Chapter 82
Episode 82: The Battle with the Svel Sect
A thunderous boom shook the air.
It was the sound of a section of the Kingdom of Reshfeldâs forces being blown apart.
Theyâd walked right into one of our magical traps without noticing a thing.
A wave of scorching wind hit a moment later.
âSir Aldia! What was that just now!?â
No need to panic.
It was just one of our planted magical devices going off. Most of the soldiers probably hadnât expected the blast radius to reach this far, but I knew exactly what kind of effect it would have.
âYeah⊠thatâd be one of the magic traps we laid.â
âThat kind of power… I didnât expect that.â
âWe poured all of the Empireâs tech into this. Pulling off a blast like that? Itâs child’s play.â
Iâd packed the surrounding area with bags full of powdered materialsâextremely flammable stuff. When fire hit even one of them, the powder would scatter and trigger a secondary explosion.
Even if we didnât have enough traps, just one properly arranged detonation was enough to cause devastating chaos.
âThat blast probably tipped off the Svel Sect that weâve rigged the entire region with traps. Brace yourselvesâweâre going to be meeting them head-on!â
It was the signal for the battle to begin.
From here on, both armies would clash in the heart of the Dirust Plains.
âWe’re working with limited numbers. If the Svel Sect figures that out, theyâll launch a full-force assault. So no matter what, do not let them see us!â
Thereâs nothing more dangerous than the unknownâwhether it’s numbers or strength.
As long as the enemy doesnât know how many we are or what weâre capable of, theyâll hesitate to charge in.
Theyâll probe first. Try to gather intel.
âIf they send scouts, take them out immediately. Do notâdo notâlet them report back!â
âYes, sir!â
The Svel Sect will regret ever setting foot on this land.
If you stand before Princess Valtlune, then I donât care what kingdom or religion you belong to.
âEveryone, I expect nothing but your best. Go!â
The newly assembled elite force began moving out.
I suppose that means itâs my turn to step forward too.
—
â â â
Thereâs no one beside me.
I move aloneâparting grass and undergrowth as I advance.
My destination is a battlefield drenched in death.
But itâs not my death Iâm heading toward. Itâs theirs.
âWhat was that explosion!?â
âDidnât hear anything about this! Was it the Empire!?â
âBut the Empire didnât have enough time to set up defenses, did they?â
…Tch. Noisy bastards.
Long preparation or shortâmakes no difference.
The outcomeâs already decided. Iâm going to kill every last one of you.
Worrying about the larger army? Thatâs noble and all, butâ
âWait, did you hear that? Somethingâsâghk!â
âHey, whatâs wrongâGAAAH!â
…You really should be more aware of your surroundings.
The feeling of a blade slicing through bone is the most distinct of all.
The spray of blood that trails along the edge… is undeniable proof of a life taken.
âYouâyouâre with the Empire!â
âYeah. Iâm with the Imperial Army.â
âWhat are you doing here all by yourself!?â
What am I doing? What kind of stupid question is that?
I flick the blood off my blade with a swift motion, then level it at the rest of the Svel Sect soldiers.
âIâm here to kill you. What other reason would I have?â
Scouting? Don’t insult me.
I walked straight into enemy territoryâright into the heart of their formation.
And if Iâm here, then Iâll kill them all. No half-measures.
Thatâs just how I do things.
âYou idiot! Charging in aloneâwhat kind of pathetic military does the Empire runâAGH!â
The Svel Sectâs soldiers love to run their mouths.
If they used their hands instead of their tongues, they might live longer.
âYou sure talk a lot… Rodents these days love to squeal, huh?â
The man crumples to the ground.
With a wet splat, his corpse joins the dirt.
Before you insult your enemy, maybe make sure you can walk away from it.
He didnât. And so, he died.
âYou monster!!â
âKill him! Donât give him a chance to beg!â
Ah, now theyâre getting serious.
Theyâre pointing their swords and spears my way.
But whatâdid they think Iâd cry and beg for my life?
Did they think Iâd drop to my knees and plead, âPlease, spare meâ?
Which one of us is the real idiot here?
âTch… I donât beg for my life. That would be a disgrace to this fight.â
âLetâs fight to the death until one side is utterly destroyed!â
I take a step forward.
Just a stepâbut I know my face is twisting into a grin.
âAh…!â
âD-Donât flinch! Heâs alone! There are no reinforcements!â
âSurround him and attack at onceâhe canât handle all of us!â
Well, theyâre right about one thing.
There are no reinforcements.
My allies are way behind me, waiting to engage them later.
But assuming this area is safe… is a mistake theyâre going to pay for.
Click.
A soft metallic sound echoedâand then, from all around the Svel Sectâs formation, explosions roared.
âWhat theâ!?â
âI didnât mention it yet, did I?â
âââââ!â
âThis land belongs to the Empire. We donât show mercy to invaders.â
Of course, weâve set up magical devices on our side too.
Unlike the ones near the Reshfeld army, these are all triggered manually.
All I have to do is pull the triggerâand they die to a threat they canât even see.
âKill me, and maybe the explosions will stop.â
Click.
âSo? Whatâs it gonna be?â
The blasts keep roaring. Screams echo all across the field.
A massacre.
But all weâre doing is respondingâcalmly, efficientlyâto a foreign threat.
We havenât done anything wrong. Wouldnât you agree?
After all…
You were the ones who came to threaten our land first.
