjust one more round~!â
âFine⊠But just one, âcause itâs not fair to the others, okay?â
âYay! Ehehe, I love you, Umi!â
âH-Hey! Donât hug me right before the game starts⊠Geez.â
Watching my âgirlfriendâ and her âfriendâ banter as usual, I canât help but smile.
A friendâs happiness is your own.
âŠThatâs a good thing, I think.
After enjoying games âtil our wallets and moods lightened, we lined up at a certain machine for the dayâs finale.

Four girls and one guy, at a purikura booth.
Amami-san suggested snapping a group shot as a memento of todayâs five-person hangout.
âOh, look, the people ahead are doneâletâs go in! Câmon, Maki-kun tooâno holding back!â
âUh⊠Maybe Iâll wait outside, and you four can catch upââ
âMaki, come on.â
ââŠYes, maâam.â
Caught by Umi as I tried to escapeâgame over.
I kinda knew thisâd happen once I tagged along with four girls⊠Am I the only one feeling wildly out of place?
âWow, so this is how they are now. Itâs been ages since I last did purikuraâpretty high-tech stuff.â
âHey, can we pick stuff out~?â
âYeah! Make it something cool!â
âWell, with Yuu, anythingâd turn out cool anyway.â
Total purikura newbie here, so I just go with the fourâs chaotic choices.
Following the voice prompts, we pick a frame and start shooting.
Since the four of them are the stars here, I try sliding to the edge of the frameâbut why am I suddenly shoved into the center of the group?
âUh⊠Ladies, may I request an explanation?â
ââCause itâs way funnier this way, right? Right, everyone?â
âââYup!âââ
Amami-sanâs idea gets a unanimous voteâfour to one. Majority rules, so I end up between Umi and Amami-san, with Nitori-san and Houjou-san on either side.
â3, 2, 1.
Clickâand a blatant harem pic pops up on the screen, ripe for misunderstandings.
Like they planned it, the ex-Tachibana Girlsâ quartet points at my tense face, snickering.
Howâd it come to this?
âHehe, everyone looks super cute! Latest machine for the win.â
âYuu, wanna tweak it a bit? Whiten Makiâs skin, make his eyes all big and girly?â
âWhyâs it just meâŠ?â
âHehe, thatâd be fun⊠but letâs keep it as-is this time. Wanna save it as a memory.â
ââŠFine. Then just toss in todayâs date and namesâkeep it simple.â
They scribble our names over the photo with the built-in pen.
Four girls plus me, snug in a cute frame.
Pretty basic for a purikura loaded with fun edits, but this way, I wonât cringe looking back later.
Another new memory for me.
âMmm~ Today was a lot, but hanging with everyone was so fun~! Sanae-chan, Manaka-chan, thanks for today!â
âNo prob. Itâs been forever since we four hung outâfelt good.â
âMe too~ Busy with club and lessons, but Iâd love to do this again~â
âSee? Umi, letâs hang like this again sometime?â
ââŠYeah.â
The four drifted apart once, but the memories and bonds they built donât just vanish.
Sure, mistakes happened.
But if thereâs even a slim chance to fix thingsâand they want itâ
Seeing Umi smile quietly at the finished sticker, I feel again that suggesting they reconcile wasnât a mistake.
After thanking Emi-senpai again, we leave the arcade and head our separate ways.
Practice, a showdown, a little drama, and some uncharacteristicallyéæ„ (youthful) moments thrown in.
Exhausted from it all, but I canât forget itâs still a weekday.
A bit left âtil the weekendâIâve gotta push through.
âAlright, Manaka and I are off. Yuu-chan, Umi-chan, see ya!â
âMaehara-san, later~â
âYeah. See you.â
Weâll see Nitori-san and them soon for more practice.
Todayâs session was short due to time, but next timeâs supposedly intenseâI need to brace myself. On the train home, they said weâd join their usual self-practice routine.
âŠPraying my heart doesnât explode mid-session.
âLetâs head out too. Umi, wanna walk you home?â
âThanks. If youâre offering, Iâll take you up on it.â
Back to our usual crew, no need for formalitiesâUmi clings to my arm like sheâs spoiling herself. Past evening, itâs already dim out. Perfect time to sneak some couple time.
âOh my, guess Iâll head out first then. Me being noisy in the middleâd distract you two.â
âMaking weird considerations again⊠Itâs lateâjoin us backââ
âNope. Just told Mom, and Dadâs carâs nearbyâshe said to get picked up.â
âUncle? Hey, if itâs cool, can I say hi? Didnât get to at the birthday party either.â
âTo Dad? Sure. What about you, Maki-kun?â
âUhâŠâ
Iâll kill time nearby and you call me afterâŠâno way I can say that with the âpressureâ from my cute girlfriend next to me.
Amami-sanâs dad. First time meeting himâmight be good to know what heâs like.
ââŠMe too, then.â
âGot it. Letâs wait a bit longer, the three of us.â
Five minutes by the station entrance, and a car pulls up beside us.
The passenger window rolls down, revealing a serious-looking guy with silver-framed glasses in the driverâs seat.
âDad, Iâm back! And thanks for working hard.â
âWelcome home, Yuu. Got a sudden call from your momâthought something was up.â
âEhehe, got caught up having fun and ran late.â
âSorry, Uncle. We meant to head back earlier⊠Oh, long time no see.â
âUmi-chan, been a while. Wanted to celebrate your birthday in person, but I had an unavoidable business trip⊠And that boy thereâcould he beââ
âOh, yes. Iâm Maehara Maki. Amami-sa⊠Yuu-sanâs always helping me outââ
âNo need to be so stiff. Iâve heard plenty about you from my wife and daughterâwanted to meet you properly myself. Iâm the one who should say thanks for always looking after my Yuu. Iâm Hayato Amami, her dad.â
Despite the sudden greeting, Hayato-san listens calmly, not a trace of annoyance.
I braced for a scolding over keeping his precious daughter out late, but like Umiâs dad Daichi-san, Hayato-sanâs another kind adult Iâm lucky to know.
âHeading home? Want a lift? Maehara-kun, same direction, right?â
âYes, but weâre good walking. Itâs not far, and, uh, I promised Umi weâd go back together. Right, Umi?â
ââŠMm.â
âOh⊠I see. Fair enough then.â
Seeing me and Umiâs fingers firmly laced, Hayato-san backs off easily.
No prying into our relationship, sharp instinctsâdefinitely Amami-sanâs dad.
Next to him, his daughter giggles âHehe~â at usâshe could learn a thing or two.
âThen weâre off. Yuu, buckle up.â
âUmi, Maki-kun, bye-bye! See you tomorrow at school!â
âYuu, donât oversleep and hassle Uncle and Aunt, okay?â
âAmami-san, see you tomorrow.â
Waving back at Amami-san practically leaning out the window, weâre finally alone.
Hanging with Amami-san, Nitori-san, and Houjou-san was fun and good for me personally, butâŠ
âŠSelfishly, I kinda wanted just a bit more time alone with Umi, flirting around.
âUmi, letâs go.â
âYeah.â
Shoulder to shoulder, we start down the streetlamp-lit path at a slow pace.
Even this time of year, nights get chilly.
Gotta stick close to keep warm and avoid catching colds.
âMaki, good work today. Honest talkâpretty rough, huh?â
âYeah. Tried not to show it, but the purikura part was my limit.â
Kept a calm face for Amami-san and them, not wanting to worry them, but after the Arae-san fiasco, my day was mentally done.
Playingâs one thing, but with that trouble sandwiched in, Iâm twice as wipedâprobably as bad as after my first shift at work.
âGotcha. You did great, Maki.â
âYeah, I worked hard. Umi, pamper me.â
âSure. There, thereâgood job. You were cool, Maki.â
Iâd love to dive into Umiâs arms and soak up all the affection, but weâre still en route, so I settle for head pats.
ââŠHey, Maki.â
âHm?â
âSorry. Back then, I did something pretty unlike me, huh.â
âYou mean with Arae-san?â
ââŠâŠâ
Umi nods with a small kokuri.
Like she said, it was definitely unexpected for her to say something like that at that moment.
Iâd heard about Arae-san from both me and Amami-san, so Umi mustâve known how sheâd react too.
And knowing that, Umi did it on purpose.
âBut after everything she said, I just couldnât stay quiet. If it was just about me, maybe I couldâve let it slide, but when she turned it on everyone else⊠Yuuâs trying so hard to talk it out patiently, but I canât do that. I donât think I can ever get along with her. I donât want to say this, but⊠itâs like, physiologically, I canât stand her.â
There it isâclear, outright rejection. For Umi, whoâs always managed to get along with everyone on the surface, saying this is seriously rare.
In other words, sheâs decided to treat her that way at school too.
Since getting close to Umiâno, probably even before thatâIâd never heard her badmouth anyone.
â! âŠOh, shoot, sorry. Iâm doing it againâsomething unlike me.â
âReally? I actually feel relieved seeing the usual Umi.â
âHuh?â
But to me, itâs not that surprising.
âI mean, youâre not some perfect girl, right, Umi? You hide it at school, but deep down, youâre selfish, jealous, and sometimes your mouth gets sharp. Oh, and youâre quick to throw hands too. Youâre just a normal girl.â
âIs that really normal? Also, me throwing hands is your fault, Makiânot mine.â
âAdd âquick to blame othersâ to the list too.â
ââŠMeanie.â
With that, Umi butts her head into my chest, nuzzling in like sheâs spoiled.
She doesnât show this side to anyone but me, but Asanagi Umi isnât always prim and properâsheâs got the messy human parts everyone has.
Like today, if someone pisses her off, sheâll get mad, and if she canât hold it in, sheâll pick a fight. Even badmouthing someone behind their backâsheâll do it.
âAnyway, what Iâm trying to say is, youâre never âunlike yourself,â Umi. The honor-student-mode Umi at school is âyou,â and whining to me like this, feeling bad about being âunlike yourselfââitâs all totally Umi.â
âSo, basically, everything I do is âme,â is that it?â
âYeah, pretty much.â
Thatâs just how I see itâmaybe everyone else would call it âunlike her.â
The âperfect Asanagi Umiâ is a mask she wears to hide her true self, and this side she shows me is the real deal.
But then, whereâd that mask come from in the first place?
A mask to hide her inner self isnât something she picked up from outsideâit grew from her own awareness that she shouldnât show her messy side to everyone. So that mask is a key piece of who Umi is too⊠at least, thatâs what I think.
Thatâs why I care about her so much, all of it included.
âŠSaying stuff like this out loud is way too embarrassing, though.
âUmi, lend me your ear.â
â? Sure.â
âââ
I pull her into a tight hug and whisper secretly into her ear, just for her to hear.
Realizing I just said something ridiculously cheesy and straight-up, my cheeks heat up fast, and I squeeze her tighter to hide it.
In response, Umi wraps her arms around my back, pressing even closer.
âGeez, youâre such an idiot, Maki. Lately, youâve been a bit much⊠You like me too much.â
âW-Well, thatâs fine, isnât it? Weâre dating.â
âSure, but youâre affirming all of me way too much. If you keep this up, Iâll just turn into a total mess.â
âWouldnât that be fine? Then weâd balance each other outâIâd be all for it.â
ââŠYouâre really an idiot.â
The strength in Umiâs arms fades, and instead, she leans her whole weight into me, like sheâs handing everything over.
âThen⊠if youâre gonna say that much, youâd better keep supporting me forever, okay? I donât think I can stand on my own without you anymore, Maki.â
âOf course. Itâs you and me, together forever.â
âThen, piggyback.â
âWait, when did this turn into physically supporting you?â
âWhat~? You just said youâd support me~! Liar, idiot Maki!â
âNo, I meant that in a mental senseâŠâ
Getting dragged around by Umiâs selfishness is kinda tough, but even that feels precious to me, so what can I do?
On the quiet country road empty of people at night, only our giggling voices echoed on and on.
After yesterdayâs mess, with Amami-sanâs team vibe getting worse and Umiâs team pushing harder than ever thanks to my support, the gap between them was about to become painfully clear the very next day.
Fifth period PE, right after lunch break.
As planned, until the class match, regular lessons are swapped for practice in our chosen events.
Iâm doing softball, Umiâs on basketball. Normally, thatâd mean the field for me and the gym for her, butâŠ
ââŠThe rainâs not letting up, huh.â
I mutter that while staring out the classroom window at the dreary sky pouring intermittent rain.
Itâs that fickle season, and unlike yesterday, itâs been cold and rainy since morning.
The PE committee classmate officially told us both guys and girls are gathering in the gym today.
(Asanagi) Maki, itâs been a while since weâre together, huh.
(Maehara) Yeah.
(Maehara) Though, practice is split by gender, so the most we can do is watch each other from afar.
(Asanagi) Just watching me is enough.
(Asanagi) Oh, if we end up in a practice match with Yuuâs team, youâll cheer for me properly, right?
(Maehara) Donât worry. I wonât shout it out, but Iâll be praying for you in my heart.
(Asanagi) Hehe, good.
(Asanagi) You promised to support me, didnât you?
(Maehara) I did, but hearing it like that suddenly makes it sound kinda heavy.
(Asanagi) Kidding! Geez, if you take it that seriously, Iâll be the one in trouble!
Even so, maybe because yesterday stuck with her, Umiâs been like this all morning.
Itâs proof my words meant something solid to her, and Iâm happy she trusts me more for it⊠but after how good the vibe was yesterday, I definitely overdid the cool-guy act.
âŠThinking back, itâs still embarrassing.
(Asanagi) Alright, Iâve gotta change, so Iâm heading out first.
(Maehara) Sure. See you at the gym.
At this rate, sheâll probably put on a great show at practice. Umi being fired up naturally rubs off on the others, which means our class is shaping up to be a real threat.
As for Amami-sanâs team, set to face Umiâs Class 11 crewâŠ
ââŠâŠâ
ââŠâŠâ
Their vibe was the worst itâs ever been.
After yesterdayâs clash, I figured Arae-san might say something to me about the âcarryoverâ apology call, but she hasnât glared at me or Amami-sanâjust sitting quietly at her desk, looking bored.
Quiet, sure, but sheâs totally ignoring us, so the tensionâs still sketchy.
âAmami-san, we should head out soon too.â
âOh, yeah. Gotta hurry, or the changing roomâll get packed.â
Prompted by other classmates, Amami-san leaves the room, but her eyes keep drifting to Arae-san with worry.
Come to think of it, what does Amami-san think about yesterday?
Since Umi and I jumped on Arae-san first, Amami-san stayed back, fretting over usâbut that didnât mean she was speaking for her own feelings.
Will she keep patiently trying to talk it out, or cut her losses here, keep distance, and stick to the bare minimum?
My loyaltyâs with Umi, no question⊠but as a classmate and friend, I canât help worrying about Amami-san too.
âŠI know itâs meddling where I shouldnât.
I whip out my phone and fire off a message to someone.
(Maehara) Nitta-san, got a sec?
(Nina) Huh?
(Nina) A message from the class repârare! Whatâs up? Trying to hit on me?
(Maehara) No, itâs about what we talked about at lunch.
(Nina) Deny it with some panic at least! Youâre no fun.
(Nina) So, whatâs the deal?
(Nina) Too tricky for the group chat, right?
(Maehara) Yeah, pretty much.
(Maehara) Iâll tell Umi later, though.
(Nina) You two are as clingy as ever. So, what is it?
(Nina) Iâll hear you outâchalk it up as a favor owed.
(Maehara) Thanks.
So, I decide to ask Niita-sanâthe only one of us not tangled up in this messâto back up Amami-san.
Sheâs got some connection with Arae-san and gets along evenly with most of the girlsâ groups, so sheâs gotta be able to help.
A favor owed means Iâm a bit nervous about what sheâll ask for later, though.
For now, Iâll brace myself for treating her to a diner meal plus pizza delivery.
(Nina) Got it. For now, itâs wait-and-see, but if it gets dicey, Iâll step in casually.
(Nina) Pain in the butt, though.
(Maehara) Sorry.
(Maehara) I donât have many people I can lean on for stuff like this.
(Nina) Figures. I donât either, honestly.
(Maehara) Really? Thatâs surprising.
(Nina) Nah, not surprisingâitâs normal. Totally normal.
(Nina) Youâre the lucky one, Class Rep. Surrounded by good people.
(Maehara) Iâm grateful for that.
(Nina) Sure you are.
(Nina) Whatever. Class is starting, so thatâs that.
(Maehara) Yeah, thanks.
(Nina) Yep.
(Nina) Oh, one last thingâdonât do this kinda stuff too much from now on.
(Nina) Depends on the person, but a lot of girls donât like it when their guy secretly chats with another girl. Even if you report it later, after-the-fact isnât great.
(Maehara) Even with a reason?
(Nina) Yep, even then. A reasonâs just you thinking itâs okayâdoesnât mean it is for Asanagi.
(Nina) Oops, said Asanagi.
(Nina) Sorry, cut that part.
(Maehara) No need to cut it⊠but yeah, youâre right.
(Maehara) Iâll be more careful.
(Nina) Hm~
Itâs hard to tell over the phone, but this back-and-forth is basically the same as sneaking a private chat behind her back.
Maybe Iâm overthinking it, but to keep Umi totally at ease, this is probably the right level of caution.
ââŠGuess Iâll shoot Umi a quick heads-up.â
I send Umi a message about asking Niita-san for help, then head to the gym after her.
Dating and friendshipsâ
I thought I had it figured out, but thereâs still so much I donât get.
Switching from indoor shoes to gym sneakers, I step inside to find practice already underway, the court split in half for guys and girls.
Judging by the gear being set up with the teacher, looks like the guys are on volleyball, and the girls are doing basketball.
Beyond the net stretched across the gymâs center, the girls are shooting at their respective hoops.
Me⊠well, Iâm not playing volleyball in the match, so Iâll stick to fetching balls.
During pre-practice stretching, Iâm quietly loosening up my stiff joints and muscles in a corner when I catch some hushed chatter from the guys nearby.
âŠ
I didnât want the details and bolted quick, but it seems they were talking about Amami-san shooting hoops.
Something about her chest being impressive, or whatever.
Since weâre about to get moving hard, Amami-sanâs ditched her tracksuit top, down to just her gym shirt.
A white shirt with the school crest embroidered in blue above her left chest, marking her as a second-year. Her undershirt peeks out from the collar gap, so itâs not like her underwearâs showingâŠ
Whatâs so impressive? Well, watching her practice, itâs obvious fast.
ââMan, theyâre bouncing, huh. Wonât say what, though.â
ââŠAre you talking to me?â
âWho else is around you?â
ââŠNo one, butââ
âOops, sorry if I offended you. If youâre free, wanna chat a bit?â
Whenâd he sneak up? Stretching next to me and spouting tactless stuff is Nakamura-san.
âSeriously, itâs fine when weâre separate, but the second weâre together like this, the guys start gawking and whispering about the girlsâ bodies, rating them and all. Guys really are a dumb species. Not saying itâs filthy, but theyâre way too ruled by their lower halves.â
âYeah. Iâm kinda the same, though.â
âReally? Compared to the rest, Iâd say youâve got some sense as a guy⊠Oh, wait, noâitâs not sense, youâre just obsessed with Umi-pai. My bad.â
âU-UmiâŠ?â
Thatâs a super weird way to put it, but I get what Nakamura-sanâs hinting at with âthat,â so I donât press her.
Seems she caught me, but my main focus wasnât Amami-sanâit was Umi, shooting at the hoop on the opposite side.
âŠNot to make excuses, but I was looking at Umi as a whole, not zeroing in on one part like the other classmates.
Still, I canât deny it caught my eye, so yeah, Iâm part of the âdumb speciesâ too.
âSeeing you side by side like this, Nakamura-san, youâre really tall, huh. Did you play something in middle school?â
âNope. Just your average mystery-loving lit girl. But for some reason, Iâve got the build, so I get dragged into stuff like this. I debated volleyball, but Umi-paiâs charm won me over this time.â
ââŠIâm not gonna comment on that.â
âAw, too bad.â
Cackling, Nakamura-san takes off her black-rimmed glasses.
I hadnât noticed, distracted by the plain frames and her quirky speech, but up close, sheâs got a sharp, gallant face.
Kinda androgynousâmore likely to win over girls than guys, Iâd say.
âAnyway, Iâve gotta head out soon. Weâve got a match coming up, so make sure you cheer for your precious Asanagi-chan properly, Maehara-kun.â
âOf course⊠but since theyâre the enemy team in the class match, itâs kinda tricky.â
âHuh? No need to overthink it. Even if theyâre in our class, cheering for a team like thatâd just pile up frustration, donât you think?â
âWhat?â
âAlright, catch ya later.â
With a smug little huff through her nose, Nakamura-san heads toward the hoop where Umi and the other four are waiting.
âOi, Nakamura, what were you chatting about with Maehara-shi over there?â
âMio, you were having so much fun talking to Maehara-kun that our aceâs shot accuracy tanked. Right, Asanagi-san?â
âWhaâ!? N-No, Iâm not, like, doubting him or anythingâŠâ
âSee, guys, Asanagi-chanâs just too cute!â
âââTotally!âââ
âUgh, youâre all idiotsâŠâ
Their voices carry right over, making me itch with awkwardness, but no doubtâtheir teamworkâs solid.
Plus, Umi blushing and squirming is adorable.
Meanwhile, on the flip sideâŠ
âUh, um, Arae-san.â
ââŠWhat?â
âYesterday got messy, but, uh, letâs do our best today, okay? Iâll give it my all, so letâs work together?â
ââŠâŠâ
â? Um, Arae-saââ
âShut up. Donât talk to me.â
ââŠâ
Amami-sanâs four teammates aside, Arae-sanâs been off on her own since warm-ups, completely unapproachable.
âForget it, Amami-san.â
âJust leave her beâletâs do our best with the four of us.â
âWeâre counting on you, Amami-san.â
The other three, unaware of yesterday, arenât hiding their frustration with Arae-san, who wonât blend into the team.
Cheering for a team like thatâd just pile up frustration, huh.
ââŠSheâs right, but hearing it from someone in another class stings a littleâŠâ
Nakamura-sanâs got a point, but since Amami-sanâs part of it, I canât just ditch them that easily.
From what I can see, it looks like Amami-sanâs team is about to face Umiâs in a practice matchâwonder how thisâll play out.
With classmates watching their chosen teams, the match between Class 10-A and Class 11-A is about to kick off.
Per school rules, girlsâ matches run 20 minutes totalâ10-minute halves. League games end in a draw if tied (finals get overtime), and the rest follows current standard rules.
Before the game, Umiâs team is pumped, forming a huddle.
âAlright, everyone. Itâs just practice today, but weâll face them in the real deal too, so letâs go for the win!â
âNakamura, whyâre you taking charge? Isnât that the captainâs job? Right, Asanagi-chan?â
âThereâs no rule saying the captain has to do it⊠but if itâs fine with meââ
With that, Umi closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
Sheâs got a grudge match here, but she seems calm for nowâgood sign.
ââLetâs win, everyone. Class 11, fight!â
ââââOhhh!ââââ
Their fired-up cheer echoes through the gym, drawing shouts from the Class 11 girls in the stands.
With more girls in Umiâs class, their cheering section naturally outshouts ours.
Seeing that, Amami-san tries to rally her team into a huddle too, sending eye signals to her teammates, but one totally ignores her, so she gives up.
At the teacherâs whistle, everyone heads to center court.
Umi and Amami-sanâs eyes lock as captains.
âUmi, you know this, but donât hold back, okay? Thatâd be boring.â
âObviously. I wouldnât even dream of going easy on you, Yuu.â
They shake hands firmly, and itâs time for the jump ball.
âNakamura-san, as planned, alright?â
âLeave it to me. Perfect chance to use this big olâ frame.â
Class 11âs jumper is Nakamura-san, the tallest of their five. Looking at it, Umiâs second-shortest on her team. Their average height beats ours too.
âUh, what about us? Arae-sanâs the tallest here, I guessâŠâ
ââŠYou do it, Amami. Iâll pass.â
âOkay, then.â
Our jumperâs Amami-san. Compared to Nakamura-san, sheâs maybe ten centimeters shorter? With her volleyball-worthy arms, though, the gap might be bigger overall.
But the first jump ball goes to Amami-san.
âWhoa, s-so highâŠ!?â
ââNgh!â
Nakamura-sanâs jump wasnât bad by any means, but Amami-sanâs leap is unreal.
Ignoring height and reach, she wins the height battle and slaps the ball toward her side.
Her insane athleticism draws gasps from the crowd.
The bouncing ball rolls straight to Arae-san.
ââŠHaa.â
I thought sheâd let it pass, but with an annoyed look, she grabs it and starts dribbling at a lazy rhythm, strolling toward the enemy side.
âArae-san!â
âFine, Iâll do it. Skipping outâd just make more trouble later.â
ââŠYeah. Thatâs enough for nowâthanks.â
ââŠTch, annoying.â
Sheâs still grumbling, but not ditching the play is a win in itself.
Not like sheâs jumping in with enthusiasm, though.
âPass.â
âOh, uh, yeahâŠâ
After moving the ball forward a bit, Arae-san tosses it back to Amami-san. Since Amami-sanâs likely our ace, funneling the ball to her isnât a bad call.
(Arae-san⊠her ball handlingâs kinda smooth, isnât it?)
Itâs just a glance, so I canât say for sure, but her dribble and that pass to Amami-sanâevery move looks polished. The pass lands perfectly at Amami-sanâs chest, easy to catch.
Thinking back, when she messed with Amami-sanâs shot yesterday, it was like she aimed the ball dead-on. Couldâve been luck, but the odds of an amateur nailing that by chance are next to zero.
Maybe sheâs got basketball experience from middle school or earlier.
Well, weâll find out by watching.
âSorry, Asanagi-chan, they got the ball.â
âNo worries. Letâs steal it back.â
âGot it, okay.â
After a quick word to Nakamura-san, Umi jumps into defensive positions with the team.
Theyâre going man-to-man for now, but the matchups are unexpected.
âHehe, hi there. Yuu-p⊠er, Amami-chan. Iâve heard all about you from Asanagi-chan. Iâm Nakamura Mioânice to meet ya.â
âHey, Nakamura-san. Iâm Amami, Umiâs bestie. Uh, what were you about to call me just now?â
âOh, that? Just flubbed my line a bitâdonât mind it.â
Straining my ears, I catch Nakamura-san about to say something dumb again.
Like the guys said, Amami-sanâs âthoseâ do stand out more than Umiâs⊠but thanks to Nakamura-sanâs weird comment, I keep thinking about chests. This is bad.
Anyway, the real issue is the other pairing.
ââŠâŠâ
ââŠâŠâ
With a creak of her shoes, Umi marks Arae-san.
âWhat, you?â
âNothing.â
They trade a single word, then look away, keeping a careful distance.
For Arae-sanâs personality, thatâs pretty standard, but after yesterday, Iâm sweating bullets inside.
Hope they donât get too heated and start swinging outside of defense.
âUgh, seriously, every single one of themâŠâ
â? Arae-san?â
âAmami, over here.â
Arae-san wiggles her index finger at Amami-san.
Probably a âgimme the ballâ signal.
Catching it instantly, Amami-san passes it over, a bit stunned but obliging.
âHuh, feeling a little motivated now?â
âNot really.â
âRight.â
Arae-sanâs still standing there half-asleep holding the ball when Umiâs hand darts out fast.
I thought sheâd snag it in that split-second gap, but the ballâs not in Umiâs right hand where it should be.
â!?â
The moment Umi moves to steal, Arae-san smirks, slipping the ball behind her back to dodge, then charges forward toward the hoop.
Everyone on the court freezes at the sudden play from someone whoâd shown zero effort âtil now.
ââŠHere.â
Shaking off Umiâs defense like itâs nothing, she goes free and shoots with the same momentum.
Not quite a layup, not a standard under-the-hoop shotâjust a lazy form.
But the ball sails cleanly through the ringâs center.
âA-AmazingâŠâ
Someone on the court gaspsâprobably Amami-san, judging by the voiceâbut Iâm too shocked to check, along with everyone else watching.
As the ball bounces right under the hoop, Arae-san turns to Umi and mutters low.
âLame.â
Like sheâs mimicking Umiâs tone from yesterday. Paying her back.
She doesnât say more, but sheâs gotta be experienced.
And not just casuallyâsheâs put in real work.
ââŠYouâve been hiding it âtil now.â
âNot really.â
Glancing at a frustrated Umi, Arae-san strolls back to her side.
âWhoa, amazing! Arae-san, did you play basketball? You couldâve just said so!â
ââŠNo need to tell you.â
âFair, maybe⊠but that was awesome! So cool!â
âWhatever.â
It was a total lone-wolf move that left most of her team baffled, but Amami-san still praises her straight-up.
Given their history, complimenting her like this canât be easy, but thatâs Amami-sanâs natureâher core kindness shining through.
Anyway, thatâs the first point for Class 10.
âDonât sweat it, Asanagi-chan. She was just better that time.â
âDidnât expect her to be experienced. Letâs take it back next time.â
âYeah, for sure.â
Though thrown off by Arae-sanâs surprise skill, Umi steadies herself fast with her teammatesâ support.
Amami-sanâs team has the technical edge, while Umiâs crew covers their gaps with teamwork.
The gameâs only just started.
