Vol 3 Ch 13
Chapter 13 ◆◆ My Adorable Wife Is Perfect at Official Duties!!!
♦♦♦
The first day of Crown Prince Arios’s official visit.
Shitoen and I were waiting just outside the mansion’s front entrance for the carriage to arrive.
The rain that had been falling since morning finally stopped after noon. The sky wasn’t perfectly clear, but the light cloud cover showed a pale blue, and the sunlight felt especially pure.
Maybe the wind blew away the rain clouds and all the humidity, because there was already a distinct scent of early autumn in the air.
“You’re not cold, Shitoen?”
“I’m fine. Since autumn is coming closer, I guess I won’t get to wear the glass earrings Prince Saryu gave me until next year.”
She muttered that sadly, then squinted her eyes and turned her gaze to the carriage handlers.
“Are you sure you’re not pushing yourself too hard? You could just come to the dinner with the Crown Prince and his wife and skip everything else, y’know?”
I bent down slightly and asked her again, standing beside her.
After all, it’s not just Crown Prince Arios coming now—there’s also Meil, the one involved in Shitoen’s broken engagement.
“Thank you for worrying about me.”
Shitoen smiled despite my concern.
Today she wore a pink dress.
The waist was slightly high, with the skirt spreading out softly. The puffed lace sleeves suited her perfectly.
This summer she’d worn the earrings I’d given her many times, but today she complemented her look with pearl earrings and a matching necklace.
“With Prince Saryu here, I’m a hundred times stronger♡”
She clasped both fists, grinning mischievously.
…I’m doomed!
She’s unbearably cute…
“But hey, if anything happens, just signal me right away, m’kay, Lady Shitoen?”
From behind, Rose twisted her body between me and Shitoen and butted in.
She wasn’t in her usual girly clothes, but dressed in men’s attire, which made me double-take.
Her makeup was different, and with freckles painted on, I almost thought some kid had snuck in.
Her long hair was bundled up and stuffed under a cap, making her head look round, almost like a flat cap. Well, that actually gave off a neat apprentice vibe.
In fact, that outfit she wore was a knight trainee uniform.
She was acting as Raul’s attendant.
Her age fit, she was lively, and sometimes Raul would scold her, though it was unclear if she was acting or genuine.
Actually, not just Raul, but many of the group looked at Rose and Monet harshly.
I think that’s inevitable, and I’m amazed they just accept her being around.
Monet and Rose understand the situation, so they don’t stir up trouble—they’re calm.
This time, the men’s clothes surprisingly helped ease perceptions.
Especially Rose.
In her attendant outfit, trailing after Raul seriously and getting the work done, she gave off the impression of a ‘motivated young boy’—even if everyone knew she was just a girl in disguise.
She was surprisingly popular, treated like one of the boys, way more than when she wandered around as a girl… though she seemed unhappy about that.
“Lady Shitoen, don’t push yourself too hard, okay?”
Monet, who was standing just behind, leaned in and whispered gently to Shitoen.
Her man’s clothes were basically perfect.
You’d be shocked at how flawlessly she pulled off the knight uniform considering her big chest. She twisted her long, thick hair around and pinned it at the nape.
Somehow, I could really believe such a beautiful long-haired guy might actually exist.
Because of that, the group gave her normal chores and even physical work.
They’d talk and then remember with laughs, “Oh yeah, this one’s a girl.”
She was holding something at her side now but once the carriage arrived, she’d pull the official hat down low.
I saw it just moments ago—it covered half her face.
That way, no one would suspect a thing.
“Yes! When the time comes, please take care of us, Monet-san, Rose-chan.”
Shitoen smiled at them, and even Monet, not just Rose, melted into smiles…
Amazing. In the end, isn’t Shitoen the strongest one here…?
As I thought that, the sound of iron gates opening came from afar, hoofbeats and wheels grew louder.
The Crown Prince Arios party had arrived.
They had come to the royal palace a few hours earlier.
As scheduled, they first greeted His Majesty, then came to my mansion.
Since my mansion is inside the castle, they could have walked as a stroll, but because the rain just stopped and Meil might be a target, I requested they use carriages.
A team of horsemen followed three carriages, led by a two-horse carriage at the front from the gate.
The leading carriage slowed gently and stopped where the handlers always waited.
White horses pulled a carriage mainly decorated in white and silver.
Somehow… it fit the man called Arios perfectly.
Completely different from my simple style.
If anything, His Majesty might choose something like a war chariot.
One of the butlers placed a footstool, and Raul opened the carriage door.
The first to step out was Crown Prince Arios.
His crisp military uniform, fitting the season… was white, too.
Dude, planning a trip to the snow mountains? Or is he actually navy?
Well, whatever. Handsome guys pull off any outfit.
If I pointed this out, they’d think I was jealous.
Arios stepped down the footstool, then reached out to escort the next passenger.
It was Meil.
“So, she’s here…”
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
Shitoen was beside me, giving a strained smile.
She was all fired up or something—Meil’s curls were crazy tight.
Her dress had a big low neckline, and the skirt flared out wide.
Lots of ribbons and lace… it was definitely a youthful design, I guess…
I wondered if it didn’t get in the way when she moved.
“What’s with that huge pink diamond on her chest? So tacky.”
“For someone so young, right?”
Rose and Monet whispered behind us, and looking closely, sure enough, a big pink diamond was stuck in Meil’s cleavage.
…I kinda get what Monet and Rose meant.
The balance was off… that size was ridiculous.
“Prince Saryu, the Chancellor.”
Shitoen whispered, and my gaze shifted to the last person stepping off the carriage.
Totally different vibe from the others.
Must be in his fifties. Slim, but not skinny to a fault.
Wearing a dark green tailcoat, crimson tie, jet-black trousers, and polished leather shoes.
No extras, just a single medal’s jewel shining on his chest.
Once the Chancellor had stepped off, a butler respectfully gestured toward us, and Raul led Crown Prince Arios, Meil, and then the Chancellor this way.
“Thank you for the long journey.”
Well, I guess it’s my turn to be the first to speak.
Arios laughed more casually than before, giving me a polite bow.
“I’m grateful for the special consideration given at the apology ceremony. Today I’ve come to express my thanks in person.”
Then he looked gently at Shitoen and smiled.
“Shitoen, thank you for handling things so graciously then.”
“Not at all. Thank you kindly.”
Shitoen bowed deeply before speaking.
Thinking about it… this relationship—former fiancés…
No, I’m Shitoen’s husband now!!!!
No matter who he is, good-looking young prince from a neighboring country or not!
I am Shitoen’s husband!
As I told myself firmly, I felt a sharp gaze.
Curious, I turned my head toward it.
It was Meil.
She looked excited, almost like she was waiting for something…
Ah! Is this her waiting for me to say something!?
Hey, she actually learned to wait properly, huh.
“Miss Meil, thank you for the long journey. You must be tired?”
“I wish continued good health to Prince Saryu, Your Highness!”
Looks like she learned Tidros’ language.
And she’s mastering curtseys, too!
…Poor tutors from Luminous Kingdom… I’ve never met them but I’m seriously impressed…
Meil then curtsied to Shitoen as well.
But the moment she looked up—
“Shitoen-sama! Long time no see~! Hai!”
She threw her arms wide open, making me freeze.
Wait, what? A hug?
Glancing at Crown Prince Arios, I saw him fondly watching Meil.
“Hey, can I just kill her?”
“You’ll want to erase her, right?”
Rose and Monet stuck close behind me, whispering threats, which made Shitoen quickly respond to Meil.
“Long time no see, Miss Meil.”
She’s hugging her. Hugging Meil…
So kind… Shitoen’s so kind…

Ah, no no! This kind of thing might stress Shitoen out!
“Chancellor, I believe this is our first meeting. I am Saryu Tidros, Third Prince of Tidros Kingdom.”
I cleared my throat grandly, signaling my turn was over to Meil, and greeted the Chancellor.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Meil reluctantly separate from Shitoen and return to Crown Prince Arios. Jeez.
“I sincerely apologize for troubling Prince Saryu. Thanks to him, we received pardon from King Tania, and I can’t express how grateful I am.”
The Chancellor put a clenched fist to his chest and bowed deeply. I felt humbled.
“Though many things happened… King Tania’s forgiveness was a generous act hoping for future relations. Shitoen is doing well now, so please don’t mind…”
I couldn’t say “don’t care,” but I hoped they really understood.
“Chancellor, long time no see. I apologize deeply for not contacting you since our farewell.”
When Shitoen spoke, the Chancellor lowered his eyes and shook his head.
“No apologies necessary. It is I who should continue apologizing for my own rudeness.”
“It’s a great honor. I’m safely spending my days with the Tidros royal family. Please keep well, Chancellor.”
Yet still, he did not raise his face.
His stubbornness left Shitoen and me a little puzzled.
“Excuse me, Master. Everyone has disembarked.”
The head butler approached softly and told me.
The other maids and attendants from the carriages had also gotten ready and stepped down.
“Though it’s not much, please relax in my home until the dinner starts.”
I deliberately brightened the mood with those words.
I’d asked Eton to handle the maids and attendants from the Luminous Kingdom, so they should be waiting inside.
The head butler quietly opened the front door.
“You honor me.”
Crown Prince Arios smiled warmly, and Meil, who held his arm, beamed with joy, so I felt relieved.
Shitoen and I led the way inside, and all the maids gathered in the hall bowed in unison to greet the Luminous party.
“Wow, so huge!”
I heard Meil’s voice, and before I noticed, she had quickly moved to stand beside Shitoen.
“Do you live here with Prince Saryu?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Ehh, kinda plain, isn’t it? Don’t you style it to your taste, Shitoen-sama? If it were me, I’d make it way more my style!”
I felt the tense throbbing veins in the temples of the maids and butlers standing by.
Both Shitoen and I were flustered by Meil’s words.
“I like it as it is. Very refined, and the vases decorated here are made with”—
“Ah! Okay, okay!”
Meil cut off Shitoen and pouted, glaring at me.
“I bet Prince Saryu wouldn’t let you, huh? Poor Shitoen-sama.”
“This mansion was given to me by His Majesty after I graduated from the Army Academy. The furnishings and furniture layout were all arranged by the staff to suit my convenience and tastes. I don’t like anything gaudy. Elegance lies in simplicity.”
I said firmly to Meil.
The butlers and maids looked ready to applaud me for that.
“Hmph… So, it’s ‘poor’ then?”
“Tea! Prepare tea quickly! Don’t slack off!”
If I didn’t shout out instructions and encouragement, the staff would collapse from exhaustion all over the place!
Raul! You too, don’t kneel on the floor!
“P-Prince Arios! You already greeted His Majesty, right!?”
I took preemptive action before Meil could say more nonsense.
“Yeah. I just had an audience. I thanked them again for sending Prince Saryu and Shitoen to the apology ceremony.”
“Right. After this, the Crown Prince and his wife will hold a dinner party. Let’s put the apology ceremony aside for now and enjoy the food.”
“I’m looking forward to Tidros cuisine, of course, but meeting the Crown Prince couple is the best part for me. Since we’ll both lead our countries going forward, I hope for many lessons and insights. Will you, Prince Saryu, help me out?”
“Of course.”
I answered, though inside I was insanely thrilled.
Being able to have a normal conversation with Crown Prince Arios!!!!
When we first met, he only cared about himself.
The country and politics were second to his feelings, and his judgment was based entirely on likes and dislikes.
Finally, he seemed to have gained awareness as Crown Prince, having opinions appropriate for his position.
“Miss Meil has studied Tidros language quite well. Impressive.”
“It was tough~! Shitoen-sama!”
Seriously, Shitoen, you’re way too kind!
Even though she’s nervous about talking, Meil was stomping her feet on the spot. Stop it! You’re kicking up dust!
Then Meil went on endlessly about “how strict the Luminous tutors are,” tearfully appealing, with Shitoen quietly listening.
I nervously led everyone to the guest room the head butler showed us, asking them to sit on the sofas and chairs.
“…Raul.”
“Yes, understood.”
Something felt off like this.
Normally, the seats would split between Arios, Meil, and the Chancellor on one side, and me and Shitoen on the other.
But Meil happily linked arms with Shitoen and sat next to her, so the three guys awkwardly looked for seats along the sofa, silently feeling each other out.
…This is…
The three guys sitting side-by-side on the sofa…?
But… doesn’t that make conversation hard? We’re not lovers. Wouldn’t it be better to face each other?
And if so… who sits in the middle of those three?
Me?
Me, stuck between Crown Prince Arios and the Chancellor?
And expected to keep talking until dinner?
No way!!!
But if it’s me, Arios, and the Chancellor sitting together, the Chancellor will end up alone. They’ve been silent since entering the mansion. They’ll be silent from here on too, right!?
While pondering the seating order, Raul gave instructions to the butler to remove the three-person sofa.
They quickly replaced it with three separate single sofas and set the table in the center, avoiding trouble.
“S-sorry for the trouble. Please, after you.”
“No, thank you.”
“Much obliged.”
I confirmed Crown Prince Arios and the Chancellor nervously sitting down and finally relaxed to take my own seat.
My gaze suddenly met Shitoen’s.
Shitoen lowered her eyebrows and silently mouthed, in Tania, “Good work today,” with an apologetic look. So kind…!
“Huh? Where’s Idi?”
After the head butler, a butler, and a maid left the room, Meil started looking around restlessly.
In the room, there was me, Crown Prince Arios, the Chancellor, Meil, and Shitoen. Then there were Raul, and the two merchant sisters Monet and Roze disguised as men, standing quietly in the corner.
“Idi isn’t here?”
Meil gripped Shitoen’s hand, her eyes trembling with anxiety.
Shitoen gently returned the grip and quietly asked,
“Who is this Idi person?”
“She’s my maid, but…”
“Right. The maid and attendant is Eton… Shitoen’s maid is in the next room attending to guests.”
I explained, and Meil, still unsettled, snuggled closer to Shitoen.
“Sorry about that. Idi is like a mother figure to Meil… Meil, it’s alright. You’re safe here.”
After speaking to me, Crown Prince Arios smiled gently to calm Meil down.
I exchanged glances with Raul by the wall.
Meil really is being targeted, and she seems quite aware of it.
“There are three knights here, so you’re safe.”
Feeling sorry for her, I joined in to reassure.
Being born in a royal family means you’re at risk of assassination from the moment you pop out.
It’s all about interests and succession. If something about your bloodline threatens someone, that’s game over.
That’s why blood relatives either unite tightly or isolate themselves.
Meil isn’t royal, so she probably never thought about such things and just dreamed.
That the crown prince she loved would choose her, throwing away a fiancé arranged by his parents.
Like a storybook romance.
Marrying the beloved crown prince, giving birth to their precious child, building a happy family.
That must have been all she wished for.
But reality was different.
Harsh training to be a crown princess, a tense life where her life was always in danger.
She was probably just starting to wake up from that dream.
“All the knights here are ones I’ve approved. There are some trainees, but their skills are solid and they’re tight-lipped. You can relax.”
I glanced briefly at Raul and the others.
Raul gave a polite nod, followed by Roze and Monet mimicking him.
“Kyaa~♪ The knights of Tidros are all so cool! Like actors! They should wear even cooler clothes! Should I pick them out for you!?”
“No, thanks!”
I answered quickly to the suddenly revived Meil.
Worrying about you was a waste of time!!
“Miss Meil, would you like some tea? How about sugar or milk?”
Shitoen, trying to distract her, pointed at the tea set in front of them. Meil quickly perked up and replied, “Two sugars! Lots of milk too!” Jeez.
Casting a side glance at Meil chatting happily with Shitoen, I turned to Crown Prince Arios, who nodded with a serious expression and spoke.
“There have been several dangerous incidents in recent months. Right now, I’m making her avoid going out altogether.”
“Do you have any suspects?”
I thought he wouldn’t speak to me, but to my surprise, Crown Prince Arios nodded firmly.
“Then we can respond accordingly.”
I expected him to say they already had countermeasures, but Arios hesitated a little.
What came to mind was the apology ceremony.
When he gave info about the assassination on Shitoen, he said, “My strength is still insufficient.”
Even though he’s aware, he can’t prevent the attempts. Worse, his own fiancé is targeted.
It sure sounds like a pretty unstable kingdom.
“During this visit to the Tidros Kingdom, I intend to prove I am truly the crown prince of the Luminous Kingdom. I will strive so everyone acknowledges I have the power worthy of that status.”
His eyes fixed firmly on the Chancellor of his own country.
“His Highness Arios is always pushing himself to improve, truly admirable. This is the shining crown prince of our country. I, the Chancellor, know best that he will bear the future and solidify Luminous’s standing.”
The Chancellor bowed modestly.
Yet Arios’s eyes, fixed on the Chancellor, were sharp and clear.
…Though he says this, I wonder if the Chancellor looks down on him.
In fact, the Chancellor shows no expression when praising Arios, instead hiding his face.
If he hides his expression, might this man be involved in the assassination attempt on Shitoen?
I had been watching the two restlessly, but when Arios’s gaze met mine, the Chancellor forced a smile.
“The tea you kindly prepared. Shall we have some, Chancellor?”
“Yes, Your Highness Crown Prince Arios.”
…I should’ve asked my eldest brother more about the internal affairs of Luminous.
Just as I was clicking my tongue in my heart, Meil exclaimed, “Oh, that’s right!”
“This pink diamond? Crown Prince Arios bought it for me!”
She happily pinched the large diamond, showing it to Shitoen.
“It’s lovely. As expected of Crown Prince Arios. It suits you perfectly, Miss Meil.”
Shitoen held her cup with both hands, enjoying the aroma as she replied.
“Right? But I haven’t had many chances to wear it since I couldn’t go out much… So today, I dressed up as much as I could!”
“Like I said earlier, I’ve set up thorough security here. Relax.”
“Thank you! That’s why I love Prince Saryu so much~! Ah! Of course, I love Crown Prince Arios the most for inviting me on such occasions! So don’t worry, Shitoen-sama!”
Even Shitoen was smiling awkwardly.
I was too dumbfounded to say anything. She seems like she’s going to live no matter what happens…
“Hey, can I see the garden then!? I want to take a walk!”
“Huh!? The garden!?”
Suddenly Meil jumped to her feet.
I panicked, looking at Raul.
Of course Raul was also confused.
Well, there are knights posted in the garden too, and this is inside the royal castle. It shouldn’t be dangerous…
“Just a little! Just a quick stroll! Because every time we go somewhere, it’s by carriage. It feels like I’m just confined and moved around!”
Tears welled up in Meil’s eyes.
“And it’s been nothing but Tidros language all the time. I want to talk with Shitoen-sama in Luminous language or Caravan common tongue…”
“Meil…”
Crown Prince Arios muttered, looking troubled again…
“I’ll guide you. I’ll accompany you.”
Look, Shitoen said that!
I felt like ripping my hair out and ordered the three by the wall.
“Raul and Ro—I mean! Um, Roro and Monmon, go on guard duty too!”
Since I hadn’t decided fake names for Monet and Roze, I blurted out whatever came to mind. They looked puzzled.
Can’t help it! Don’t expect me to have good taste!
Roze muttered quietly, “No taste.” Geez, you!
“Well then, let’s take a short walk.”
“Yay! I love Shitoen-sama!”
Shitoen invited them in Luminous language, moving toward the door leading to the garden.
“Come on, Roro and Monmon!”
Holding back laughter, Raul led the serious-faced Roze and Monet behind Shitoen and Meil.
Watching the group hurriedly head to the garden, I sipped my tea and sighed, looking at Crown Prince Arios.
“Is the engagement coming soon?”
“I recently got my father’s unofficial approval. Now we just need the ministers officially on board.”
“Well, it’ll work out somehow. Miss Meil is trying her best too. You’ll probably get the Tidros language down.”
“She could already speak Caravan common tongue. Now she’s working on Tidros. I’m grateful she’s living up to those expectations. That… Prince Saryu.”
“Yeah?”
Just as I swallowed my tea, I tilted my head.
Crown Prince Arios held his cup as if warming his hands and looked at me steadily.
“I know I’m being presumptuous… but I want us to keep getting along.”
“Of course.”
Though I don’t know if we can truly get along, we’re both royalty. We have to endure for the sake of our countries.
“After this, I plan to deepen friendship with Crown Prince Leonias too, but above all, I trust you. Your words, attitude, and swordsmanship. You’re truly genuine.”
I slowly observed the Chancellor at those powerful words.
That phrase.
Though addressed to me, it felt like it was meant for the Chancellor too.
“I’m grateful. Watching Crown Prince Arios at the apology ceremony changed my impression. He’s a man who can get things done. We both have our countries to care for. Likewise.”
Well… since he’s praising me, I carefully gave some praise in return.
Crown Prince Arios looked relieved and smiled at the Chancellor.
“Prince Saryu’s generosity is admirable. Don’t you agree, Chancellor?”
“Indeed, completely. This Chancellor is impressed. Not only in bravery but in a broad acceptance of everything.”
The Chancellor bowed deeply to me.
“With this, the future of Tidros and Luminous is secure. We ask for your continued support.”
“What are you saying? Same here.”
Bowing to the Chancellor, I thought they were basically getting married when Shitoen and the others came back.
“The garden was so lovely! Crown Prince Arios, let’s make a garden and pond at our new home too!”
Meil sat on the sofa in high spirits, but the three guards who followed in were exhausted.
…What happened in such a short time? They look more worn out than when they were attacked by bandits…
Raul and the others joined the wall again, moving slowly.
After chatting a bit about the garden, Meil turned her big eyes to the table.
“Shitoen-sama! These macarons are beautiful!”
Meil pointed at the macarons on the cake stand the maid had brought earlier, her voice bright.
This girl’s brain must be directly wired to her mouth.
“Shall I serve them?”
Smiling warmly, Shitoen divided the sweets onto plates, offering some to Crown Prince Arios and the Chancellor.
These sweets were from a pastry shop in the royal capital that Shitoen especially liked.
We had sneaked out a few times to go there, eating in the café space or buying takeout.
“So tasty~♡”
Meil ate a macaron, cupping her cheek and making a fuss.
Before me was a blueberry tart chosen by Shitoen.
Crown Prince Arios had a cupcake topped generously with whipped cream and raspberry jam.
The Chancellor was served a scone with butter, because “I heard you’re not very fond of sweets.”
Wonderful…
My wife is wonderful enough to be proud of anywhere…
“I’m deeply honored you remembered. Thank you.”
The Chancellor bowed deeply to Shitoen, elegantly cut into the scone, spread the butter, and took a bite.
“Delicious. Also, Tidros sweets are elegant and delicate beyond anything in our country. His Highness’s cupcake is adorable, and Prince Saryu’s tart is like a work of art.”
“I want to bring these home too! Macarons keep well, right?”
Meil asked Shitoen, who tilted her head slightly.
“I think so… But these aren’t made here in the mansion, they’re brought from a pastry shop in the royal capital. I’ll check again.”
“A pastry shop in the royal capital?”
Meil looked blank. Shitoen continued.
“Yes. At first, I liked it so much. When Prince Saryu found out, he invited me, saying, ‘Let’s go eat there together.’ Our first date was at that shop…”
Shitoen’s face turned redder and her voice quieter.
She was blushing while talking about our memories!
The way she blushed was… way too cute!
Fidgeting with her entwined fingers and loose ones. Her lips trembling slightly. When our eyes met suddenly, she tilted her head a little and smiled softly with pink cheeks.
See that, Meil? That’s real cuteness!!!!
Crown Prince Arios smiled and said, “Oh my,” while even the Chancellor relaxed his mouth, “Indeed indeed.”
LOOK——!!!!!!
Their reactions say it all!!!!!!
“I’m jealous!”
“W-what are you jealous of?!”
Meil suddenly shouted, so surprised, I reflexively asked…
“I want to go on a date in the royal capital too! I’ve never done that. Hey, Crown Prince Arios. Let’s go to that pastry shop too?”
She stood up, sat down in front of Arios, and grabbed his hand…
Crown Prince Arios must feel confused. You’re not going outside the garden…
“Meil, we’re not here to play. Wait until things settle…”
“But I’ve been cooped up all this time! I can’t take it anymore!”
That was the trigger: she started crying again, full on…
A tense atmosphere began to fill the room.
Crown Prince Arios tried to come up with an alternative plan, and Shitoen tried to distract Meil, but she just sniffled loudly.
Eventually, Shitoen sadly said, “I only started talking about the sweets…” That brat! I stood up.
“I’ll go consult with my eldest brother now. But don’t get your hopes up. If we get permission, the Luminous side will also have to handle security.”
Crown Prince Arios sighed apologetically.
I wanted to click my tongue, but I didn’t want Shitoen thinking “It’s all my fault” anymore.
“Shitoen, sorry. I’ll be back by the dinner party. Can you handle things after that?”
“Of course.”
“Raul, let’s go. What was it again? Roro and Monmon, keep guarding Shitoen!”
Ah, geez!!
When Meil comes along, nothing ever goes right!
“Haah…”
I sighed again for the umpteenth time and signed the documents Raul handed me.
“Did you read it properly!?”
Even Raul was getting annoyed.
“I read it. It’s the rental application for the conservatory we’re borrowing tomorrow, right?”
I scratched my head hard and leaned against the wall.
This was the application to use the royal family’s villa in the capital.
We submit it to the royal palace’s general affairs, and that’s how permission to use it is granted.
Earlier that day, when Meil started fussing about “I want to go on a date at the royal capital’s pastry shop!,” the entire security team, including me, went into a frenzy.
I asked my eldest brother, who frowned heavily, but ordered me to “deal with it somehow.”
So, we started planning an event to go to the pastry shop tomorrow, but…
There’s no way we can take the crown prince couple of a neighboring country—who are currently targeted—to a pastry shop.
Sure, Shitoen and I have eaten there sneakily a few times, but always with full guards.
The café seats face the street with full glass windows, and the open terrace is too exposed; it’d be hard to guard.
Luckily, Shitoen understands all that well, but Meil definitely wouldn’t.
She’d say she wants to sit in the open terrace or always on the window side inside.
Of course, our team could form a line and surround the table, but that’s not the kind of date Meil wants. It’d feel more like being watched while eating.
So we decided to use the royal family’s villa near the pastry shop and set up a temporary pastry shop there.
The villa is usually used to lodge attendants and maids who can’t stay in the palace when guests come from provinces.
It lacks the dignity to host the crown prince and his fiancé, but the conservatory there is beautiful.
The past few days of rain have cooled things down despite it being summer.
If we spread the ceiling cover and open the windows wide, it will create a nice atmosphere.
We’ll invite the pastry shop’s owner to come and set up a temporary store.
That basic plan was set by 5 PM.
After several trips by horse between the capital and the castle, we persuaded the owner—surprised to discover I was a prince—to agree to the temporary shop. Then I changed clothes back at the villa and escorted Shitoen to a dinner party at my eldest brother’s house from 7 PM.
As soon as the party ended, Raul called me for signing and reviewing the necessary documents.
“This will be the last signature. But nobody knows what could happen until the day itself, so don’t let your guard down.”
I listened to Raul’s warning with a tired, exasperated expression.
Trying not to get caught, I pretended to look around the venue and averted my eyes.
The dinner itself had ended, and now was the social gathering of my eldest brother and his wife with Crown Prince Arios’s party.
Everyone held their own glasses, some sitting on sofas, some standing like me, chatting.
“Where are Monet and Roze?”
Several members of my team were mingling with the butlers and maids, but Monet and Roze were nowhere to be seen.
“I have a feeling Meil would take a liking to them, so I intentionally placed them a little apart for now. It’d be bad if they slipped up.”
Raul shifted his gaze smoothly toward the folding doors connecting the venue and the garden.
Following his glance nonchalantly, I saw the two standing by, waiting.
“I keep them in my line of sight.”
“I see.”
“The Captain trusts those two, but I don’t yet. It’d be a disaster if they helped the thieves.”
“Geez… Such suspicion.”
“It’s natural. I’m not immortal like the Captain. Caution is everything.”
Raul almost said something but stopped, and I halted too.
That’s because Monet and Roze by the folding doors suddenly moved and signaled a knight nearby.
“I’m going to check it out.”
Raul said as much and left the room, taking one of the nearby knights with him.
While I was signaling other knights by gesture to stand by, someone called from behind, “Prince Saryu.”
I turned around calmly and saw Crown Prince Arios escorting Meil closer.
They had been chatting casually with my eldest brother and his wife not long ago, right? I looked at the sofa where Shitoen, the Chancellor, and the eldest brother’s couple were now having a pleasant conversation.
“Prince Saryu! Prince Saryu! Is the plan for tomorrow’s date all set?”
“Yeah, yeah, it’s fine.”
“Yay~♪”
Meil happily clung to my arm, which I brusquely pulled away.
I couldn’t tell her to stop or let go though.
“I’m sorry for Meil’s sake. You haven’t had much time to relax since the tea party, have you?”
Crown Prince Arios lowered his voice, and I gave a wry smile.
I told him not to worry, but he didn’t seem to feel better.
“Well, next time we visit Luminous (your country), please take good care of me.”
“Of course. I will give you a grand welcome.”
His confident words made me laugh.
Crown Prince Arios seemed to finally relax.
Just then, one of the knights waiting by the wall approached me.
“What is it?”
“Sir Raul has something.”
Looking toward the doorway, Raul was signaling me with his hand.
After excusing myself to Arios and Meil, I hurried over.
“What is it?”
Outside in the hallway, not only Raul but Monet and Roze, disguised as men, were also there.
“We heard there was someone like an intruder near the palace gate, so my sister and a knight chased after them.”
Roze spoke excitedly, and Raul took over.
“I joined quickly and caught them once, but they escaped…”
“They dropped this.”
Monet handed me a bulky handkerchief that looked like hers.
I pinched it and unfolded it…
“A mace…”
The length was from wrist to elbow, with a weighted, spiked end— a bludgeoning weapon.
This is unique to the Luminous Kingdom and is known as a weapon used by infantry to crush enemy armor.
“So the one targeting Princess Shitoen truly is someone from Luminous…”
Raul stated, but Roze looked unconvinced.
They had originally been part of the assassination squad targeting Shitoen’s life. Yet they looked suspicious about this weapon.
So, are the thieves and those targeting Shitoen different groups?
“…There are some targeting Meil now too.”
“By the way, do we really have to protect Meil? Honestly, I want to cut her loose first.”
“Roze, this is our job. But you know, accidents happen. We must never forget Shitoen is the highest priority.”
Monet didn’t defend Roze’s harsh words at all.
I couldn’t help but laugh, then took the mace from Monet along with the handkerchief.
“First, let’s report this to the eldest brother.”
I called a nearby knight and told them to form a group of five, including Monet and Roze, to patrol outside. Then I returned indoors with Raul.
Noticing a high-pitched laugh, I glanced toward Meil, Shitoen, and Yuria sitting and chatting happily on the sofa.
Shitoen caught my movement and looked like she wanted to say something, but when Meil approached her, she responded with a smile.
Looking around for my eldest brother, I saw him at the bar counter in the corner with Crown Prince Arios and the Chancellor.
Probably, after I left, the women and men split up.
The three of them leaned against the counter, each holding a glass.
“Crown Prince Leonias, just a quick word about security.”
I rarely addressed him like that, but I quietly called him, and my eldest brother silently turned.
He must have seen our expressions and understood something. Just when he was about to leave, Crown Prince Arios smoothly slid in beside him.
“If it concerns Meil, I’d like to attend as well. Would that be alright?”
He said looking me straight in the eyes…
I decided to ask my eldest brother.
“This concerns my sister-in-law too, but your fiancé is worried as well. Saryu, what happened?”
As usual, my eldest brother’s expression didn’t change.
The Chancellor stood behind Arios, seemingly listening in.
“Earlier, our team detected a disturbance and chased after the thieves. We caught one but they escaped.”
“My apologies.”
Raul bowed his head, but my eldest brother shook his head.
“No worries. You did well to drive them off. And?”
“This was dropped by the thief.”
I handed the mace I held to my eldest brother.
Arios gasped and the Chancellor’s face tightened.
No one spoke for a moment, then my eldest brother took the lead.
“…It appears to be a mace.”
“Indeed. A weapon unique to my country.”
Arios said with a bitter expression.
I noticed his fist was tightly clenched, trembling slightly.
“I’m aware there are those in my country unhappy about my choice of consort. Of course, what I did to Shitoen was shameful and endangered the country. It’s not as if the apology ceremony wiped everything away.”
I wondered why.
Though Arios spoke to me and my eldest brother…
His voice sounded like it was aimed at the Chancellor behind him.
“That’s why I must diligently build achievements. This recent incident is surely related to me. To cause such trouble for the Tidros Kingdom that kindly accepted me…”
Arios said desperately to me and my eldest brother.
“I’ll contact the home country immediately to ask for more security reinforcements. We don’t want to trouble the Tidros Kingdom…”
“No, sorry. My security plan was a bit too lax. We only avoided it thanks to my excellent knights. Sorry for troubling you, Crown Prince Arios. We appreciate your offer of reinforcements.”
Without realizing it, I cut off Arios’s words like that.
He stared blankly, and I scratched my head and turned to Raul.
“Good thing Miss Meil wasn’t harmed. That was a relief.”
“No, it’s my fault for letting them escape…”
Raul looked like he wanted to say “We’ll have a meeting later,” but was going along with me now.
Even my eldest brother interrupted.
“The Luminous and Tidros Kingdoms are neighbors. More than that, our mother and I came from the Luminous Kingdom by marriage. In a way, we’re… family.”
My eldest brother’s eyes narrowed slightly, warmth shining there, moving me.
Wow… so you can act like that…
“The enemy of Crown Prince Arios is our enemy. After all, this country has the fierce beast called the Winter Bear of Tidros.”
He chuckled softly.
“If the threat extends not only to the crown prince’s fiancée but even to Shitoen, we will crush and utterly exterminate it. Watch calmly.”
He said this with a chilling smile.
Crown Prince Arios and the Chancellor silently bowed their heads.
“Such gracious words. We have no words for the generous hearts of the Tidros royal family.”
“What are you saying? Crown Prince Arios shows earnestness which is why. Right, Saryu?”
My eldest brother was speaking only to me now, ignoring the two.
I wonder what he’s thinking, looking so pleased like, ‘This secures our advantage!’
“…Indeed.”
I said that but felt again how scary my eldest brother is.
That night.
I reviewed tomorrow’s security measures and schedule, had a meeting with the squad leaders, and returned home well past midnight.
The head butler offered me a midnight snack, but I declined and asked about Shitoen.
It seemed she was waiting for me to return, but given the next day’s engagements, even the head maid and house steward joined in persuading her to go rest early in her bedroom.
Well done, all of you. Consider Shitoen constantly under stress.
Each time, you united to let her spend time in the best way possible.
I thanked not only the head butler but also the head maid, house steward, and other servants, took a bath, and ordered a bonus “for today’s staff!” before heading to the bedroom.
“…Alright then.”
I heard Shitoen was already asleep, but it would be rude to enter without knocking, so I gently knocked three times.
No reply.
Quietly opening the door, the room was pitch black, just as I imagined.
Sneaking softly to the bed, I found Shitoen sleeping.
Feeling relieved by her cute sleeping face, I climbed the bed and slowly lifted the quilt to lie down.
The bed creaked under my weight.
Shitoen murmured, “Nn…”
Crap, I woke her! I froze instantly, but she slowly opened her amethyst-like eyes.
“Prince Saryu…? Welcome back… I’m sorry, I…”
“No, it’s okay. Good night, Shitoen.”
I spoke hurriedly.
Shitoen stretched out her smooth, pale arm and wrapped it around the back of my neck.
“Thank you for your hard work…”
She pulled me close.
She was definitely still half-asleep. Her muttering was unclear.
And then, how she hugged me…
Seriously, the way she hugged me, Shitoen!
It was crazy…!!
My face buried in the cleavage…!!!!!!
Whoa… this is bad.
This is seriously bad!
She’ll definitely fall asleep just like this!
Yet…!!
I…!!!!
My cheek is enjoying the fullness of Shitoen!

And even smelling her amazing scent!
Eh!? She uses the same soap as me!? No way! It must be different!
I want to ask the servants. What does Shitoen use!?
Honestly, I kind of want to press my face even closer to her body, though…
“Good… night…”
With the cutest, most precious “good night” on earth, Shitoen breathed deeply and slept quietly…
I understand.
I really understand.
You must never take advantage of an unconscious woman!!!!
That’s the most shameful thing!!
This…! Even though it’s killing me slowly, a man must endure!!!!
I am also the proud Winter Bear of Tidros, recognized by Lord Barimore!!!!!!
I kept telling myself that over and over… but.
Still.
This shouldn’t count as making a move.
I gently kissed Shitoen’s chest once and stayed still not to burden her arm.
I wonder if she can sleep like this.
That thought crossed my mind, but… sleep came quickly.
◇◆◇◆
I was dreaming again.
A strange garden. A building made of unfamiliar materials.
Now I was inside it.
That man, whose face I could never see clearly, was walking down a long hallway in the same outfit as last time.
Looking around, many wore navy short-sleeved shirts like him.
Some pushed silver wagon-like things and cared for what looked like injured or sick people.
The man entered a certain room.
Inside were four beds lined up, each separated by curtains.
Each bed had people of varying ages, all sitting or lying down.
Looking out the window, I was stunned. Beyond was the sky, and even taller buildings stood nearby. Could such a world exist?
No, it’s a dream. Since this is the dream world, I told myself in confusion. The man’s voice brushed my eardrum as usual.
Still unknown what language it was.
The man spoke smiling to an elderly person lying in bed.
Several tubes extended from the elderly’s body, connected to flickering square devices.
What… could that be?
Nearby was another square device showing numbers and unknown symbols flashing constantly.
“ ”
The elderly person said something, looking very worried.
The man nodded calmly several times, placed his fingers on the elderly person’s wrist, then glanced at his own wrist.
Suddenly, I noticed.
Shitoen had made a similar gesture.
When inspecting patients gathered in one place in Earl Scene’s territory, mistaken for an infectious disease, Shitoen would often do that gesture, mutter a small “Ah,” and laugh self-mockingly.
That strange laugh of hers stuck in my memory.
The man nodded again as if confirming something and spoke; the elderly person then faintly smiled, relieved.
“ !”
The room’s door opened by itself; a woman in the same clothes entered and spoke to the man.
The man lightly raised his hand in response, spoke to the elderly person, then exited to the hallway.
The woman handed the man something like a blackboard and said something hurriedly.
Judging from her expression and tone, she was probably being scolded.
The man scratched his head, took the blackboard, and started walking with the woman.
“ Opekan”
“Shichou ”
Two words I suddenly caught.
I’d heard them somewhere before. But where?
As I thought about it, the square object the woman had in her breast pocket made a sound.
For some reason, my heart skipped a beat.
A bad premonition swelled like a dark cloud, gnawing sharply at my insides, leaving me restless.
“ !?”
The woman said something, and suddenly the man took off running.
I struggled to follow him.
I’m going!
I have to go!
Because you’re…!
◇◆◇◆
“I…!”
I snapped awake, startled by my own voice.
Morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, bathing the room in a soft glow.
I lay on my back, still for a while, but my heart was pounding wildly like a fool.
My mouth was dry, and my upper body was uncomfortable and hot, like I was sweaty from sleep.
My hand, reaching out to touch my face, trembled; even I was surprised.
“Prince Saryu.”
The bed shifted slightly, and Shitoen quietly sat up enough to look down on me.
“Are you alright? You’ve been tossing and turning for a while—I was wondering what to do…”
“No… I’m fine. Sorry to wake you.”
I forced a smile, but my face must have been stiff. Shitoen looked at me with concern.
“Maybe it’s because of the fatigue. Strange dreams or something…”
Straining upward, I sat, and my back felt drenched in sweat, releasing heat as I moved; the sudden coolness was almost chilling on my skin.
“If you want, you can tell me what kind of dream it was.”
Shitoen offered gently.
I opened my mouth but couldn’t find words.
What should I call that building? How do I describe the strange materials I’d never seen?
What do I say about those tubes connected to blinking square devices?
“Ah… yeah.”
I couldn’t find the words to explain.
“It was a weird, jumbled dream… Once I sort it out, I’ll tell you.”
I dodged with those words.
Shitoen looked at me silently for a while, then knelt and hugged me tightly.
“After official duties are done, let’s go to the hot springs. We’ll relax there.”
Hot springs!!!!!!
I had completely forgotten because of the busyness—hot springs!!!!!!
Shitoen’s lingerie!!!!!!
Or rather, this position!!!!!!
My face is completely smooshed into Shitoen’s chest… smooshed!!!!!!
Another huge hit right from the morning after last night’s stimulation!!!!!!
“W-wait, sorry, Shitoen. Um, could you move away a bit…?”
“P-please forgive me! Was it hard to breathe?”
“I’ll… lie down a bit more to the side…”
“Are you feeling unwell!?”
No, it’s just because I can’t show my lower half…
Please leave me alone for a while…
Also, you. Your chest is too exposed…
◇◇◇◇
The afternoon of the second day after Crown Prince Arios’s party arrived.
We were at the royal capital’s separate villa.
I had asked the pastry owner to ‘make the hall a temporary shop somehow,’ and the result exceeded expectations.
Though he said he couldn’t bring a showcase, a signboard with the shop’s name was on the wall, and every cake type was laid out on the tables.
Above all, the moment we entered, the scent was amazing. A sweet aroma tickled the nose, blended with vanilla, cinnamon, and other spices—this was truly a pastry shop.
In fact, Shitoen smiled immediately after entering, saying, “It really feels like we’ve come to a shop.”
Meil seemed delighted with the servers’ professional smiles.
Raul confirmed their identities just in case. They were the same servers we had seen many times during Shitoen and my secret dates—definitely not temporary hires, which was reassuring.
“Wow… I still can’t believe you’re a prince.”
While Shitoen, Meil, and Crown Prince Arios happily chose among the cakes, I was by the wall coordinating with Raul on security. The shop owner approached and said that.
“Sorry for imposing today. I’ll buy everything here and cover the temporary shop fees…”
I glanced at Raul, who slid over to whisper the price into the owner’s ear and handed over a paper bag.
The owner frowned suspiciously after checking inside.
“Is this really okay?”
“Yeah. That includes a bribe for silence. Nobody must know who came here today—or about the building’s structure.”
I held up one finger, and the owner nodded cautiously.
“Promise I won’t get killed as soon as I leave here?”
“Haha, you won’t get killed. Just serve the goods and leave. My team will escort you to the door. You don’t have to clean up or come back.”
We can’t have unrelated people dragged into trouble here.
Formally, the servers will do the first serving, then Eton will take over.
“Well then, I’ll leave once you’ve chosen your items.”
The owner waved lightly and stepped away.
A little distance away, the Chancellor inspected the sweets with interest.
Near the table with the cakes, Meil was asking the servers some questions.
Shitoen and Crown Prince Arios had probably already decided on orders, smiling happily while engaging with Meil.
“Ugh… I really hate that woman.”
I turned on hearing the bitter voice and saw Monet and Roze standing nearby without me noticing.
“Monmon, Roro. Let’s do our best today too.”
“That’s the worst! What is this, dog names?”
“Monmon has no style. Well, I don’t expect much from a bear man.”
Monet crossed her arms and glared at me. Her single eye was sharp and scary beneath her slanted cap.
“We should have picked fake names for you two earlier. Want to pick some now?”
“It’s too late now!”
“You’re sloppy. Now we have those dumb names and needless embarrassment.”
“John and George would’ve been good.”
Raul remained indifferent to the sisters as usual.
“Captain, you’ll eat cake with us, right? What will you have?”
“Anything’s fine. You’re on indoor duty, right? Go eat your cake in turns.”
When I said that to Monet and Roze, they must have heard my voice a little.
Meil looked this way and waved at Monet and Roze.
The sisters pretended not to notice and hid behind my shadow.
“It’s great to protect Shitoen close up… but that girl is gross!”
“Hey! Don’t say someone is gross when they’re the fiancé of a royal!”
“She seriously thinks everybody loves her. What a silly head.”
“Prince Saryu has good taste, though. That crown prince broke off with Shitoen and chose that woman, huh? Ugh, no way.”
“Alright, you two go back to your posts. Captain, to the conservatory.”
Raul ordered Monet and Roze swiftly, then pushed me toward Shitoen and the others.
“Oh, this is splendid.”
Crown Prince Arios said, and the Chancellor squinted and looked around.
The hexagonal conservatory had been for tropical plants but recently turned into a salon, with cloth-covered chairs and tables arranged to look like a café.
“Lovely! I want one like this at our new home!”
Meil immediately fussed excitedly. Glad she liked it.
The servers quickly prepared cake and drinks then left.
Meil sat close to Crown Prince Arios and immediately stabbed her cake with a fork.
After escorting Shitoen to sit, I glanced at the plate set before the Chancellor.
“Chancellor, if you don’t like sweets, I can get you some alcohol instead.”
His plate had just a few chocolates.
But the Chancellor lightly raised his hand to stop me.
“Not at all. I just can’t eat many sweets, but I actually like them.”
“After traveling, with busy events tomorrow too… aren’t you tired?”
He wasn’t that old, but thinness worried me, so I asked.
“Not as much as you, Prince Saryu, but when I was younger, I was into martial arts. I’ll gladly accept your kind words.”
The Chancellor bowed lightly, held the cup handle elegantly, and drank tea.
I matched his action, lifting my cup.
There was a small clink beside me as I drank, and I looked at Shitoen.
Her purple eyes sparkled as she held a fork, excitedly wondering where to start on the fig cake.
Cute…
I almost dribbled tea from the corner of my mouth.
Wait… this is strange.
Why does she look so cute just eating something like this?
What about other girls? I looked at Meil but felt nothing. She was a void. Even watching Meil eat cake left my heart calm.
Our Shitoen really is different. Exceptional.
“So today’s cake is fig.”
“Yes! Look at how shiny and glossy the surface is… It almost feels wrong to cut into it!”
Shitoen squeezed her eyes tightly as if savoring this, still undecided where to stab the fork.
Seeing this expression, I seriously considered having that owner live in my villa.
“Prince Saryu~!”
“What is it, Meil? I’m about to watch Shitoen eat cake. I can’t tell you to be quiet.”
“What? What is it?”
“Are you going to dance with Shitoen-sama at the ball tomorrow, Prince Saryu?”
Meil tilted her head while bringing sponge cake to her mouth.
“Well… of course.”
“You can dance!”
“Your lead really shows your character, Prince Saryu. You’re not pushy or selfish, always considerate of me… When we dance, my heart’s so full.”
Shitoen’s face grew redder as she talked, and at last, she looked down.
“I… just think I’m so happy.”
“Me too, me too, me too, me too! I think I’m the happiest in the world!”
I nodded vigorously, and Shitoen smiled at me brightly, cheeks flushed.
“I’m glad it’s not just me.”
I’m definitely the happier one ——————!
I struggled hard to hold back shouting with all my soul.
Drinking tea and eating cake, but this is official business.
This is a state event welcoming foreign guests, so if the kingdom’s prince suddenly shouted “I’m so happy!” it’d be a national issue. Tidros’s dignity would be questioned.
“Good for you, Shitoen-sama. A happy marriage indeed ♪”
Meil said that innocently.
Was she implying “You’re happy because I’m with Crown Prince Arios”?
I clenched my fist without thinking.
Has she never imagined how much that wounded Shitoen?
Or how Shitoen’s parents, friends… and the King of Tania suffer inside?
I almost spoke out, “How can you say that?” but stopped, hearing a deep sigh nearby.
The Chancellor.
Expressionless as always, but his eyes burned with dark anger.
“Meil, hey, aren’t you interested in my cake?”
Casually, Crown Prince Arios offered Meil a forkful of cake, and Meil opened her mouth with a cheerful “Ah~n ♡.”
I wanted to click my tongue and swallowed some tea with a grimace.
“Prince Saryu, shall we have some too? Chancellor, more tea?”
Sensing Shitoen’s concern, the Chancellor and I pretended nothing was wrong, sipping tea, eating cake, and chatting about trivial things.
An hour later, Raul said the carriages and security were ready.
Next, although we’d stay in the carriage, we’d guide the Luminous party to sightseeing spots.
Three carriages: the first was a decoy in front; the second carried me and Shitoen; the third was for the Luminous party.
Only our team, Crown Prince Arios, and the Chancellor knew this secret order.
Knights on horseback ran alongside the front, back, and sides for security.
“The carriages are ready, so let’s go soon.”
I stood and called out, and Meil responded energetically, “Yes!”
Shitoen went to Arios and Meil to act as hostess.
I thought about heading to the carriage first.
But then I turned, unwilling to leave the Chancellor alone, and our eyes met.
“Allow me to escort you to the carriage.”
“Much obliged.”
The Chancellor bowed deeply and began walking beside me.
“Not as much as your country, but the Tidros Kingdom also has places called scenic spots. Please enjoy them.”
“Though we’re here to thank you, you’ve done so many favors…”
I thought he meant Meil, but I couldn’t even respond.
“I was originally ordered to secure it by Crown Prince Leonias.”
“Is that so? Well… I’m glad to have made this visit.”
The Chancellor glanced briefly at Shitoen and the others following behind.
I thought he meant Crown Prince Arios.
Would he cry seeing her grown up or feeling happy?
“Seeing Princess Shitoen so happy and healthy was a relief. That’s thanks to Prince Saryu and the Tidros royal family’s care. It’s the first time we’ve seen such a side of her in Luminous.”
Suddenly mentioning Shitoen surprised me inside.
“Also, I heard your talents, which couldn’t bloom during your stay in Luminous, have flourished here. I’ve heard from the Tidros king you’ve exchanged info with court physicians.”
“Well… yes.”
“Moreover, your married life is harmonious.”
I didn’t know what to answer his suggestive words and faltered.
The Chancellor nodded emphatically as if satisfied.
“That’s wonderful. By the way… Prince Saryu, how is your health? Any discomfort?”
“Me?”
The Chancellor casually said something odd.
Honestly, I was confused.
When we visited Tania, King Tania asked Shitoen, “Any children yet?” so I thought he’d ask something like that, but it was totally different.
“For example, having strange dreams, or feeling strangely nostalgic for a stranger…”
The impact felt like a sudden cut.
I hadn’t told anyone… not even Shitoen.
Then why does the Chancellor know about that dream?
“…Who knows what you mean.”
He probably noticed my agitation, but he had no choice but to dodge.
I forced a laugh to cover it.
“I’m called the Winter Bear of Tidros, but I’m not one who never sleeps. I sleep so deeply at night that I don’t even dream.”
The Chancellor bowed deeply.
His sharp gaze seemed to leave a trail of light with every movement.
“I spoke presumptuously. Please disregard it.”
“No… thank you for your concern.”
I avoided the subject and hurried toward the entrance.
The Chancellor followed without any meaning attached, sometimes chatting casually.
“Captain. Preparations are ready, so let’s get to the carriage as scheduled.”
Stepping outside, Raul called to me.
Monet and Roze stood behind him.
“Are those two coming on horseback?”
I asked, thinking they’d ride with Shitoen and me in the carriage, but they had spurs on their boots and whips on their belts, so clearly riding.
“Hey hey, I want to be in the carriage with Shitoen-sama!”
Crown Prince Arios escorted Meil into the carriage, but suddenly Meil said this.
“Hm? Me…?”
Not just words—she’d already clung tightly to Shitoen.
“…Um, but if I ride with the Luminous guests, Prince Saryu would…”
Shitoen looked at me in confusion.
That meant I’d be alone in the carriage.
“Miss Meil, there’s security matters. Don’t be too selfish.”
The Chancellor interrupted, and I was relieved, but Meil lowered her brows, looking up at Shitoen. “But I want to talk to Shitoen-sama too. There are some things only women can talk about, right? In the carriage, others can’t hear, so I can talk about my worries…”
With that, the three of us men had no choice but to be silent.
“In that case, I will ride the first dummy carriage. The second carriage should have Princess Shitoen and Miss Meil, and the third carriage carry Crown Prince Arios and Prince Saryu, how about that?”
The Chancellor offered, but I hesitated.
They are guests after all, and it’s the Chancellor. The Chancellor should never sit alone without reception.
“Then I will ride alongside. How about Crown Prince Arios and the Chancellor riding in the carriage?”
“Please don’t fuss. I am old and a bit tired. If I could ride alone, it would be the best reception.”
He smiled, so I looked at Raul, unsure.
“Don’t say that, Chancellor. You are to serve even to my generation. I won’t let you say you’re tired of this. If Meil and Shitoen ride together, the Chancellor shall join me. Men must talk honestly anyways.”
“My, my. You want me to work until the prince’s reign. Such a harsh demand.”
Arios and the Chancellor joked, but…
They also seemed to be testing each other, making things confusing.
But I have no idea what the Chancellor thinks. Leaving him alone is dangerous.
At least Crown Prince Arios seems on our side; maybe it’s best to have him ride together.
Alright.
I whispered to Raul that I’d ride, then turned to Crown Prince Arios.
“Unplanned, but I’ll follow on horseback. First carriage, Arios and the Chancellor; second carriage, Shitoen and Meil; third carriage dummy…”
“The first carriage is too exalted. Your Highness, shall we be last?”
The Chancellor interjected. Arios raised an eyebrow as if about to say something troublesome.
“Fine! Arios and the Chancellor’s carriage will be last! The first carriage is the dummy!”
I ordered loudly to our team.
“Everyone, mount! Depart when ready!”
From now on, I’m pushing these receptions to my eldest brother!!
Seconds after the leading carriage’s wheels made a hard sound, the horses I rode clicked similarly.
The glaring sun was blocked, and the road was swallowed in thin shadows, like seeing through a translucent curtain.
Large houses stood side by side without gaps.
This was the holiday district Chaleze on the outskirts of the royal capital.
Nearby was a maintained royal park with dozens of resident birds. Migratory birds might be in the artificial ponds.
Normally, carriages aren’t allowed, but today we had the permit. Taking it slow, maybe wild animals would be visible—but they’d run from the wheels’ noise.
Even if seen, it’s troublesome. Meil might say “I want to get out and see!” The birds can freely fly away.
“Things seem on schedule.”
Raul, running alongside, called out loudly.
“You’re patrolling, right?”
I checked just in case.
Although Chaleze was a holiday district, about a third of the homes belonged to foreigners.
Residents included diplomats and wealthy merchants.
The royal family inspected purchases, but some resold to bad buyers, so it’s a district to watch.
“Local security patrols are active. The Luminous crown prince’s escort focuses here. But some houses have unknown owners, so be careful.”
I raised my face.
I wanted to check the sun’s position and clouds.
Suddenly, a tiny sharp light stabbed my eyes.
Turning toward it, I saw someone on the roof of a villa five houses away. No, something was set up.
“Duck! Shitoen, duck!!”
I cracked my whip and gripped the reins, urging my horse to a head-first gallop.
“Captain!?”
Raul’s voice followed. I leaned forward and raised my hips. The horse gained speed.
“Crossbow!”
By the time I shouted, I caught up with Shitoen’s carriage.
Through the window, I yelled, “Duck!”
Shitoen’s eyes widened, but she grabbed Meil’s arm opposite her and crouched.
“Captain!? What’s happening!?”
The carriage driver turned his mouth around to look.
I cracked my whip again, pushing the horse.
“Don’t stop! Go straight through! Jeez…”
The last “coming” was lost in a powerful destructive crash.
A high-pitched shriek, each different, like discordant screams.
The carriage’s window glass shattered; parts flew back.
“Shitoen, stay still!”
The window frames and handles were broken, but the carriage held. Wheels unharmed.
I wanted to check on Shitoen but stopping the carriage was impossible.
“Don’t stop the carriage! Speed up and get through!”
I ordered. The driver sat firmly, urged the horse with a long whip. The carriage gained speed.
Suddenly, a downpour-like sound rang behind.
Looking back sharply, arrows from a crossbow pierced the air just behind the carriage.
Damn. How many more are set?
“Crossbow, right!?”
“I saw a metal glint on the roof. Next shots prepped—bad news!”
As I told Raul who caught up, a scream rose behind.
Third shot. The third carriage.
Part of the carriage seemed damaged, but the driver tried to encourage the horse to run.
“Come on! Don’t slow down!”
I shouted and gave hand signals; the third carriage’s driver cracked the whip big and smooth.
Meanwhile, I remained alert and vigilant.
But no next attack came.
Crossbows require machinery to rewind, can’t be operated by hand.
That means each shot takes time and needs preparation.
Every shot hits. That’s the point of the crossbow.
To escape that, the only way is to leave fast.
“Raul, lead! Increase speed!”
“Understood!”
“Shitoen! Just respond!”
No unnecessary signals risking the enemy’s aim.
“I’m… ok! Miss Meil too!”
I heard voices from the carriage, meaning my message was received.
Looking closely, Shitoen and Meil huddled in the space opposite the seats.
No, Shitoen was covering Meil protectively.
I heard Meil’s frightened sobs.
“Stay still! We’re breaking through!”
“Understood!”
Though I worried about behind, turning my neck, Arios’s guards waited along the road, riding out to protect.
“Prince Saryu! I came on Raul’s orders!”
“What’s going on!? Are you okay?”
Monet and Roze, pretending to escort the dummy carriage, skillfully handled their horses from the front.
Raul’s orders were always precise and reliable.
“You, protect Shitoen’s carriage!”
I ordered instantly. No time to explain! More protectors are better now.
Wiping sweat from my brow, my reins were suddenly pulled hard.
I thought my horse was warned by Monet and Roze’s horses, but no.
My horse neighed a warning and tried to run away from the carriage in a diagonal direction.
While trying to signal with reins, a shadow dropped over me.
Looking up, masked figures like flying squirrels soared in the air.
One, two.
No, three!?
They ran down from the villa roofs and one clung onto the carriage roof.
The carriage rocked violently, running on one wheel. Shrieks came from inside but the other two clung to the driver’s seat, grounding the wheels.
“Ngh…!”
The driver screamed.
Damn, the carriage might be stopped!
“Leave this to us, Prince Saryu!”
Monet’s voice cut through the noise.
I caught sight of Monet and Roze circling horse heads on the driver’s seat.
“Yeah!”
I responded, holding the reins tightly, lifting one foot from the stirrup to press sideways toward the carriage.
Barely making it.
The man grabbed the top of the window frame, entered the carriage by flipping over.
The carriage rocked violently.
The wheel tilted sharply left and right, violently opening a door. The hardware fell off.
The door fell to the cobblestone road, bouncing and rolling away with a thunderous sound.
Meil screamed.
Checking distance.
Checking speed.
Checking landing spot.
I let go of the reins, jumped off the horse using my foot as a pivot.
Right on target.
I tumbled into the carriage.
I also managed to surprise the man from behind—basically a body slam. Hitting his back stopped me.
The man fell forward toward Shitoen and company, but Shitoen shrieked and punched upward.
Her palm strike hit his jaw and the man collapsed back into the seat.
Good job, Shitoen! That’s why you learned self-defense with the knights!
“You flying squirrel bastard. Making me work hard.”
I grabbed the back of his neck and lifted him.
The man was masked so I couldn’t see his face, but he shook and slashed his right hand.
I dodged just in time. Damn, a knife.
“Don’t you usually use a mace?”
I asked, but he lunged silently. I dodged right lightly and he jumped off the carriage.
“He escaped!”
That was Roze’s voice, not mine.
Peeking around the door frame, I saw the man roll, shrug off damage, and start running with two men who must have gotten off the driver’s seat.
“Pursue! Don’t let them escape!”
I shouted and several knights chased after them.
The carriage accelerated and we changed plans to return to the palace.
That night.
“Shitoen, are you okay!”
After reporting everywhere and finishing the knights’ meeting, I rushed to the bedroom where she was having her hair brushed by Eton.
Damn, I forgot to knock, I thought seeing Eton’s expression.
“Prince Saryu, you’re so busy… Are you alright?”
Shitoen lowered her brows apologetically. I shook my head vigorously.
“Forget about me. I’m sorry to have scared you.”
Though it was only an attempt, Shitoen had faced danger.
I had been busy handling Meil, who was in a panic.
But Shitoen must have been truly scared too, probably wanting to scream.
“Thank you, Eton. Sorry for keeping you busy today. Now that Prince Saryu is back, you can rest too.”
Eton seemed reluctant to leave as she held the brush and looked at Shitoen, but then suddenly turned to me.
“Milady is very tired. She was tense and probably anxious.”
“Of course.”
Agreeing seriously, Eton handed me the brush she held with a solemn face.
“…What’s this?”
“When I brush her hair, it relaxes her a lot.”
“Eton!?”
Shitoen was wide-eyed, surprised by what Eton said, but Eton glanced seriously at the brush.
“Since serving Milady, this has always been my task… but… tonight, I will leave it to Prince Saryu.”
“Eton, you! You’re giving me such an important role…!”
“What are you saying, Eton! P-Please don’t do that, Prince Saryu!”
Shitoen, sitting, stood anxiously, but Eton entrusted me with the brush regardless.
“This is all I can do. The rest is up to you, Prince Saryu!”
“I accept your will, loud and clear!”
“Um, excuse me…!”
“S-Shitoen. Sit down, sit down.”
I sat Shitoen back down in the chair, her face still flushed red, and stood behind her.
Looking again, Shitoen was really small.
She was originally shorter than my shoulder even standing, and even smaller sitting.
No good. Even if I bend, I won’t reach the tips, so I brought a nearby chair and sat right behind Shitoen.
Alright, ready.
“Start brushing from the ends, slow and gentle. When you’re done, loosely braid it. Now then.”
“B-Braid!?”
However, before I could ask how to do it, Eton had already left the room.
I realized I had made a mistake… I thought I could somehow manage the brushing myself.
Because it’s necessary when taking care of the horses.
But, a braid… braid, huh. Well, I’ll try doing it while asking Shitoen and see how it goes.
“If it hurts, just tell me, okay?”
While saying that, I briefly touched Shitoen’s hair.
I was going to start brushing from the tips as Eton said, but…
Whoa… so silky…
Even before I inserted the brush, it was already smooth and silky!
When I caught it in my hand, it slipped and fell with a slick sound.
Soft, thin, yet supple.
And… oh no. It smells wonderful… my head feels dizzy.
“Um… Are you really okay? Prince Saryu.”
Shitoen glanced back slightly while speaking, making me hastily straighten up.
No, no. What am I doing relaxing like this!
“It’s alright, it’s alright. Turn your face forward, Shitoen.”
I sat upright again, trying to be as relaxed as possible, and continued brushing.
I finished the tips quickly, then cleaned around her neck, and slowly brought the brush from the top of her head to her tips, making it as gentle as I could.
Strangely, I could feel Shitoen’s mood gradually relaxing.
“Does it hurt?”
I asked, and she nodded softly.
I kept my mouth shut and just moved the brush.
Her silver hair shimmered with the glow of the indoor oil lamps, seeming to emit a faint radiance.
As I was moving the brush, I was surprised when her body suddenly tilted left.
Supporting her with my free hand, she trembled.
“S-sorry… I’m feeling sleepy…”
She turned back and said that.
Her pink face was adorable, and if she relaxed like that, I’d be happier than anything.
“Then I’ll make a braid, so let’s sleep after I finish.”
“I’ll just loosely tie it. It’s fine.”
“Wait! If you tell me how, I’ll do it!”
I lightly pressed her shoulders as she tried to stand and sat her down. For now, I put the brush on a nearby table.
“Um… then, if you don’t mind, first divide my hair into three sections.”
Shitoen looked puzzled but said that.
I nodded “hmm hmm” and divided her silvery hair into three parts… but. This will all become one shortly anyway…?
“Hold the right section with your right hand, and the left section with your left hand.”
“Got it.”
“Make the right section the top right and the middle one.”
“Uh… yeah.”
“Then, make the left section the top on the middle section.”
“Y-yeah.”
“And repeat those steps alternately.”
“Do this alternating…”
As I switch the sections from one side to the other…
Since Shitoen’s hair is shiny and silky, it comes apart easily and melts back into a single strand…
What?! Is this some kind of magic trick?!

Do it again…
Make the right section that way, then the left… Stop right there!
Frantically trying to redo it several times, I hear a muffled chuckle.
“Sorry! Just a little more, wait a bit!”
“No, it’s okay. Um…”
With a little shake of her hair, Shitoen stood up.
She looked at me hesitantly, slightly spreading her hands.
“…Not just my hair. Can you also hold me tight?”
“Of course!”
She suddenly stood up and overwhelmed me with a vigorous hug.
When she pressed her face tightly to my chest, she remained still like that for a moment.
But the hand she put around my back seemed more clingy than a hug.
I felt sorry, thinking she must be really scared.
I gently kissed her neck, applying just enough pressure for her not to feel suffocated.
“Thank you for saving me today.”
“It’s me… Sorry I couldn’t protect you immediately.”
“That’s not true. Prince Saryu came right away.”
Shitoen lifted her face and smiled.
“You looked so cool. Very dependable.”
“Then… I’m glad… I’m really sorry.”
When I wrapped her in a hug again, she pressed her face against my chest and shook slightly.
She stayed still for a while, then suddenly asked me.
“Ah… Who was it…?”
“I caught only one, but he immediately committed suicide, so I don’t know the details. But Crown Prince Arios said, ‘He was probably aiming for Meil.’”
Certainly, the carriage Meil was on was targeted.
But initially, I and Shitoen were supposed to be on the second carriage.
They might have intended to target her too…
‘The third carriage was also targeted? Then it could really be Meil.’
That’s what my elder brother said.
Certainly, the third carriage was attacked, and Meil was supposed to be on it.
It might have been a plan to delay the second carriage and then hit the third, unable to stop suddenly.
“Either way, information leaked.”
Because the dummy carriage wasn’t targeted at all.
Then maybe it’s the Chancellor… That man initially tried to board the dummy alone.
“What’s wrong?”
My muttering was too soft for Shitoen to hear.
She tilted her head curiously, so I shook my head and said, “Nothing.”
Then I picked her up and held her sideways.
“Hyaa!”
“Well then, it’s bedtime. Young lady.”
I leaned in and told her, and Shitoen blushed, clutching my shirt tightly.
“Um… I’m not really sleepy anymore…”
She shyly whispered that.
“Can you hold me until I fall asleep?”
“Of course!!!!!!”
Gently lying her down on the bed, I hovered over her and peeked at her.
Her purple quartz-like eyes glittered, and her breathing was so sexy I gulped.
“Is just holding you enough?”
“… Prince Saryu, you’re mean.”
Maybe because I said that teasingly, she looked a little sulky, but it was adorable.
“If you say you’re sleepy again, I won’t let you sleep.”
“That’s the same for Prince Saryu too.”
Her graceful arm curled around my neck, pulling me closer.
We kissed again, as if drawn to each other.
She let out a sweet breath, and the fragrance was intoxicating.
My reason wavered and broke down.
I loosened my lips gently, caught up in her.
She murmured “Nn” softly, her breath rich and inviting.
As our lips met, she moaned as if in breathless desire. That was the moment I strongly embraced her.
Sliding my arm around her slender waist, I was about to be overwhelmed, but I hesitated, loosening my grip. I felt pathetic for being so clumsy.
“S-sorry…”
I looked at her, concerned, and she smiled with her eyes moist.
“You’re going to hold me forever, right?”
When she tilted her head as if inviting another kiss, I kissed her again.
I embraced her partially and kissed her all over her body.
Her white throat, collarbone, soft, warm chest, and smooth skin like porcelain.
With every kiss, she melted into a voice, whispering, and her breathing grew more lustrous as I slid my fingers across her skin.
At the moment of deep connection, she clung to my back with her hands and let out a love song, both adorable and painfully sweet.
We continued to hold each other like that, not just until she fell asleep but even afterward.
Maybe I should keep kissing her body until she sleeps.
We slept together.
◇◆◇◆
That night, I dreamed again.
A man was running.
That man.
The man dressed in navy.
He desperately ran down the stairs, crossing several doors that opened on their own.
As he approached the room I was aiming for, my heartbeat also skipped.
My throat burned as if I were running myself, and my head throbbed painfully.
Standing in front of the man who stopped, there’s a metal door.
It’s partially glazed at the top, with a signboard glowing red with some characters.
The man charged at it, but the door wouldn’t open by itself this time.
Frustrated, he clicked his tongue and hit the door…
For the first time, the man’s face became clear.
It was reflected on the polished, dull metal door.
It looked just like me.
I was stunned speechless.
While dazed, the man held up a card hanging around his neck, about to open the door, tugging at its handle.
Men dressed in a uniform similar to mine rushed over with crowbars.
The door beside the number panel was pressed, and the door opened with a loud noise.
“ !”
The uniformed men tried to stop him, but he rushed inside.
“ !!”
“ ! !”
Inside, angry shouts echoed.
On a metal-like bed, a woman covered in blood lay, with a man wielding a knife nearby.
Women in white uniforms cried, hugging each other against the wall.
But only one.
That… Shitoen, I think. The black-haired woman was confronting the knife-wielding man, shouting at each other.
The man said something to her. But the knife man, in a rage, shouted back.
“ !”
The knife rose high…
Instantly, I closed my eyes.
An intense pain shot through my chest, and I screamed.
It wasn’t because it hurt.
It was fear.
Shitoen was gone. She might get killed…
That despair burst from my throat…!
◇◆◇◆
“Prince Saryu!!”
I woke up startled; someone was shaking me.
My breathing was ragged as if I’d run all out.
Clutching the sheets, sweat soaked through me, yet I was still screaming after waking.
“Ha… ha…”
“…Prince Saryu. Are you really…”
Laid on my back, I stared at her in wonder, unable to sit up.
Shitoen’s lips, tightly pursed, slightly trembled as she looked into my face…
Tears spilled from her purple eyes and fell onto my cheek.
“…It’s okay…”
I awkwardly smiled and wiped her tears.
“Are you alright, Little Lord?”
An energetic knock sounded.
Then the voice of the head butler came from beyond the door, and I smirked. I probably shouted pretty loudly.
“Sorry, I was half-asleep. I’m fine.”
Even as I replied that, I was thinking about something else.
The man who appeared in my dream.
Isn’t he the man Shitoen loved in her previous life?
The dream I saw. The scenery.
Was that… a different world where she lived before reincarnation?
As I pressed my hand to Shitoen’s cheek, she pressed close.
“You surprised me.”
She smiled, and she was still a little worried, but her face revealed her anxiety.
Looking at her that way, I thought.
I glimpsed her past life.
It’s possible to see it quite vividly.
Could that be… the reason she’s being targeted?
