Vol 3 Ch 3
Chapter Three | The Crazy Mishaps of Homecoming and Cohabitation
 âĄâĄâĄ
âAzaki lofts itâand Makijima! Goal! Itâs a tie! The Koutou University freshman duo has pulled off a stunning equalizer with brilliant teamwork against the pros!â
âŠ
A week has passed since that intense Emperorâs Cup first-round battle.
I, Yutarou Makijima, wake up as usual at 5 a.m., take a walk in the nearby park, then ease into my regular running route.
Breathing the cool morning air, I wipe sweat with a towel and head back to my apartment for a shower.
Just another normal dayâor so it should be.
After my shower, I return to my room⊠and there, curled up asleep on my bed like a small animal, is a beautiful girl.

âŁâŁâŁ
ââŠZzzâŠâ
Sasaki Ayane, former center of the mega-idol group Genesistars, once hailed as a national treasure-level beauty. Even her sleeping face is adorable.
I hate to wake her, but itâs about time.
âAyane, wake up.â
ââŠMmm? Itâs only six,â she mumbles, cracking one eye open to check her phone above her head.
Then she pulls the blanket over herself to go back to sleep.
âYouâve got first period, right? Get up and get ready.â
I yank the blanket off and pull her out of bed.
âUghhh.â
âDonât give me that whiny voice. Iâll make breakfast, so go take a bath.â
âStill sleepyâŠâ
âGod, youâre so bad at mornings. Yesterday, you were out cold until I woke you too.â
âThatâs âcause⊠Y-Yutarou, you keep me up every night.â
âW-Well! Thatâs a two-way street!â
ââŠâ
ââŠâ
The air gets awkward, but we push through our morning routine. While Ayaneâs in the bath, I prepare breakfast and set it on the low table in the middle of the room.
Todayâs menu: toast, scrambled eggs, corn soup, and veggie juiceâa classic bachelor spread.
As I hear the hairdryer, I watch soccer on TV. The sports worldâs buzzing about Mishiro Takato, the 28-year-old Ballon dâOr winner, reportedly moving from Spainâs Balsamico to an English BIG6 club.
My tying goal against pros in the Emperorâs Cup didnât even make a blip on the net. Puts things in perspectiveâmy achievementâs small potatoes.
I need to go pro soon⊠for Ayane.
âYutarou?â
Ayaneâs back, hair dried.
âNot eating?â
âWas waiting for you. Eating alone feels⊠weird.â
ââŠHehe. I love that about you, Yutarou.â
She takes it as sweet, but honestly, itâs from my boysâ school days when underclassmen couldnât touch chopsticks until seniors were ready. Canât tell her that.
Lately, Ayaneâs been dropping âI love youâs constantly. Itâs not bad, but since we started dating, sheâs more dere than tsun, which is kinda disappointing. I weirdly miss her slaps or punches⊠Whatâs wrong with me?
âHey, donât you think this place is too small for two?â
âYour stuffâs the problem. Beauty gadgets and skincare crap all over⊠What more do you need to âfixâ? Youâre already gorgeous.â
âGirls have to care about beauty daily! And I watch my diet to stay slim!â
Says the pancake fiendâŠ
âAnyway! This room and bed are too small for two. I want more furniture, so weâre moving!â
âWhat? Moving? What do I tell my parents?â
âHehe.â
Ayane grins confidently, slapping two bus tickets on the table.
âI knew youâd say that, so I got bus tickets.â
ââŠBus?â
Whatâs she on about?
âWeâve been dating a week, so itâs time to meet your parents.â
âA week, you mean. Your sense of time is nuts⊠Wait, my parents?â
âDuh. Mine are overseas for work.â
First Iâm hearing about her parents. Overseas, huh?
âYouâre off tomorrow and the day after, right? Letâs cancel the two-day pancake date and go to Yamanashi.â
âNo wayâŠâ
My familyâs super country. Theyâll lose it meeting Kiraboshi Ayane. But⊠better than a two-day pancake hell.
A stormy homecomingâs about to start.
ââ
Practice ends before 6 p.m., and I skip extra training to leave the field. Tonight at 8, Ayane and I take a bus to Yamanashi.
Living in Tokyo since March for practice, itâs been two months since Iâve been back.
âThis morning, Ayane was weirdly excited to meet my parentsâŠâ
As a former top idol, sheâs got some guts.
If I had to meet her parents, my stomach would churn. They sound like big shots overseas. If my dumb side showed, theyâd probably say, âYouâre not good enough for our Ayane!â
Getting nervous over hypotheticals, I get home to find Ayane humming cheerfully while folding laundry.
Sheâs in a new pink apron over a striped top and wide-leg jeans.
ââȘ Hmm-hmm~â
Whyâs she so hyped?
âIâm back.â
âWelcome home! Good work at practice.â
Her warm greeting melts my anxiety, calming my heart.
âWhyâre you grinning? Something good happen?â
âNah, just⊠thanks for the laundry. Didnât you have lectures all afternoon? Mustâve been busy.â
âNot really. I finished early, so I washed dishes and folded laundry while waiting.â
âŠToo perfect a wife.
âIâll help.â
I wash my hands and join her, grabbing laundry. At first, I thought living together was weird, but Ayaneâs been dreaming of this for three years.
The Kiraboshi Ayane crushing on me for three years⊠Itâs like a grand love story.
But itâs real.
âOh, something came in the mail. From Azaki, I think.â
âAzaki? Didnât mention anything.â
âProbably something dumb. I didnât ask for anything.â
âWhat is it?!â
âIf youâre curious, check it out.â
âA surprise gift! Azakiâs rough, but thatâs kinda cool.â
His roughness is why itâs probably junkâŠ
Ayane eagerly opens the large envelope.
ââŠW-Whatâs this?â
Itâs a book⊠How to Please a Woman at Night⊠Yeah, that kind of title.
âThat frizzy-headed jerk! Worst taste ever!â
I told her not to expect much from Azaki.
âWeâre not telling him our new address when we move.â
âWas thinking the same.â
Days like thisâchatting and doing chores togetherâfeel like weâre already married.
âWhatâs up?â
âJust thinking weâre like a married couple.â
Her hands freeze mid-fold.
âD-Donât say stuff like thatâŠâ
Whyâs she blushing?
âYouâre the one who brought up meeting my parents. Thatâs bolder.â
âIs it?â
âYeah, it is.â
âI⊠even when we kissed, I thought maybe we should get your parentsâ approval first.â
âThatâd just make it awkward!â
âIâm the older one, so I gotta be proper.â
She says it with a smug look.
âThatâs got nothing to do with itâŠâ
Sheâs off, but if sheâs happy, fine.
âLetâs go get that cohabitation approval.â
âYup!â
ââ
We take the reserved bus, arriving in Yamanashi in about two hours, then walk a bit.
âAyane, this is my place.â
A big house surrounded by fields and nature.
Itâs dark, but the mountains loom, and the airâs clearer than Tokyoâs.
I take off my mask and glasses, close my eyes, and breathe deeply.
âMmm! Feels amazing! So different from the city.â
âRight?â
âYou grew up breathing this air, Yutarou.â
This nature-filled town shaped Makijima Yutarou, the soccer player.
âMy place is kinda old-fashioned, so bear with it.â
Yutarou points at the house, self-deprecating.
âItâs not old-fashioned! Itâs, like, vintage, full of history.â
âThatâs not a compliment.â
A low-roofed, red-tiled house, typical of the countryside. Itâs nice, not old-fashioned, but Yutarouâs weirdly down on it. Maybe itâs his city-country perspective.
He pulls my suitcase, guiding me.
âItâs dark, so you canât see much, but thereâs a vineyard across the street. My parents work there.â
âGrapes! I wanna eat some.â
âTheyâre not ripe yet, but we can get some in town later.â
I nod eagerly. Grape pancakes sound divine.
âYouâre thinking about pancakes, arenât you?â
âH-Howâd you know?â
âItâs written all over your face. Please donât make that goofy face in front of my parents.â
âI-I wonât!â
I slipped, but Iâll be proper for his parents. Iâm the older one!
âReady, Ayane? Letâs go in.â
Yutarou checks at the front door. I nod slightly, and he slides it open.
Time to meet Yutarouâs parentsâ
The moment the door opens, a girl my height with brown side-tails, maybe a high schooler, stands there.
âWhyâre you here, MizuhaâŠ?â
âCame back from the dorm to mess with you, Onii! And you actually brought a girlfriend!â
âY-Yutarou⊠whoâs she?â
âMy sisterââ
âMakijima Mizuha! Is she really your girlfriend?!â
She steps closer.
âY-Yeah.â
âWow! Sheâs insanely cute up close! Wait, she looks like⊠that idol, Kiraboshi Ayane? Dating someone with idol-level looks? Nice one, Onii!â
She pokes Yutarouâs side as he pales.
âFor now, get to the kitchen. We need a family meeting,â Yutarou says firmly.
Sure, passing as a lookalike would be easier, but we canât hide it from family.
Worried about Yutarouâs stomach, I steel myself.
Mizuha ushers me inside.
âNee-san, Nee-san.â
âMe?â
âYouâre Oniiâs girlfriend, so youâre my Nee-san now.â
âOh, right.â
Being called Nee-san feels kinda nice.
âWhat do you like about Onii?â
âUh, w-wellâŠâ
âHis face, right? Heâs got a virgin personality, but his face is solid.â
âDonât say that to your brother!â
âSo, what is it?â
âHis face is nice, but⊠itâs his dedication. On the field, heâs so serious, so disciplined⊠That goal in the Emperorâs Cup was his hard work paying off! And his smile after scoring makes my heart skip!â
âAyane⊠donât say that stuff in front of my sister. Itâs embarrassing,â Yutarou mutters, looking away.
I blush, looking down.
âUgh, too sweet! Iâm gonna puke!â Mizuha groans.
Yutarou opens the living room door and steps in. I grab a gift box of sweets from my bag and follow.
âYo, welcome back, Yutarou.â
A man in work clothes sits on a sofa in the spacious living room. His rugged voice and dapper looks scream Yutarouâs dadâhandsome in a leading-man way.
Yutarouâll age into that kind of cool, I bet.
âHey, Dad. This is my girlfriendââ
âHello! Iâm Yutarou-kunâs girlfriendââ
âSasaki-san, right? Iâm Daisaku, Yutarouâs dad. Thanks for putting up with this idiot son of mine.â
âN-No, itâs nothing. Please, accept this small gift.â
I offer the sweets, and he stands, exchanging deep bows.
âThanks for the courtesy. I thought Yutarouâs girlfriend would be some bubbly gal, butâŠâ
âWhatâs your image of me, Dad? Whereâs Mom?â
âSheâll be here soon.â
A woman in an apron steps through the kitchenâs noren curtainâwait.
âYuu-chan! Welcome home!â
âHey, Mom.â
âYou brought a girlfriend? Oh, what a cute young lady!â
Sheâs so youthful and beautiful, I almost mistook her for an older sister. But⊠this dĂ©jĂ vu.
Where have I seen her?
âAyane? You okay?â
âN-Nothing! Um, nice to meet you. Iâm Sasaki Ayane, Yutarou-kunâs girlfriend.â
âOh, Yuu-chanâs always in your care. Iâm his mom, Erika. Youâre so prettyâsure youâre okay with Yuu-chan?â
âWhatâs with you two? Saying Iâm not good enough?â Yutarou snaps.
âYuu-chan used to say he hated talking to girls. Youâre not being mean to Ayane-chan, are you?â
âDonât dig up my childhood! Things are different now.â
Did Yutarou avoid girls back then? No, with his thing for older women, he probably just disliked classmates. His first love was an older girl nearby⊠I kinda wanna meet her.
âAnyway! Iâve got something to tell Dad, Mom, and Mizuha.â
Yutarou steers us back on track.
âNo way, Yutarou! Student marriage?!â Daisaku exclaims.
âYuu-chan, I wonât forgive a shotgun wedding! You better have usedââ
âOniiâs getting married?!â Mizuha shrieks.
âUgh, everyone sit down!â Yutarou yells, angrier than ever.
ââ
We sit around the living room table: Ayane and me side by side, Mom, Dad, and Mizuha across.
âSo, Yutarou, whatâs this about?â Dad asks.
Where to start?
âItâs about Ayane.â
I glance at her. She nods slightly, standing.
âActually⊠three years ago, I was an idol. Kiraboshi Ayane.â
The warm glow of the ceiling bulb contrasts the ice-cold silence that follows.
âWhat? I thought she looked familiar, but Nee-sanâs really Kiraboshi Ayane?!â Mizuha grabs Ayaneâs hand, hyped.
Dad and Mom stare at her, expressionless.
âThatâs wild! Oniiâs dating a former idolâthe Kiraboshi Ayane! But⊠whyâre Mom and Dad so stiff?â
Read the room, sis.
Parents would freak if their son brought home a former celebrity. I was naive thinking their cheery vibe would make this a laugh.
ââŠâ
ââŠâ
Back in middle school, when I joined Tokyo Frontierâs Jr. Youth, they worried like crazy.
Dating Kiraboshi Ayane comes with risks. No matter how much I love Sasaki Ayane, her idol past doesnât vanish.
Their reaction must mean theyâre worried⊠right?
This vibe might nix cohabitationâor even dating.
I glance at Ayane, who looks back, troubled. Iâve gotta be clear.
âDad, Mom, if youâre worried about me, Iâm fine. Ayaneâs a former superstar, and yeah, she might draw attention. But I need her. You saw the Emperorâs Cup, right? That goal happened because Ayane supported me.â
I plead, but their faces donât budge.
Is it hopeless?
âI-Iâm serious about Yutarou-kun! Please, let us be together!â Ayane bows, forehead nearly hitting the table.
I stand and bow too.
Sorry, Ayane⊠my parents are so stubborn.
If they donât approve, what do weâ
âHahaha!â Dad bursts out laughing, clutching his stomach.
Laughing?
âSorry, I couldnât hold it in.â
What?
âYutarou, Mizuha, Sasaki-san, check this out.â
âPapa, whatâs that?â Mizuha asks.
Dad grins, rummages under the cabinet, and pulls out a rusty, musty safe.
Whatâs that? Was it always there?
He sets it on the table, unlocks it, and places a photo in front of usâa woman in a red-and-black gingham-check uniform outfit, wearing glasses.
âThis!â Ayane reacts first.
âSo⊠Mom wasâŠâ
Mom covers her face, groaning, âUghhh!â
âWhatâs going on, Dad?â
âYutarou, Mizuha⊠we never told you, but Mom was an idol too.â
What?
âDaisaku! You promised to take that to the grave!â Mom snaps.
âDidnât expect Yutarou to bring home a former idol!â
What?
âNo way⊠youâre the original FuruFuruâs glasses-wearing captain, Fuji-no-Eri-san!â Ayane says.
âHow does a Reiwa girl know my name?!â Mom cries.
âFuruFuru was with Genesistarsâ agency, four generations back,â Ayane explains.
âHold on, Ayane. Whatâs this Furu-whatever?â I ask, lost.
âThere was an idol group, FRUITYĂFRUITY, nicknamed FuruFuru. Their top membersâ photos are at the agencyâs entrance. I knew Momâs face looked familiar.â
âIâm so embarrassed⊠I wanna run away,â Mom groans, her HP draining.
Mom, an idol? I had no clue.
Mizuhaâs jaw drops, her goofy face goofier.
I thought weâd shock them, but weâre the ones floored.
âSo, with Momâs secret out, looks like the Makijima familyâs getting its second ex-idol,â Dad says.
âNo way! Whyâd you keep it from us?â I demand.
âYeah!â Mizuha adds.
âEveryoneâs got secrets. You two being good-looking? Thank your idol mom,â Dad says.
Mom nods, secretly pleased.
âSo Momâs on Wuki-pedia? Thatâs wild!â Mizuha says.
âWukiâs your standard?â I retort.
Gals adapt fast.
âAlright, Ayane-chan, as a fellow ex-idol, letâs talk seriously,â Mom says, tightening the mood.
âYes, maâam.â
âIâm happy I married Daisaku, but my idol past brought him a lot of hardship. Honestly, I donât want Yutarou to go through that.â
âI-I understand,â Ayane says, looking down, biting her lip.
âAyaneâŠâ
âBut Iâd never tell you to break up. Yutarou has a duty to protect you. A guy who canât protect the girl he brings home wonât amount to much. Right, Daisaku?â
âYeah! Protect her, Yutarou!â
âDad⊠MomâŠâ
âIf youâre serious about Ayane, shield her from any backlash. Half-hearted feelings wonât cut it. Got it?â
Momâs never looked so serious.
âGot it. Thatâs my plan.â
As I say it confidently, Ayane starts crying.
âAyane, whyâre you crying?!â
âI-Iâm just⊠relieved. You saying youâll protect me⊠Iâm so happy.â
âDonât cry over that!â
I pull out a handkerchief and tissues to comfort her.
âHehe. Looks solid. Reminds me of us back then,â Mom says.
âYeah,â Dad agrees.
ââ
After Ayaneâs idol reveal and Momâs bombshell, the night grows late.
Mom and Ayane, wanting ex-idol talk, head to the tatami room in the annex.
Mom, an idol⊠Seeing her all bubbly on stage feels weird, but itâs why I exist, so I canât complain.
âMan, laughingâs got my throat dry. Mizuha, grab a beer,â Dad says.
âOkay!â
Left in the living room, Dad, Mizuha, and I talk. Mizuha brings a beer for Dad, orange juice for us, and glasses.
âLetâs toast,â Dad says.
Dad raises his beer, Mizuha and I our juice glasses. Family talk always turns to soccer.
âYutarou, that Emperorâs Cup goal was this close to offside, huh? Lucky no VAR.â
âShut up. Without that goal, I wouldnât be here.â
âHaha, kidding. Nice move beating the pros.â
Dad chugs his beer.
âHowâs Mizuha doing? Your girlsâ schoolâs a national soccer powerhouse, right? Making nationals this year?â
âProbs! Iâm the only first-year on the national team!â Mizuha brags.
Sheâs a great sister (despite the gal vibe). Back in our local sports club, she had a strong core and technique, never backing down from boys.
Her ball-stealing and field vision are better than mine.
âSomeday, Iâll defend, you score. Wanna play like that?â she says.
âYeah. If I go pro and get big enough for a retirement match, weâll do it.â
âSweet! Hurry up and go pro, Onii!â
âSure thing,â I say, acting tough for my little sister.
I want to go pro, butâŠ
âIf you go pro, join N1âs Dobel Hyogo. Big-money teamâll help Mom and Dad,â Dad says.
âNah, Tokyo Frontier or bust.â
âEast Fro? No way. Their eraâs over. Four-game losing streak,â Dad scoffs.
âYeah, Onii, ditch the East Fro fandom,â Mizuha adds.
These two⊠Theyâre brutal because theyâre Volcano Kofu fans and anti-Tokyo Frontier.
âTheir foreign coach might get sacked soon. Whoâs next?â Dad muses.
Iâve been too busy to watch, but Tokyo Frontierâs in N2âs relegation zone. A rough start and third-year coach slump might mean a change.
âIf you make it to the Emperorâs Cup third round, you might face East Fro with Koto U. But theyâll probably lose in the second,â Dad laughs.
With family split on teams, we bicker constantly, but I canât argue with Tokyo Frontierâs state.
Ugh⊠Kishihara-san, youâre in charge of strengthening. Fix thisâŠ
ââ
Yutarouâs mom leads me to the tatami annex room. Sitting on cushions, I look around.
âThis was the previous ownerâs house. The main house Daisaku built,â she says.
âPrevious owner? Didnât Yutarouâs grandparents pass down the vineyard?â
âNo, Daisaku and I, city-born, took it over when it had no heir. We wanted a quiet place to hide.â
âHide? That mustâve been tough.â
âReporters hound you post-retirement. You went through it too, right?â
âYeahâŠâ
I went overseas for a year after retiring to cool off. If Iâd stayed, I might not be here now.
âAyane-chan, I told Yutarou to protect you, but heâs got limits.â
âLimits?â
She nods sadly.
âHeâs shining now, carrying expectations after beating pros. But in high school, he faced the same pressure and struggled. It was hard to watch.â
âReally?â
âSo if he faces that again, come back here with him. Work the vineyard with us.â
âWith Yutarou⊠here?â
A slow life in Yamanashi, making grapes with YutarouâŠ
My mind drifts. Yutarou and I in work clothes, hand in hand, tending grapes for a year. Finally, we gaze at our ripe harvest.
âAyane⊠these are our grapes.â
âYeah. I was worried at first, but we did it.â
âYup.â
âYutarou?â
âUh⊠grapes are great, but maybe we should⊠work on that too.â
He blushes, holding a grape.
That⊠he meansâŠ
âTonight, maybe?â
âY-Yeah⊠be gentle.â
âŠAnd so on.
âSigh~ Too perfect.â
âAyane-chan? Your mouthâs open.â
âEek! Sorry!â
Momâs wry smile snaps me back. Did I creep her out?
âSo, what do you think?â she asks.
âThank you, but⊠I canât decide now.â
âToo soon to talk about the future, huh?â she murmurs, a bit lonely.
Does she want Yutarou back here?
âBut are you okay just following Yutarouâs path?â
âNo, Iâll follow him, butâŠâ
âBut?â
âBeing by his side makes me want to start something new.â
Since the Emperorâs Cup, Iâve had a goal in mind.
âNot returning to showbiz, right?â
âDefinitely not. I want to find a new path. Yutarouâs working so hard, protecting me, but just cooking and cheering⊠itâs not enough for the older one!â
Iâm older, so Iâve gotta lead him too.
âHehe. Yuu-chan got a great brideâŠâ
âB-Bride?!â
If I had a tail, itâd be wagging like crazy.
âNee-chan! Bath time with me!â Mizuha bursts in, sliding the fusuma open.
âMizuha! Weâre talking!â Mom scolds.
âBut I want first bath, or itâs after Papa!â
âNo way. Yuu-chanâs girlfriend canât bathe after Daisaku.â
âDadâll cry hearing that.â
Mizuha pulls me to the bath.
ââ
Heading to the bathroom, I grab clothes from my suitcase. At the main houseâs bath, Mizuha strips without hesitation, undoing her side-tails.
Her tanned skinâandâŠ
âHm? Whatâs up, Ayane-chan?â
I glance at my chest, then hers.
âMizuha-chan, youâre a first-year high schooler⊠right?â
âYup!â
ââŠâ
I touch my chest, feeling defeat.
Her casual clothes hid it, but⊠sheâs big. Smaller than Yuzu-chan, but nicely developed.
High schoolers these days are too grown.
âCome on, Ayane-chan!â
âW-Wait!â
Naked, Mizuha sneaks behind me, trying to strip me.

âąâąâą
âW-Wow⊠I just saw some national-treasure-level skin. Seriously gorgeousâŠâ
âItâs not a national treasure!â
I took off my clothes and stepped into the steamy bath with Mizuha-chan. The spacious bathroom, filled with the calming scent of wood, had a cypress tub that gave off a refined vibe.
As soon as we entered, Mizuha-chan offered to wash me first, so I took her up on it and sat in the bath chair in front of the mirror. At first, I thought Mizuha-chan was some intimidating gyaru, but sheâs surprisingly sweet. A good kid.
Since itâs just the two of us, maybe Iâll ask about YĆ«tarĆâs childhood.
âHey, Mizuha-chan.â
âHm? Whatâs up?â
âI kinda wanna hear about YĆ«tarĆ when he was younger.â
âOh, youâre curious about that, huh?â
âYup!â
âBig Bro back thenâŠâ
Mizuha-chanâs hand, moving the body sponge, paused.
ââŠHe was pretty quiet compared to now. Before he started soccer, he was always reading books.â
âB-Books!? YĆ«tarĆ!?â
âSurprising, right? Back then, Big Bro was good at sports and studies, so he was super popular with girls. But he wasnât into his classmates, you know? Guess why?â
âBecause he had a crush on the college girl next door?â
âYou knew that, Ayane-chan!? Ugh, there goes my punchline.â
So the story about his first love being a college girl was true⊠Part of me hoped it was a joke, so I feel a tiny bit jealous.
âBut yeah, even though he was cool and great at soccer, heâs always had this mentally fragile side. In his second year of high school, he ran away from soccer once. Came back home.â
ââŠYĆ«tarĆ, running away from soccer?â
âHard to believe, right? And it wasnât because âpractice was too toughâ or âI fought with a friend.â He said, âI hated myself for not living up to the coachâs expectations.â Too serious, right?â
Come to think of it, when YĆ«tarĆ met Coach Kishihara before, there was this vibe like something had happened in the pastâŠ
âBut it seems like it was just a misunderstanding with the coach, and they worked it out. When I heard Big Bro was continuing soccer in college, I was happy but also worried. Like, what if something tough enough to make him want to run away again was waiting for him?â
Thatâs⊠exactly what his mom said earlier.
âI see. You were worried about YĆ«tarĆ too, huh, Mizuha-chan?â
âYeah⊠But thanks to a dependable older girlfriend like you, Ayane-chan, heâs been able to keep going in college. So, thanks, Ayane-chan.â
ââŠMizuha-chan.â
Moved, I stood up from the bath chair and impulsively hugged Mizuha-chan.
âHey, that tickles!â
âSuch a great little sister~!â
Not just my body but my heart felt warm too.
ââ
âWeâre done with the bath!â
Ayane emerged from the bathroom with Mizuha and popped into the living room. Wearing her favorite fluffy pajamas, Ayane looked unusually cheerful, while Mizuha seemed a bit tired.
I was worried Mizuha mightâve overwhelmed Ayane, but⊠maybe Ayane was the one clinging to Mizuha?
âI put bedding for Ayane-chan in YĆ«-chanâs room, okay?â
âThank you, Mom.â
Ayane thanked my mom and walked over to me by the TV.
âAyane, head to my room first. Iâll take a bath and come up soon.â
âOkay!â
I had Ayane get ready for bed in my room while I took a quick bath and headed to my second-floor bedroom.
My roomâbeen a while.
Itâs been used as storage, but Mom cleaned it up since I was coming back.
âAyane, sorry for the waiââ
âWelcome back!â
Ayane was sprawled on one of the two futons laid out, looking at something.
âŠWait, thatâsâŠ
âThatâs my elementary school yearbook! Donât just look at it!â
âKid YĆ«tarĆ is so cute~!â
âN-No way, Iâm not cute at all. What kind of filter are you using?â
âOh? Thereâs a graduation essay tucked in here too.â
Without my permission, Ayane opened the essay booklet and flipped through it. Well, itâs probably nothing major, so whatever.
âClass 6-2, Makishima YĆ«tarĆ, Future Dreamââ
What did I write back then? I barely remember. By sixth grade, I was already playing soccer, so probably something safe like âsoccer playerâ?
âBecome a pro soccer playerââ
Yup, as expected.
ââand marry an older beauty.â
I probably wrote that thinking of my first crush, that college girl⊠Man, kid me was such a precocious brat. What kind of stuff-ra essay is this!?
âWow, YĆ«tarĆ, youâve already achieved one dream!â
ââŠCome to think of it, you are older than me.â
âHey, thatâs mean! Iâm a proper older sister! Come on, lean on me more!â
âThatâs got nothing to do with it right now.â
Ayane sat up straight and patted her thighs, peeking out from her fluffy hot pants.
âWhatâs that for?â
âEar cleaning. Big sister privilege.â
âEar cleaning?â
Ayane proudly held up a bamboo ear pick.
âI borrowed it from your mom~â
âDonât borrow stuff like thatâŠâ
âWhen I did, she was grinning like crazy.â
I could picture Momâs smug face handing it over. Ugh, Iâm gonna get teased tomorrow.
But I gave in to temptation and rested my head on Ayaneâs soft, smooth thighs.
In my heart, I thought, I could sleep on these every dayâŠ
Looking up, I saw a national-treasure-level beauty. Is this heaven?
Ayane carefully worked the ear pick.
With daily practices and lectures, lifeâs been hectic, but this moment let me forget it all, pure relaxation.
âPhew~â
Her sweet breath occasionally tickled my ear, making my lower half tingle with excitement.
âWhoa, YĆ«tarĆ, youâre getting that excited just from a puff in your ear?â
âYeah, totally. Itâs thrilling. Do it more.â
âW-What? Deny it a little, you dummy!â
Hearing Ayaneâs flustered voice for the first time in a while felt great. She teases but canât handle a counter.
âHey, Ayane. Did you talk properly with Mom?â
âYeah⊠We talked a lot about the future, and I⊠I wanna try harder too.â
âI seeâŠâ
âBy the way, I canât believe your mom is the FuruFuru Eri-san. Another former idol around you besides me. And a relative, no less.â
I havenât told Ayane, but thereâs actually a thirdâMIZUKI-san, who I met at that mixer. Am I destined to meet former idols or something?
âLetâs take it easy tomorrow and do some Yamanashi sightseeing.â
âI want pancakes with grapes on them!â
âUgh⊠No more pancakesâŠâ
âNo way!â
Whereâd her cool older sister vibe go?
Just then, my phone pinged with a notification.
From Azaki.
Azaki: You on a trip or something? Had something to deliver in person.
Seems he came by my apartment.
Something to deliver? Probably another sleazy nightlife how-to book.
âWhatâs up, YĆ«tarĆ?â
âAzakiâs trying to drop off something dumb again.â
âHmm. Another how-to book?â
âProbably. I told him Iâm in Yamanashi and to bring it when Iâm back in Tokyo the day after tomorrow.â
âLetâs turn off the lights.â
âYeah.â
And so, Ayane and I slept side by side in my childhood roomâor so I thought.
âHm?â
Waking up early in the morning, I found Ayane in my futon, clinging to my right arm, staring at me.
âPancakes!â
Confirming I was awake, she said it with wide eyes.
âYour morning greeting is âpancakesâ? Youâre already unhinged.â
âPancakes~â
âNo hope for you.â
ââ
Waiting for Ayane at the front door, I heard her hurried footsteps.
âSorry for the wait~â
There was Ayane, in her usual glasses, a white top with a light brown cardigan, black jeans, and a black beret.
âThat beretâs cute.â
âRight? Mizuha-chan gave it to me âcause it didnât suit her~â
I felt a twinge of jealousy at how close sheâd gotten with my sister, but we left the house together.
âWorried your little sisterâs stealing me?â
ââŠNot really?â
âUgh, playing tough!â
Ayane poked my side, laughing.
âYouâre not wearing a mask today, huh?â
âItâs getting hot, and I donât want heatstroke. With the beret and glasses, Iâm fine.â
âYeah, you donât look like the dazzling Ayane Kiraboshi. No oneâd expect you here.â
KĆfu Stationâs area feels lively, but itâs still rural. If Mom can go unrecognized, Ayaneâs probably fine.
Itâs reassuring to have Mom as a precedent.
We reached the bus stop for KĆfu Station.
âIs the bus not here yet?â
âDonât underestimate rural bus schedules. Waiting tens of minutes is normal.â
âWhat!? Letâs take a taxi!â
âJust wait. Youâre so impatient.â
As I calmed Ayane down, a wrinkled hand reached between us.
Turning, I saw an unfamiliar grandma in a big straw hat pushing a walker.
âWhat a lovely young lady~ Waiting for the bus? Have some candy~â
âUhâŠâ
âSuch a sweet brother, looking out for his sister. Cherish her~â
The grandma handed Ayane a strawberry candy and shuffled off toward the fields.
âPfft! Ayane, she thought you were my whiny little sister!â
âUgh! Iâm the older sister!â
Ayane was all worked up during the wait.
ââ
We were supposed to stroll around KĆfu Station together⊠but.
âHey, Big Bro! Letâs get hyped!â
An interloper tagged along while we waited for the bus.
My sister, dressed like a K-pop girl in a crop top, leather jacket, and miniskirtâhardly rural attire.
âHey, Ayane-chan! Weâre hitting a cafĂ© for pancakes, right?â
âYup!â
We sat in the back of the nearly empty bus, Ayane in the middle.

                      âąâąâą
As I glanced at Ayane chatting with Mizuha, Ayane caught my eye, gave a knowing look, and suddenly grabbed my hand.
âWhoo, so lovey-dovey~ By the way, how far have you and Ayane-chan gone? Already doing all sorts of stuff~?â
âDonât tease your brother like that. Itâs not like what youâre imaginingâŠâ
I tried to brush it off smoothly, but Ayane, sitting next to me, was inexplicably blushing bright red.
âHey, Ayane, donât let it show on your face.â
âIâm not!â
âOhh, total understanding. Sorry, I underestimated you, Big Bro.â
âNo, I mean, itâs not not true, but⊠itâs different!â
Even my face started heating up.
ââ
The bus stopped at the stationâs rotary.
KĆfuâs streets at noon were as laid-back as ever. Unlike Tokyo, there were no skyscrapers or waves of peopleâjust a calm vibe.
We switched to another bus and arrived at the café Ayane wanted to visit. It was an organic café with lots of plants, giving off a nature-like atmosphere.
There were terrace seats, so we sat there to eat while enjoying the natural scenery.
Ayane immediately ordered pancakes, I got a hamburger plate, and Mizuha, without hesitation, ordered the most expensive parfait.
âThanks for the treat, Big Bro~â
âThis girlâŠâ
âOh, right! Since Iâm here, Iâll take a pic of you and Ayane-chan.â
Mizuha pulled out her heavily decorated phone and snapped a photo of us sitting side by side.
âSend that to my Lime too~â
âGot it~â
âSighâŠâ
When the limited-edition pancakes arrived, Ayane forgot to take photos and dove in, humming with delight.
âPancakes after so long. Happiness.â
âYou eat them all the time.â
Three small pancakes were topped with mint leaves, kiwi, raspberries, and heaps of Yamanashi grapes.
âThese are rice flour pancakes, apparently. All the fruits are delicious!â
Basking in the pleasant breeze on the terrace, Ayane savored her pancakes while taking in the natural view.
âYutarou, say âahhâ~â
âUgh, donât do embarrassing stuff like that.â
âYou never complain when Mizuha-chanâs not around~â
âHuh, really? Big Broâs such a baby~â
Damn it. It feels like Iâm the only one getting embarrassed hereâŠ
Reluctantly, I let Ayane feed me a bite of pancake.
ââŠThis is good.â
Having been dragged to countless cafĂ©s by Ayane, my palateâs gotten annoyingly refined, but these pancakes were on another level. The dough wasnât heavy, perfectly fluffy, and paired flawlessly with the fresh fruitâs juices.
The fruits shone, but the pancakes held their ownâlike Azaki, in a wayâŠ
His annoying face popped into my head.
âNah, never mind.â
âHey, whatâre you guys doing after this?â
âWe were gonna decide at the cafĂ©, but Ayane, anywhere you wanna go?â
âTakeda Shrine! We gotta boost your luck for victory, Yutarou!â
âTakeda Shrine, huh⊠Nice.â
Takeda Shrine, dedicated to Takeda Shingen, holds memories from my middle school days. Itâs said to grant luck in victory and wealth, and with the Emperorâs Cup second round coming up, I could use the boost.
âMizuha, youâve got Inter-High soon. Come with us.â
âEhh, a shrine? Iâll go if we can hit karaoke after. I wanna sing with Ayane-chan.â
âSure, sounds good!â
âHeck yeah!â
That was Mizuhaâs plan all along, wasnât it?
We headed to Takeda Shrine.
Crossing the divine bridge and climbing the stairs, we bowed at the torii gate before entering.
âActually, I came here for a shoot during my idol days. I always thought, if I came to Yamanashi, Iâd visit to pray for your victory, Yutarou.â
âReally? I thought your head was only full of pancakes.â
âP-Pancakes are important, but⊠I think about you more!â
âYeah, right.â
Mizuha, overhearing us from behind, stopped walking.
âYou two are so lovey-dovey, I might puke up that parfait.â
âWeâre not that lovey-dovey.â
âNot realizing it makes me wanna puke even more.â
âSorry, Mizuha-chan. Weâll tone it down.â
âNo, no, keep going!â
âWhich is it?!â
It wasnât a holiday, so the shrine wasnât crowded, and we could pray right away.
ââ
After praying, we hit karaoke at Mizuhaâs request. Ayane and Mizuha sang a bunch of Genesistars songs together.
Exhausted from singing and goofing around, they fell asleep on the bus ride back.
I felt like I was babysitting two kids today.
Lately, Iâve been staring up at city skyscrapers, so this wasnât bad.
With them asleep, I got bored and gazed at the electronic display at the front of the bus.
Next stopâŠ
Crap, Iâm dozing off too.
I jolted awake, rubbed my eyes, and blinked.
If I fall asleep, weâll end up at the final stop.
Just as I looked back at the display, it switched to news.
Tokyo Frontier, coach sacked.
ââŠ!?â
The text scrolled across the screen.
Coach sacked!?
And as interim coachâ
I rubbed my eyes again and read.
Interim coach: Kishihara from the development department to take over.
âWhatâŠâ
ââ
âSasaki-san, youâre a great cook! Itâs as good as Erikaâs.â
âRight? Ayane-chan will make a great wife.â
âAw, you and Mom are such flatterers~â
Dinner with the family.
Dad and Mom donât knowâAyaneâs cooking is amazing, but the quantity is insane.
Only Mizuha and I saw it.
The way Ayane casually bought a mountain of ingredients at the supermarket on the way back.
âBig Bro, Ayane-chan was super efficient, but the amount was crazy, right?â
Mizuha, sitting to my left, whispered so Ayane, on my right, wouldnât hear.
âThereâs five of us today, so I made three times the usual amount. Dig in!â
Dad nodded with a smile, unaware of the mountain of leftovers in the fridge.
Get ready for days of potato salad and stew, Dad.
âBy the way, Yutarou, seems Kishiharaâs the next coach for Tokyo Frontier.â
âYeah, looks like itâŠâ
I mustâve looked down, because Ayane peered at me with concern.
âIsnât this a chance for you, Yutarou? Kishiharaâs been to all your recent matches. He might call you up to the pros.â
âTokyo Frontier already has his star pupil, Makoto Kida. No way heâd call me.â
âKida⊠the guy whose jersey you lent me?â
âYeah.â
Makoto Kida, Tokyo Frontierâs ace forward, won nationals under Coach Kishihara in high school alongside Shiratake Takanotsume. A genius.
The forward I admiredâŠ
âThen, Yutarou, you know what you have to do, right?â
Dadâs words lit a fire under me, and I turned to Ayane.
âSorry, Ayane. I wanted to stay longer, but I wanna head back to Tokyo tomorrow morning.â
ââŠFigures.â
Ayane said, showing me her phone screen.
âI booked tonightâs bus. You want to do extra practice in the morning, right?â
âAyaneâŠâ
I wanted to hug her right there, family watching and all, but I held back.
âYou and Ayane-chan are practically an old married couple.â
âFind a boyfriend you click with like that.â
âThatâs mean to say to a girlsâ school kid like me.â
Mizuha pouted.
âAnyway, Dad, Mom, weâre heading back tonight.â
âAlright.â
âGood luck, YĆ«-chan.â
I nodded firmly.
ââ
Just one day, but it was nice to relax.
After packing, Dad drove me and Ayane to the station.
As we got out, Dad opened the car window and leaned out.
âYutarou⊠If you make it to the third round of the Emperorâs Cup, youâll face Kishihara⊠Win and pay him back.â
âYeah. Iâm gonna crush Coach Kishihara⊠and Tokyo Frontier.â
Dad waved to me and Ayane before driving off.
Good luck with the stew and potato salad, Dad.
âYutarou, the bus is almost here.â
âTime to say goodbye to YamanashiâŠâ
âIt was so chill⊠Maybe we should visit a vineyard next time.â
âHuh?â
Ayane and I boarded the highway bus.
Next time might be summer break.
Iâd love to watch Mizuhaâs Inter-High qualifiers, but I probably wonât make it.
Yamanashi, huh.
ââŠCome to think of it, why did we come to my parentsâ place?â
âHuhâŠ?â
I hadnât even thought about it, but when I muttered that, Ayaneâs eyes widened.
âOh!â
Our voices overlapped.
âPermission to live together!!â
Weâd forgotten the whole pointâgetting permission to live togetherâand headed back to Tokyo.
